A/N: Just something that popped into my head one night whicl watching old 'Leave it to Beaver' reruns because nothing else was on. Any who, People like to think that they know their neighbors. But in one quiet little suburb, one family has a secret that could change everything. Welcome to 1024 Fair View Drive. Home of the Smiths.
"Why hello there Bucky. How are you today?" the middle-aged housewife replied.
"I'm great Mrs. Johnson. And I wanted to know if Jill could come out and play today?" Bucky said as he leaned agains the white picket fence seperating their two properties.
Mrs. Johnson looked up from her gardening at the little boy. He was a little larger than the other children his age, but his parents had always said that was from his vegetables. Bucky's bright blue eyes glittered in the sunlight as he waited for an answer.
"I'm sorry, but she isn't here. She and her friends are up at the playground. You may go and play with them if you wish." she said as she adjusted her large sunhat. The wide ribbon around it swayed in the light summer breeze.
"Thank you Mrs. Johnson." Bucky said as he let go of the wooden fence and took off to the park.
Mrs. Johnson watched him go. Such a fast boy. So peculiar. Then again, she thought, his whole family was peculiar. His father was enormous and his mother was so secretive. She had an answer for any question that the other housewives asked her at any of the neighborhood get-togethers. But they were always little answers. No details. Oh yes, Bucky Smith and his family were odd and they had their secrets well hidden. But some secrets were made to be told. That was Miriam Johnson's philosophy at least.
It was a large park and was equiped with everything. Swingsets, monkey bars, tire tunnels, rocking animals, sand, and the largest jungle gym for fourty miles. Made to look like an something from a child's dream it was part castle, part rocket ship, and part pirate ship.
Bucky stopped as he reached the gates that allowed entrance to the playground. They were only closed at sunset and then opened again at around 7 AM. His blue eyes scanned the massive structure before in search of Jill Johnson. He finally spotted her in on a high tower on the castle part of the jungle gym. And she wasn't alone. Bruce Winston was with her and her friends.
Bruce Winston was the neighborhood bully. He enjoyed taking other children's lunch money at the bus stop every morning. Bucky avoided Bruce because he had always been told to avoid confrontation by his parents.
Bucky ran forward to the gym and began to scale one of the role walls in record speed.
"No." said a little girl with her light brown hair up in a high ponytail. Her friends were cowering behind her and had already given Bruce their juice.
"Now!" Brue yelled.
"No!" the girl replied.
"Leave hethem alone, bully!"
Bruce turned around and the girls looked past him to the sorce of the voice. A tall boy, but shorter than Bruce, stood by the rope wall with his little hands in fists.
"Or what?" Bruce said defiantly. The kid was an inch or so shorter than he and was therefore no threat.
"Or I'll make you." he said. He narrowed his eyes. He noticed his mom did that when ever dad said something wrong to her. It always seemed to scare him.
"Bucky!" the girl in the ponytail cried.
"I'll help you Jill" Bucky said, without taking his eyes off of Bruce.
"Be careful!" She said as her two friends clinged closer to her.
Bruce was done talking. He walkd over to Bucky as scarily as he could, hoping to intimadate him. But Bucky stood his ground.
When they stood only inches apart and face to face, Bruce looked down at him and said, "What did you say." It was more of a demand than a question.
Bucky could see the sand in Bruce's brown eyes through his greesy black hair. "Leave them alone or I'll make you." Bucky said through gritted teeth.
"Your gunna regret saying that." Bruce said as he stood straight up and proceeded to crack his knuckles in Bucky's face. The three girls behind him gasped at the sound.
Bruce was starting to rear back his arm when they heard,
"HEY!"
The children looked over to the park gates to see the large figure of a man, Bucky's dad. His dad was walking toward the gym glaring at the two young boys obviously getting ready to fight.
Bruce had put his arm down and started thinking up a good story.
