Clock Tower: The First Fear
Chapter 1:The Unsuspected Surprise
Walking up to the big, iron gate just outside the grounds of the Barrow’s mansion, I looked at the address jotted down on the slip of paper in my hand. Wondering why I had to be the one delivering papers all the way out here, I leaned against the thick, iron bar.
“Woah…It’s huge…”I breathed to myself. I could barely see the top of the mansion over all the trees. If you were to see me at the time, you would have seen a boy of about 14 years, with white, low-cut Converse, dark blue skinny-jeans, a bright yellow T-shirt layering over a long-sleeved navy and light blue striped shirt under a gray zip-up hoodie with the sleeves cut off.
Placing my bike dawning a basket full of newspapers by the side of the road, I pushed at the gate. It didn’t move.
“That’s weird…” I said to myself. Turning to go, I jumped at the sound of the iron creaking and scraping against concrete. Whirling around, I was shocked to see that the dark, iron gate had opened. No one was there.
“H-hello?” I called out nervously, “It’s Jourdan, your new paperboy…”
No response. Taking a deep breath in, I shook my long, wavy, dark brown hair to the left and out of my eyes and took a few steps inside the grounds.
Suddenly, the iron gate closed with a clang behind me. Yelping in surprise, I turned around and started pulling at the gates. They didn’t budge.
“Hey! W-what’s going on?!” I cried.
Again, no response. I checked my watch. 8:00. It’s almost getting dark.
Why’d I have to take the late shift? I thought to myself, I’m stuck inside the grounds of some weird mansion, right when it’s getting dark out.
Figuring that I might be able to call my parents from the phone inside the mansion, I began walking up the dirt path towards the massive house. About 15 minutes later, I finally stood in front of the massive doors of the Mansion. Grumbling and huffing at the stupid rich people who owned this place in my head, I knocked on the door. To my sarcastic surprise, nobody answered.
“Jeez, I wonder what they do on Halloween…” I said aloud. Curious, I tried at the door knob. It opened.
Should I go in…? I thought in my head. After several seconds of arguing with myself I finally decided that it’s their fault I’m locked in here so they should at least show some decency and let me use their phone. Slowly pushing to door open, I peered inside.
On the floor was a rich, red carpet with a table and two chairs standing by the window. On the right there was a door and stairs leading to a hallway on the second floor. Looking up, I saw a beautiful, stained glass window in the shape of a circle.
“Dang, these rich people are loaded...” I whispered while walking inside, “Hello?” I called, “Is anyone here?”
Suddenly the door shut behind me…again. Yelping again in surprise, I desperately turned at the knob only to find that it’s locked.
“What’s with you people and doors?!” I shouted. Not expecting a response, I jumped when I heard a girl’s scream. Snapping my head to the stairs, I backed up until I was leaning against the door. Terrified, I heard the sound of footsteps, a metallic sound, and then a door being opened and then slammed shut from the behind one of the doors upstairs.
My heart beating fast, I cautiously walked up to the bottom of the stairs. Usually I would have run away at this sort of situation but there was no other way out from where I was. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, I slowly made my way up the wooden stairs. Once at the top, I looked at the door where I heard the noise. I walked up to it; hand’s trembling and turned the knob.
Inside was a long, wooden-floored hallway with many doors along the walls. I began to walk nervously down the hallway, my sneakers making a dull thud with each step. Just as I was about to reach the other end of the hallway, a door to my right flew open about 8 feet away from me. A small man, no, thing, stepped out. He was tiny; only about 4 feet tall and was wearing some weird green schoolboy’s outfit. He would have been really funny if he wasn’t holding a huge pair of garden shears covered in some red liquid that didn’t seem right to me.
“What the…?”I said out loud, “Who the hell are you?”
