A/N: This is my first attempt at a Kingdom Hearts fanfic, so don't be mean if it's not good. Also, updates might be really slow at times, since the author is extremely lazy and would rather play the game than write about it.
Disclaimer: The author does not own Kingdom Hearts, Square Enix, Buena Vista, Final Fantasy or anything else associated with the game. If at times he thinks he does, it means he's gone temporarily insane.
"Jolene! Are you awake?"
"No," came the muffled reply.
"Breakfast is ready, so hurry down." Inside her room, Jolene pulled the covers over her head and tried to go back to sleep. However, the smell of her mother's bacon had wafted up the stairs. Dammit, why does she have to make such good bacon? Giving up on going to sleep, she crawled out of bed and picked out an outfit for the day.
She decided on a pair of black jeans and a white tank top. The left leg of the jeans almost covered her foot and had a silver dragon spiraling down it, while the right leg stopped just above her ankle. After she was satisfied with her clothes, she started to brush her auburn hair. It was about shoulder length, and wavy. Satisfied, she headed down the stairs to eat.
"Morning, sweetheart," her mother called from the kitchen as she passed.
"Morning, Mom," she said, hurrying to get some bacon before it was gone. Her father was sitting at the table, reading the newspaper and drinking coffee. "Morning, Dad."
"Morning," he absently replied, busy studying the sports section. Jolene rolled her eyes and poured herself a glass of milk.
"Now Jolene, you hurry up and get ready. You don't want to be late to class again," her mother warned, sitting down at the table.
"Don't worry, I'll get there on time," she said absently, shoveling food into her mouth.
Twenty minutes later, she started walking to school. Even though she was barely a mile away, there wasn't a bus that passed her house. As a result, she had to leave about twenty minutes early to arrive on time. Usually, she didn't mind. Today, though, it looked like it was going to rain. Dark clouds blanketed the city, even lower than usual. Usually the sunrise would have lit the streets by now, but the clouds had blocked out all light, and the city was as dark as nighttime.
Hoping to get to school before it started to rain, she began to cut through an alley. She rarely used this shortcut, but today it seemed like a necessity. Almost as soon as she entered, however, she wished she hadn't. She was standing face to face with some… creature. Its body was jet black, with no features save for its glowing yellow eyes. Jolene noticed movement behind it, and was horrified to see even more of the things emerging from the shadows. For a moment, neither side moved. But then, the creatures began to advance. A scream escaping her lips, she turned and fled from the alley. In the open, she was horrified by what she saw.
More of the creatures were appearing, emerging from alleyways, under cars, any place there was a shadow. They fell on everyone, who would soon turn into more of the creatures. Jolene turned to her alleyway to see an alarming amount of the creatures flooding from it. They began to advance on her, rapidly. She looked around frantically, searching for a way out, but everywhere she looked was one of the strange beings.
Suddenly, however, the things stopped. In fact, everything stopped. One of the creatures had halted in midair as it leapt for her, and even a bolt of lightning was frozen in the sky. Then, Jolene heard a voice.
Use the Keyblade.
"What? Who's there?" she asked frantically, green eyes flashing with fear. Instead of a response, a bolt of darkness shot from her hand. She cried out, thinking she was being turned into one of the creatures. Instead, the darkness formed into a blade. A blade… in the shape of a key. Once it formed, Jolene gasped. It was… beautiful. She held a black handle, with two black wings sprouting from the top and meeting at the bottom. A long, slender blade, the deepest ebony, extended from the handle, intricate silver designs etched along its length. At the top, graceful, curving teeth sprouted to one side, completing the key. A keychain hung from the hilt, with a charm in the shape of a scythe at the end. Again, the voice spoke.
Use the Keyblade… but be careful not to lose yourself to the darkness. The voice came again. Before she could wonder what it had meant, time resumed from its temporary stop. Without thinking, she lashed out with her weapon, connecting with the creature that had leapt at her. It vanished in a cloud of smoke.
Suddenly, the things seemed wary of her, as if they realized she was a threat. Deciding not to wait for them to attack again, she lunged forward, swinging the Keyblade in a wide arc that destroyed three of the creatures. They then resumed their attack, falling on her mercilessly. Jolene fought desperately, but there was no way she could defeat all of them.
A sudden rumbling filled the air, causing both the creatures and Jolene to stop. A massive dark portal had appeared, and was tearing off chunks of the world. The voice spoke up again.
Unfortunately, you cannot save your world. It said, angering Jolene.
"But it's my home! Can't you do anything to save it?" she cried. Sorry… no. "But you have to! You can't just let these things destroy it!" Sorry, there's nothing I can do. And you need to leave this world. "No! I'm not going to abandon it." I can see you're going to be stubborn. Well then, I'm sorry. Without warning, a portal opened under her feet and she fell through. As she fell through, she thought she saw a figure emerge from the dark portal in front of her. However, she soon lost consciousness as the darkness engulfed her.
A/N: Dun dun dunnnnnnn! Where was Jolene taken? Why did the Heartless attack her world? What was the thing in the portal? Why am I asking these questions when I already know the answers? Find out in the next installment of… Key to Destruction! Sorry if it was too short, but it's just the prologue. Review and I'll make the next chapter longer. If you don't, I get closer to adding Pence to the story! Muahahahaha!