"Mr. Smith, nice to see you sir. We were just playing around. Weren't we Bucky?" He shot a glare at Bucky that promiced violence if he didn't play along. Bucky remaind silent.
"I can see that Bruce." Bucky's father said in an unamuse tone. His hair was a dark blonde color and his eyes were crystal blue. Just like Bucky's. "In fact I think I should let your parents know exactly what kind of games you're playing. Now get home. All of you. Sun will set in a few minuets and your parents are all probably waiting."
"Yes sir." all the children, including Bucky, said.
They walked along the sidewalk and talked about their favorite flavors of ice cream. Bucky's father walked behind them and enjoyed their innocent conversation, laughing occasionally at something the children would say.
"I like vanilla." Bucky said.
"Vanilla? That's so plain. My favorite is Berry Ripple. Its got four different kinds of berrys in it and nuts and cherry syrup!" Jill said excitedly.
"I like plain." Bucky said calmly with his hands in his pockets.
"Well, I like different." she said back. "Like you."
"What?" Bucky asked as he gave her a questioning look.
"You're different. Back at the playground you weren't scared of Bruce at all. Sarah and Mary were though. But you were so brave." Jill said as she stopped bouncing around for a moment to speak to him.
Bucky blushed a little which made Jill giggle and bounce around once more.
"Yeah, well...you weren't scared either." he said back.
"Yeah." Jill said. "Well, it take a lot to scared me!" She said proudly.
"Here we are kids." Bucky's father said as they stopped in front of the Johnson home. "Say goodbye Bucky."
"Bye Jill." Bucky said and blushed again.
"Bye Bucky. See you tomarrow?"
"Yeah, tomarrow."
With that, Jill raced up to the front door and then waved to Bucky and his dad. They waved back and then she went inside.
Left alone, the two began to walk next door to their house. Bucky sniffed the air. He could already smell his mother cooking ribs. His favorite dinner dish. They walked in silence up to the porch. And then Bucky asked his father something.
"Dad?"
"Yes son?" His father answered as he prepared to turn the knob and open the door to their home.
"Why do I have to wear this costume all the time?" Bucky asked innocently.
His father looked down at him and then opened the door, beconing him inside. Bucky followed. Once inside, Bucky's father sat on a chair next to the door. He then picked up his ten year old son and set him on his knee.
"Son." he began. "You know what you look like without your disguise right?"
"Yeah." Bucky answered.
"Well, have you ever seen anyone else that looks like that?" he asked.
"You." he said.
"I mean besides me." dad asked again. Bucky shook his head from side to side. His father sighed.
"So, you and I are different from everyone else, even from your mother. And we have to wear these disguises to make thm think we look just like them all the time."
"But mommy see us without the costumes on, why can't anyone else?" Bucky asked as he tilted his head to the sid in confussion.
"Your mother is different." His dad replied.
"Different how?" Bucky asked again.
His father smiled warmly and chuckled. "You'll understand when you're older. Now go wash up for dinner."
"Okay dad." Bucky said as he hopped off his dad's knee and raced up the stairs to the bathroom.
Bucky's father remained seated for a few moments before standing slowly. He was about to head into the kitchen when he caught sight of his reflection in the hall mirror. He paused to examine himself. He touched his pale face and hair and looked into eyes blue as the sky. He took a deep sigh and lifted his left arm.
He moved his sleeve to reveal his watch. He gave it a few quick turns with his free hand and then pushed on it's glass surface. The watch made a light humming sound and then blue sparks began to crackle across his face. He watched as his Ooman disguise fadded to reveal his tue Yautja form.
He placed his hand once more on his face and enjoyed the feel of his own skin. He enjoyed being himself. And it had not shocked him that his son would want to experiance such a joy all the time, outside their home.
With another sigh he thought to himself silently as he walked into the kitchen to greet his Ooman wife:
'You'll understand when you're older Bakuub, when you're older.'
MMWWAAHHAHAHAH!! I mean...cough...please review!