Obviously he didn’t like the little greeting I gave him. He turned to me and I screamed in horror. His face was horribly disfigured and mutilated. He let out a demonic cackle and began to walk towards me; closing and shutting his murderous weapon; making a “Shing!!” with every step. Trusting my instincts, I turned and ran as fast as my legs would carry me down the hallway. Looking behind me, I saw that he was walking after me. Not running but walking. Like he was taunting me. I grabbed the handle of the door to my left and practically threw myself in. Scrambling up on my feet, I looked around for a place to hide. Inside there were two twin beds and a parrot inside of a cage sitting on a wooden dresser. Over to the left of the room, was a vanity mirror. Moving swiftly, I slid under the twin bed on the right of the room.
I held my breath as the door opened and the little man limped in; opening and closing his scissors with each limped step he took. My heart was pounding in my ears as he made his way around the room. Deciding I must have left through the door on the other side of the room, he turned to leave. He was just about to open the door when-
“He’s under the bed!! Squawk!! He’s under the bed!!” the parrot in the cage cried.
I felt as though I was hit by lightening and quickly hoped that he wouldn’t believe the bird. To my horror, he began walking towards my hiding spot. He stood in-between the beds for a couple seconds; his ankles next to my terrified face. Suddenly, he stabbed through the mattress of the other bed thinking I was under it. I screamed and rolled out from the other side of the bed and away from what I decided to call Scissorman. He looked at me and began to make his way towards me. I desperately looked around and grabbed the first thing I saw. The bird cage. I turned around and hurled it at his face; the parrot screeching as he flew through the air. It knocked Scissorman off-balanced and he fell backwards to the floor. I quickly whirled around, grabbing the knob, and bolted out the door and into the hallway.
I flew down the hallway and skidded to a halt in front of the door leading downstairs. Desperately turning at the knob, I practically screamed in frustration when I found out it was locked. I heard a door open down the hallway and realized that he was still chasing me. I pressed my shoulder against the next door over, turned the knob, and ran in. Slamming the door shut behind me I held my breath as I leaned with my back against the door and prayed he wouldn't find me.
His footsteps became louder as he walked towards my door and then stopped. I heard him try the knob. Quickly, but quietly, I held the knob tightly;making him think it was locked. Giving up, he walked further down the hall until I heard him enter another room and close the door behind him.
"That was way too close for my liking..."I murmered, "Now where am I?" Looking around, I found out that I was in some sort of storage closet. Mentally storing this place as a hiding spot, I stepped out into the hall again. I turned right and began walking towards the end of the hall where I first saw Scissorman.
"How am I gonna get out of here..?"I whispered to myself. Walking farther down down the hallway, I heard the faint sound of a shower running. A couple more steps and the sound was telling me that it was behind the door I was standing in front of. I grabbed the knob and quickly drew my hand back as if I'd been shocked.
"Ow!"I cried out, "Why's it all hot...?"I whispered. Deciding I'd rather not find out, I turned to go. Suddenly, the door burst open and a girl about my age with long black hair ran out. She was wearing a long dark blue dress with a white blouse and black leather shoes. She was cute other than the fact that she had a look of pure terror on her face.
"What the hell?!"I yelled as she ran into me. She quickly looked at me and showed a look of enormous relief on her face. Then she remembered what she was running from and grabbed my wrist while pulling me down the hallway towards the door to the main hall.
"Whats going on?!"I screamed as I almost stumbled and fell.
"Hes coming after us!"She yelled.
I automatically knew who she was talking about and turned my head as I ran. There stood Scissorman; standing in front of the open door as water spread out and into the hallway under him. From the steam I saw erupting from the top of the door to the whisps from the water I figured that the boiling hot water was the reason for the hot door handle.
We ran until we stood in front of the door to the staircase.
"Its locked!I already tried it!"I screamed, turning to run farther down the hall.
"No!I have the key!"the mystery girl cried as she pulled out an old looking, brass key and slid it into the keyhole. She turned the key; unlocking the door with a soft "Click!" Grabbing the knob, she yanked open the door and together we ran out of the long hallway and down the stairs. I was about to go to the door on the left but she grabbed my wrist again and dragged me through the door to the right.
