A short ficlet
She sits stiffly in the funeral hall, listening to Sanada san praise him. Her captain, her friend, her brother. Today is a frosty Sunday, outside snowflakes are falling, delicately dropping onto the street.
the other Rikkaidai regulars are there too, as are Hyoutei and Seigaku. Everyone is sad to see one of their best players, a player even better than Seigaku’s Tezuka san, die. It was a huge risk to take- the surgery was supposed to be quick and easy. However, everyone overlooked the fact that there wasn’t a very big chance of survival. Now- the results have been shown.
Friends and family are at the funeral as well. She had chosen to sit with the Rikkaidai team, her family had okayed it and now she gazes at the photo of her brother, the brother who taught her nearly everything she knows about tennis- his feminine features and soft slightly wavy blue hair. She brushes her own yellow blonde hair out of her icey pale blue eyes. Her snowy white complexion matches her brother’s.
Now people are getting out of their seats, walking around the coffin. It’s nearly burial time- the graveyard is just outside the funeral hall. She stands up and looks at her brother’s face for the last time- she’s so miserable but the tears just won’t come. Yet.
Now she feels hysterical, she feels like giggling, laughing until she collapses, laughing randomly, hysterically, but she squashes the feeling.
They’re leaving the hall now to go to the graveyard outside. She feels a sudden chill and realizes that all she’s wearing is a lacy lace-up black shirt, a black halter underneath, a black miniskirt and a pair of knee length black boots.
Her breath is puffing out in white mist from her cherry red mouth. She watches the delicate looking snow fall softly to the ground and thinks about how the snow is just like her brother- delicate looking but actually very strong.
After the burial is over, and everyone has gone, she goes to his gravestone and kneels in front of it despite the cold and the fact that she doesn’t have anything to protect her knees from it.
She speaks, her voice cracking, “Onii-chan” she murmurs softly, “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry that the surgery didn’t turn out well. I miss you already. I wish you could stay with me, I wish it was possible to us to be together again.” And finally, the tears fall, but they freeze in midair and fall to the ground just like the snowflakes.
The cold had reached it’s limit, SHE had reached her limit too. She falls on top of her dear brother’s grave, not breathing anymore.
The next day, the same people attend another funeral. She’s buried next to the grave which reads ‘Yukimura Seiichi’. A new gravestone joins the rest, much like her frozen tears joining the snow and the ice. Finally, she and her brother are together at last. Rest In Peace.
Thank you everyone
