Sunrise

By Anterastilis

Sunrise and the new day's breaking through

The morning of another day without you

He was a contradiction. A dark soul, but fair skin; hair so light it was nearly white; eyes of stormy silver. He threw off his family. He did what no one thought he would do. He betrayed everything he had been taught about bloodlines and social class. He forsook his name. And he did it proudly. His eyes shining with a dignity and pride as old as his family name.

And as the hours roll by

No-ones there to see me cry

Except the sunrise, the sunrise and you

Our wedding day was beautiful. I've never seen him more joyful--or so sad. Everything aside, he loved his mother and father, but they were wrong, and he knew it. They had chosen the wrong side in the war, and he knew it.

So I watched him as he looked out the window and stared at the sky. A distant pain clouding his eyes. Then he turned, and pain faded away into a look of pure love. My breath caught in my throat at the sight.

Tired eyes drift across the shore

Looking for love and nothing more

But as the sea roll by

No-one's there to see me cry

Except the sunrise, the sunrise and you

Our honeymoon was bliss. We could only afford a few days away. Our friends had insisted that we go, so we went. But we would stay away no longer than we had to. We returned to disaster. Our enemy had made a major strike at the Ministry during our absence. Instantly we were thrown into a whirlwind of planning. My talent lay in arithmancy, and that is where I went. My husband joined my best friend in defense planning.

The battle came quickly. No one stayed behind. All of us fought--all of us were needed. Only the medical staff stayed behind. My best friend fought Voldemort himself -- as we had always known he would.

But while my best friend was victorious, my husband was not. He was killed in battle by his father. When I came to his side, there was a lasting pain etched onto both of their faces, and I knew exactly what this had cost them both.

I held his body and wept.

Sunrise new day hear my song

I'm tired of fighting and fooling around

From now to who knows when

My sword shell be my pen

And I love you for all of my time

All but four of us believed that my husband was just the same as his family. I was told over and over that marrying him was a mistake. They were wrong. I could feel it in his every touch, every caress. I could feel it in the way he would greet me with a gentle kiss and tired smile in the evenings. I could feel it in the way he prepared my tea in that special way that only he could do.

I won't let the world forget him. He contributed greatly to our side during the war. And I would find out later that he fought his father in an attempt to hold him off of my best friend as he dueled our enemy.

I won't let the world forget how wrong they were.

When my husband died, a part of my very soul died with him. He completed me in a way that no one else could.

The sun rises now. My husband's favorite part of the day. He used to tell me that it was during the sun rise that he decided to allow himself to love me. We treasured those moments together. And it is now that I feel him as if he were beside me.

Sunrise

Bless my eyes

Catch my soul

Make me whole again