"Where are we going?!"I shouted over the pounding of our footsteps on the wooden floor. This time she didn't reply and just kept running until we passed through another door that led into a hallway that looked identical to the one we were pursued by Scissorman in. We ran into the first room on our right and slammed the door behind us.
Taking the time to catch our breath, we looked at eachother and then around the room. We seemed to be in some sort of living room; 2 couches parallel to eachother in front of a great fireplace with a eerie looking painting above it. On the left was a T.V standing next to a tall dresser. Over on the right of the room was a window with majestic curtains around its frame.
"T-thanks."I panted, "I probabaly would have been running for ages.."
"No problem." she huffed back, "Who are you?"
"I'm Jourdan."I replied, sitting on the couch to the left. "I was supposed to be just delivering the newspaper, but I'm figuring theyre gonna have to pay me more than 2.50 for this..."
"Im Jennifer."She said laughing. "But you can call me Jen."
"Well why are you here?"I asked uncertainly.
Jennifer looked down with a sad look on her face and then glanced out the window she was standing next to.
"...My friends...And I...We were expecting to live a new life...With wonderful adopting parents..."she whispered soft enough to where I had to lean forward to hear.
"Your friends are here?!"I said, shocked, "Where are they?"
Again, Jennifer was silent. She looked at me, tears gently falling onto her folded arms.
"...One of them...Laura...she's..."she whispered ever so softly.
After a moment, I finally found the message she was giving me. Now I knew what she had seen in that bathroom...
"I..Im sorry Jennifer.." I said walking so I was standing next to her, "It's gonna be ok!"I said encouragingly, "Were gonna find your friends and get out of here alive!"
She looked at me and smiled through her tears.
"Youre right." she said, "Were getting out of here with Ann and Lotte."
"Thats the spirit!"I cried hugging her while she laughed, "Alrighty then!Lets find your friends!"
Nodding, we walked across the room and out into the hallway.
"Where should we look first?"I asked her, hoping she knew the house better than me.
"Lets go back upstairs...Maybe theyre up there together."she replied.
Together we walked out of the door and into the great hall with the stained glass window in the ceiling. We walked up the wooden stairs and into the hallway where we first saw Scissorman. Deciding to go left, we walked on until we heard a scream from outside. Looking at eachother in horror, we ran to the window just in time to see a girl in a long, green dress with long, brown hair fly out of the window and splash into the pool below.
"Ann!"Jennifer screamed as she ran through the next door. I looked a second longer out the window in time to see Scissorman standing in front of the window looking as though he had just won a game of tag. I followed Jennifer until we, somehow, made it downstairs again and out the door to the backyard where we saw Ann fall into the pool.
Running across the lawn as fast as we could, we saw Ann sputtering and trying to swim to the side of the pool; a cloud of red erupting around her.
"Ann!"Jennifer screamed again and jumped into the pool.
"Jennifer!"Ann yelled in reply as the two girls embraced in the water.
"Save the reunion for later!"I yelled, standing at the edge of the pool and pointing at the window Ann flew out of. The two looked up and screamed when they saw that Scissorman was still standing there...threateningly.
Swimming to me, they grabbed my hands as I pulled the two girls up and out of the water. The three of us ran back through the door where Jennifer lead me and back into the hallway where we saw Ann fall.
"Follow me!"I cried as I ran to my hiding spot I had stumbled upon earlier. We ran to the door, piled in, and shut the door behind us. The seconds seemed like hours as we hid inside the storage closet; each girl clinging on to one of my arms.
Suddenly, we heard footsteps. Faint at first, but steadily growing louder. They grew louder and louder until they stopped at our hiding spot. Looking at the girls in silent horror, I held my breath.
