Mythical Creature

There was a Muggle magazine left behind in the Ravenclaw common room, on Luna's second year in Hogwarts. The girls in the pictures stayed still, and the text rambled on about things she'd never heard of. She read it out of idle curiosity, but one page √ one page she devoured.

Afraid it might just be a Muggle thing, she started reading witch magazines, scouring for a sign of what she'd found. Nothing. Not a word. It was all about boys and charms and glamour spells, as if that was all that could fill a young witch's mind. Perhaps, when it came to her, it was just some carry-over from a Muggle ancestor. She had always been different. She tried not to think about it anymore.

She was warming up by the fireplace one night, the year following Dumbledore's death, chilled to the bone from the winter cold that permeated the stones of the "detention" dungeon. Lisa Turpin sat down next to her, fidgeting slightly, clutching a folded blanket to her chest. She'd not always been kind to Luna, but things were different now. 'Here,' said Lisa, and offered the blanket.

The following summer, when the sun chased away even the memory of chill, they walked together among the fresh graves around the lake, and Lisa pulled her behind Dumbledore's for a kiss as short and sweet as a puff of fresh wind. Her fear fell apart in pieces, and fluttered away.

She wasn't the last of her kind after all.
