Chapter 6: THe Beginnings of Marriage

Breena looked up at Stephen as he paced back and forth in front of her, tugging at his hair, knowing that he couldn't force Breena to do something she didn't want to. What was worse was that the wedding party was waiting outside for them to consummate their marriage.

He looked at her and stopped pacing, throwing himself to his knees in front of her. She drew away from him but he kept looking up at her.

"What?" she asked angrily.

He didn't answer her and she looked away, crying.

"I wouldn't do anything to you that would hurt you but this is expected of us."

"Why?"

"To have children," he placed his hand on her knee.

"No," she swept his hand off of her.

"We cannot leave this room until-."

She stood up and nearly pushed him to the ground. She began to pull her hair in fear. It wasn't easy for her like it was for him... She was still a virgin.

Eilis stood outside the room with the rest of the wedding party as they went about their business and feasted. She, on the other hand, was praying for her friend and for herself, knowing that her own marriage was imminent and she would need strength also.

The next morning was an unusual and awkward one for Breena. She winced as she stood up out of bed, dressing herself and making her way to the door. Everyone had left but Eilis was still outside, sleeping against the wall. Breena patted her head and her friend woke up.

"Please tell me it didn't happen," Eilis stood up but she knew the answer would be yes. Unsurprisingly, Breena nodded and laughed at the same time.

"It wasn't as strange as I thought it would be," Breena rubbed her forehead and looked down.

"I'm still frightened," Eilis began to cry. Breena hugged her and began to cry with her.

The Bruce sat up when Breena and Stephen walked in. A sad smirk scratched across his face. Breena looked tired as she made her way to sit next to Eilis and The Bruce's wife. They looked at her and watched her play with her hands nervously.

"I don't see why we have to sit through this," Breena tried to turn their attentions away from her.

"It is our duty, Breena," The Bruce's wife spoke up, "You are a wife now, you must serve your husband, being by his side, bearing his children, and

pleasing him. You have much to learn."

Breena closed her eyes and dropped her head. She wanted a life of her own but she knew that was impossible now...