Without warning, a huge pair of scissors stabbed through the door; stopping barely an inch from our faces. I screamed "Run!!" and shoved the the door open as hard as I could. Scissorman hadn't expected this and was carried along with the door and thrown against the wall. We bolted past his limp body leaning against the wall and ran out the door to the main hall, down the stairs and through the left door. We were met with another hallway.
"Not another damn hallway!"Ann screamed angrily as we ran down. We stopped at a room and ran in; locking the door behind us. Breathing a sigh of relief, we all leaned against the door and slid down to the floor. Looking around, we found that we were in a kitchen. The refridgerator over by the left of the room standing about 5 feet away from what looked to be a meat locker.
"Man are we lucky..."I said to the girls.
"Yeah...I thought we were done for..."Jennifer murmered.
"Well look on the bright side!" Ann said, "We werent cut up like all those fake women on Dr.90210!"
Laughing, we stood up walked over to the table placed in the middle of the room.
"Hey Jennifer..."Ann whispered to her best friend, "Who's that guy?" She asked, pointing at me.
"Oh!I forgot!"She said. "Jourdan, this is Ann. Ann, this is Jourdan."
"Hey."I said, shaking her hand.
"Well arent you our knight in shining armor."She laughed along with Jennifer.
I turned red.
"Yeah...I guess you could call me that..."I said. "Hey Ann!"I suddenly cried.
"What?!"Ann cried back.
"Youre hurt!"
"I am?"She asked looking down at her stomach. There was a shallow stab wound right in the middle just above her belly button.
"Hey...I said I was THINKING about getting my belly button pierced...I wasnt setting it in stone."She joked.
"I can fix that up!"I said enthusiastically.
"You can?"Ann and Jennifer said together.
"Yup!Im gonna be a doctor someday!"I replied with a smile, "But thats only if my singing or acting career doesnt work out."
Ann gave Jennifer a look meaning "Isnt this guy perfect or what?!" which Jennifer returned with a small smile.
"Alrighty then...I need to find some rubbing alcohol..."I murmered quietly as I looked through the cabinets. Finding some red wine, I figured that that would have to do.
"Now I just need a swab of something cotton..."I said aloud to the two girls.
Jennifer looked around and plucked up a suprisingly clean cotton rag on the counter and handed it to me.
"Alright...This is gonna hurt a little."I mumbled as Ann got on the table and lifted up her shirt about 4 inches above her waist; revealing the small, gaping wound. I dabbed the rag in the red wine and gently pressed it against her cut. Oddly, she didnt scream or kick like the usual responses I got from my little brother. Once all cleaned, I looked around for some tape. I found some white medical tape in the drawer and was wondering why it was all so easy to find the things I need in a house Ive never been in before. Taping a clean peace of the rag over her cut in a square shape, I was finally done.
"Thanks!"She said in awe as she jumped down from the table, "It feels like Im not even cut!"
"Yeah I tend to have that effect on women."I said smirking.
Jennifer and Ann laughed and stood next to me.
"Now lets look around here...maybe we could find something."Jennifer said to Ann and me.
Nodding in response, we began to look around the room. I walked over to the meat locker while Ann looked in the Fridge and Jennifer looked in the cabinets.
I pulled on the handle and opened the meat locker. Suddenly, a swarm of flies, mosquitoes, and who knows what else zoomed out at me. Yelping in surprise, I slammed the door shut; crushing one of the huge bugs that almost made it out.
"What was that?"Jennifer asked caustiously stepping next to me.
"It was alot of bugs...Flying bugs."I said rubbing my arms nervously.
"Ewwwwwwww!"Ann cried, "That's so gross!!"
"Before I slammed it shut, I thought I saw something shiny in there...It looked like a key."I told them.
"We need something to kill the bugs with..."Jennifer said to nobody in particular.
"Lets go through the rooms."I said, "Maybe we could find a spray or something."
Together we unlocked the door and looked both ways to see if Scissorman was out there. Stepping out, we cautiously looked around. Sadly, there were about a dozen doors to choose from.
