The Novelist
Chapter One
Casey MacDonald never felt spectacular. She wasn’t ever the homecoming queen, and she never dated the star football player in high school. In fact, she had always thought of herself as inexplicably plain, and I don’t mean the “plain but not really” sort of deal, no Casey MacDonald suffered from something far worse, the sort of plainness that seeps through your bones, and manifests within your soul, stripping you off all confidence and self esteem. Something dark, with an unstoppable power that very well could damage you forever.
As it is, if you were to ask her what she would rate herself as on a scale of one to ten, Casey would mumble a “Zero” without a second thought. To her, she’s a perfect nothing, worthless, and complected. In fact, she would probably go all glassy eyed and start mumbling about the only time in her pitiful existence when she truly felt needed, felt loved. The brief period in which
she had claimed Derek Venturi, her beautiful step brother, as her own.
He had been her everything, the very sustenance on which she survived. But that was then. She should be over him by now right? Wrong. That’s what bothers her most of all. She hates that even now, almost four years since she’d seen him last, the mere memory of his kiss nearly sends her into spasm’s of delight. She hates that she still loves him with every particle of her being. It infuriates her to know that if, he was to walk back into her life today, she would fall back into his arms just like the last four years had never happened. As if they didn’t have a beautiful daughter together, that he never bothered to meet. Just exactly like if he had come running after her the day she left.
Casey doesn’t fully blame Derek of what happened between them though, after all, she left before he even knew about her pregnancy. But it was his future that prompted her to leave in the first place. On most days, Casey feels guilty for letting herself be angry at all, because most days, she can see the huge weight of things she’d been blessed with. Her Daughter, Arabella Shay, was a happy and healthy three and a half year old. She had established herself as a world renowned Novelist, a career she had once only dreamed of. She’d even been able to land her latest book, A Forbidden Love, on the New York Times Bestseller’s list.
Today was not one of those days however. She had a massive headache, a deadline to meet, two interviews she needed desperately to prepare for, and a three year old on her hands who loved to play twenty-one questions. Her “boyfriend” was on a date with the man of his dreams, leaving her alone with her memories, with her anger, a collaboration of bad emotions in which she wanted no part of. Today she felt every second as old as her twenty two years.
Today she hated the world, and today she wanted revenge.
