AN:THIS STORY'S BEEN STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR AWILE NOW SO I THOUGHT I'D GIVE IT A TRY. PLZ R/R AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK.
STEVE POV
I was on my way home from work at the DX a year after Dally and Johnny died. A lot's happen sence then. Soda's finally got over Sandy, Darry only has to work one job and has three days off, Pony's finally got a girl friend, and Two-bit cut down on drinking...a little.
It's been awile sence Evie and me broke up. Eight months to be exact. She caught me cheeting on her with Syvia (dally's exgirl can't figure out how to spell it) and ended it. I was walking home when I saw something in a carseat with a letter sticking out of it on my door step. As I got closer I saw it was a baby wrapped in a pink blanket. I stood there shocked as I read the letter.
Dear Steve,
Eight months ago I was on my way to the DX to tell you some news that would change your life forever when I saw you and your little slut. I was pregnant and was gonna keep the baby, but when my parents found out they hit the roof. They told me to put her up for adoption and I would have, had I not have a soft spot for our daughter. When I first held her, I knew I couldn't keep her, and that pain was unbarrable. I know she'll be better off with her father than with her drunk mother. Yes, she is yours. You can get a blood test if you want. She was born at 3:25am. at Tulsa Medical, August 8, and weighed 5 pounds, 11 ounces. I didn't name her, so that choose is yours. If you decide you don't want her here's the number to the social services, 555-5555-555 (duh not real). I wish you would keep her, but I know I can't make you. You don't have to worry about me either. By the time you've gotton this, I'll be on my way to Dallas TX, to live with my cousin. My parents don't know I left our daughter with you. Probably for the best. Please give our daughter the life I couldn't have given.
Evie.
I stood there shocked for about ten minutes, rereading the letter ten times. I looked down in the carseat at my sleeping daughter. There was no dout she was mine. She had my hair color, my nose, my ears, everything. When she opened her eyes though, I saw she had her mother's eyes. Beautiful dark blue eyes that make it seem that your looking at the ocean.
I picked her up and held her close to me, taking in the smell of my four day old baby. I knew I had to get her to the Curtis', My dad would be home soon and would probably kill her and me if he saw her. I placed her back into the carseat and fasoned it in the back seat of the car and drove to the Curtis'.
I got there and grabbed the baby in the car seat, carring her in the house. Darry was reading the newspaper, Soda and Two-bit were playing poker, and Ponyboy was reading a book. As soon as I walked in and everyone saw me holding a little baby, everything went quiet.
"Is that yours?" My best buddy asked as I sat on the couch by Pony. Pony looked up from his book to see why it was so quiet, and looked at me with wide eyes.
"According to Evie it is." I said as I handed Soda the note. He read it then passed it on to Darry.
"What are you gonna do?" Darry asked.
"I'm gonna keep her. I'm not gonna have some stranger raising my kid." I said as I looked down at her. Her mother had already abandon her, why should her father?
"One problem," I say."I gotta figure a way to hide her from my dad."
"You could move in here." Darry said as he looked over at the infant. "You could take my old room and she could take Soda's old room."
"Yeah!" Soda yelled excitedly.
"I don't know. Y'all sure ya don't mind?" I asked, unsure.
"Not at all. Pony, go with Two-bit and find the old crib and baby stuff out the attic will ya?" Darry said as Sodapop continued to jump up and down with excitment.
"Come on, ya lazy bum." Pony said as he yanked Two-bit up.
"Can I hold her?" Soda asked as he calmed down and sat next to me.
"Sure." I say as I hand her over to him.
"What's her name?" Soda asked as the baby wrapped a tiny hand around his fingure.
"I haven't decided yet." I said thoughfully. "I'm thinking about Lilly."
"That's a great name for her." Soda said and a twenty minutes later, Pony and Two-bit are back with a crib in a bow and two big bags of baby stuff.
After we put the crib back together, I put Lilly into a pair of blue shorts with a bear at the right leg and a matching white top. I would go shopping tomorrow for some girl clothes for Lilly.
At 9:30pm. Lilly was in her new crib and sound asleep, but I was awoken by her crys three hours later.