"3 words."Ann said, "Damn halls."
"Thats 2 words."I said looking at her.
"Then Ill say it differently!" she cried, "Stupid, damn halls!"
We all laughed and started trying each door. After several minutes, Jennifer had opened a door and beckoned for us to go over to her.
"I think I found something.!"She called to us as we rushed over.
Walking slowly into the room, we stood at the doorway. Inside was two tall bookshelves about halfway along the room; showing some odd space behind it. On the floor to the right was some rope while next to the bookshelves there was a crate. Over to the left of the room, there was 2 cans of what looked to be spraypaint on the floor.
"See?"Jennifer said as she walked over to the cans and picked one up, "It says insecticide."
"Great!"I cried, "Now we can-''I was stopped short as I heard something rumbling around in the crate near the bookshelf. Eyes wide, Jennifer and Ann stood next to me on both sides.
"W-whats that?"I stuttered, pointing at the shaking crate.
"Lets...Lets go guys..."Ann said shakily.
We turned to leave with the insecticide when suddenly, the door slammed shut; the lock clicking as it closed.
"No!!" we screamed as we began pounding on the door. Suddenly, we heard the creak of the wood as the crate's lid slowly opened. Turning slowly, we all looked at the box with looks of pure terror on our faces. We braced ourselves as it finally slid up and off the crate showing nothing but darkness in the box below. I gave the girls a look that meant "Start looking for the key out of here..." Fully understanding my message, they desperately began to search around the room behind me.
I cautiously picked up the second can of insecticide. In the blink of an eye, Scissorman jumped out of his crate and charged at me with his blood-drenched scissors. I threw the can of insecticide at him. Not knowing what would happen. He reacted by snipping at the can; making it explode and release its deadly toxins. He began to what I'd think was scream and rampaged towards the door. Unfortunately I was directly in front of the door and he ended up knocking me aside and into the wall with his scissors.
He stabbed at the door knob with his scissors until he literally knocked the door off its hinges and ran down the hall and out of sight. Jennifer and Ann saw this as an escape and dragged me by the legs out of the dangerous fumes filling the room. Once out in the hallway, a coughing Ann smacked me across the face and started shouting "Wake up!" What she didnt know was that I was awake but just resting. After 3 more smacks I grabbed her hand and yelled "Ok Im awake Ann!!" Quickly apologizing for her mistake, they helped me up.
"Did you get the insecticide?"I asked Jennifer.
"Yeah, right here."she said taking the can out of her pocket.
"Aright...Lets go get the key..."Ann said breathlessly.
We walked back, coughing, to the kitchen and closed and locked the door behind us.
"Phew...Jourdan,"Jennifer said gasping and leaning against the table, "Next time, Dont do that!"
"Sorry, I just sort of...reacted."I replied with a little laugh.
"Yeah well dont sort of 'react' next time." Ann said with a smirk.
Rolling my eyes, I took the can of insecticide from Jennifer and walked over to the meat locker. With a reassuring look from Ann and Jennifer, I quickly opened the door and sprayed. The bugs stopped dead in their tracks and fell from the air dead.
"Woah...Do the make this stuff for homicidal murderers?"I asked them while reaching into the locker and grabbing the key.
"Ok we got the key, lets get out of here..."Ann said.
Just as we were about to leave, Jennifer suddenly stopped and ran back to the meat locker. Reaching in, she pulled out a hunk of the rotten meat and put it in her pocket.
"Jennifer, this is no time for your cravings to start!"Ann cried frustrated.
"Its not for me!" Jennifer explained, "For all we know, we could be attacked by some crazed, possesed animal or something."
"I still dont get it."I said looking at Ann confused.
"Idiot, she means that the animal would go for the meat instead of us!"she replied swatting my shoulder.
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..."I said tonelessly. Walking out the door and into the hallway once again, we decided to go farther down the hallway hoping that one of the rooms held Jennifer's friend Lotte.
