Five Months Left

Carlton watched Juliet as she slipped her jacket off and looked at her pregnant belly. She was starting to show now, and it was getting harder and harder to hide it. Carlton personally thought she looked beautiful—radiant would have been a good word to describe her—but Juliet was nervous about them being found out. She had broke down when Carlton mentioned it, telling him over and over again that she only wanted to work with him. He had been powerless to stop the tears that time, all he could say is that he would never leave her. He just hoped that they weren’t forced apart. He was worried about Juliet being out in the field with their child.

“Don’t worry about it, Jules. I think you look beautiful, and should only worry about what to name the babies,” Carlton said. Juliet looked up at him and grinned then sat down at her desk.

When she sat down her baby bump became even more noticeable, but Carlton said nothing. He simply sat down at his desk and then began to go through the papers that had piled up on it. He glanced over at Juliet occasionally, worried that she was still fretting about them being separated.

It came as no surprise when they were called into the Chief’s office shortly after lunch. Juliet followed Carlton in careful not to look too guilty. They hadn’t really done anything wrong, they had just done what humans were supposed to do.

“Detectives, I think that we need to talk. And I recommend that you two start by telling me when you planned on telling me?” she asked them. Carlton looked at Juliet who glanced at her hands folded in her hands then shrugged.

“Carlton knew that you’d figure it out eventually and we just…we didn’t want to separated,” Juliet said. She looked at Chief Vick with pleading eyes. Carlton wanted to reach out and take her hand, he wanted to run his fingers through her hair and soothe her, but he couldn’t.

After a long pause the Chief finally spoke again. “When are you due?”

“Five months,” Carlton said. Her eyes flickered between the two detectives and she smiled then folded her hands on her desk. She did not look angry, she looked pleased.

“Have you picked a name out yet?” she asked them. Carlton looked at Juliet who smiled and then sat up a little straighter. Carlton was relieved that the Chief had skipped the lecture, at least for the time being.

“Well, since we’re having twins we were thinking of Julius and Carly if we have a boy and a girl, or Monica and Lindsay if we have two girls, and Elijah and Ryley if we have two boys” Juliet said. She seemed extremely happy to be talking about their future children. Given the alternative conversation Carlton too was fairly pleased.

“You can remain partners as long as this doesn’t affect your working habits. Besides, Juliet will be stuck behind a desk soon,” she threw in. Juliet frowned momentarily but it quickly turned back to a radiant smile. Carlton smiled as well, but not because of what the chief had said (although he was grateful he would get to work will Juliet longer) he was smiling because Juliet was smiling. Her smile was entrancing and he found himself unable to look away from her.

Five and a Half Months Left

“So, twins?” Shawn asked them as he pulled up a chair and sat looking at the two detectives. Juliet grinned and nodded, Carlton simply glared at him.

“Yes, Spencer. Where’d you hear that?” Carlton asked him trying to remain bitter with the man. He only acted like this out of habit, really he had grown to like Shawn. He had managed to keep their secrets from everyone, something Carlton thought to be impossible.

“The spirits of course. But news travels fast around here,” Shawn answered waving his hand around indicating the precinct. Carlton tried to remain angry but he couldn’t. He relaxed and then looked over at Juliet. It seemed her baby bump was growing bigger everyday, but he thought that maybe it was all in his head.

“Why are you really here?” Juliet asked him. Shawn looked at her innocently then looked at Lassiter and shrugged.

“The spirits were just wondering if you were planning on having a baby shower?” Shawn asked them. Juliet laughed and Carlton soon joined in. He always tried to act like he didn’t like Shawn—and for the most part he didn’t—but on occasion he broke down.

“Eventually,” Juliet said. Her answer pleased him and he soon was walking away from them.

Four Months Left

Now there was not one person that they came in contact with (that they worked with) that didn’t already know the news. Carlton was about ready to tear off the head of the next guy who was daring enough to ask them about it, but Juliet somehow managed to stop him.

Juliet was sitting on the couch wearing one of his sweaters and a pair of sweat pants when Carlton came into the room. There was a carton of cookie dough ice cream, her latest craving, sitting in her lap. She grinned at him and then stood up to kiss him. Carlton loved these moments. Moments that seemed like they had been stolen from some hallmark movie. He wanted them to never go away. He knew that eventually things would change. When the babies came their relationship would be strained and things would change drastically. But he hoped that could work through that.
