Betrayal of Happiness

Summary: Wilson’s getting married, Cuddy’s pregnant. Will House finally find some happiness or is he sentenced to misery and pain for the rest of his life? Chapter 1

He’d remembered when Cuddy had told him that she was pregnant – actually he’d worked it out. After her final round of invitro fertilisation it had stuck – despite all failing hopes and worries from her, it had stuck. He wasn’t sure if he was happy – he was happy for her, but it was different. He didn’t know how he felt. Now it was Wilson. Wilson’s turn to be happy, his turn to be unsure again.

Everything around him was changing, and he was stuck in limbo. He was fine with his life – he wasn’t happy, but he didn’t need to be. He had a great job, his pills allowed him to cope with his pain and he was fine – he didn’t need to be happy.
He used to wish that he could be happy, wish for the woman that he loved but he’d given up on that – he didn’t need it anymore.

Wilson had come to him a few days before. He’d been increasingly happy later and House knew why – he gossiped like a schoolgirl and he couldn’t keep secrets.

“I’m getting married.” He told him. House hadn’t known what to say. He’d eventually congratulated him, but it had shook him. He wasn’t sure why – Wilson always married his girlfriends – if he loved them enough then it was inevitable. He’d tried to stop Cuddy from falling into that trap, but then she’d found out that she was pregnant so she’d stopped it herself. Being pregnant changed everything. Now Wilson getting married did. He guessed that he was… happy for his friend – in some way.

He’d asked him to be his best man. He had to really – Wilson was House’s only friend and he doubted that Wilson really had any other friends. He’d agreed – it’d be mean to do anything else. He needed to… support his friend really, let him know that he’d be there for him. That was something that he never did, and Wilson took his actions to mean that even if he wasn’t actually doing it. House was trying to be happy for him, trying not to screw this up. Just because he wasn’t happy didn’t mean that Wilson didn’t have to be. He deserved to be – he’d just remind him to keep Jimmy Junior in his pants – he’d actually let him be with his wife.

They’d eventually set a date – July 31st. The end of summer was a beautiful hot time – it would be nice, they deserved nice. They served to have something, anything – love maybe. He wished he had someone – his friends were happy, he wanted to be happy… somehow. He’d messed his chances up; lost the opportunity to be with the woman he loved. He wasn’t sure if he loved her, but he definitely liked her. He doubted that she returned his feelings, especially now – he just wanted to be there for her, especially now.

Since Stacy he hadn’t thought about love. He had his hookers, but he didn’t feel like he needed anything else. His job kept him busy and ‘happy’, he was fine. He was private and didn’t like to share – sharing his life was hard. Opening up and letting people in was harder. This woman was already there – she knew a lot, he just had to say one little thing. But he couldn’t – his likeness of her prevented him from doing so. He didn’t want to screw up the friendship that they barely had – she deserved better than that. She needed to be happy, especially now. He’d put her through too much – she needed this chance.

But he wanted to be happy – happy with her. If only he could just tell her, find some way to. That was what would make him happy – he deserved it too.
