Late nights at the 1-6 precinct were not an uncommon thing for the detectives of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit. On this particular night, the full moon was the only thing that lit the room besides the glow of the computer monitor. There was one person in the room, and the moonlight seemed to be directed on him like a spotlight.

Elliot Stabler sat at his desk, his head resting in his hand as he leaned on the desk. His right hand gently caressed the mouse as he read the words on the glowing screen. As the seconds ticked by, he could feel his eyes getting dryer and dryer. Finally, after finishing the paragraph, he forced himself to blink.

After forcing himself to open his eyelids again, he realized just how tired he was. Sighing, he brought his right and up and brushed it over his blue eyes. Usually by now, he would be expecting a call from Kathy asking him where he was. Or maybe even Captain Cragen busting into the squad room and demanding that everyone go home and rest. Instead, he got nothing.

Feeling completely blocked off from the world, he closed the internet browser on his computer and stared at the desktop for a moment. He could feel his eyelids getting heavy as he leaned back in his chair. He gave into temptation and closed his sleepy eyes.

After a while, he had lost track of time and had dozed off. He was startled by the sound of the doors echoing throughout the empty squad room as they closed. Nearly jumping out of his seat, he opened his eyes and spotted his partner and best friend, Olivia Benson, coming over to where he sat.

“Hey.” was all she said as she slid up onto his desk and looked down at him. He just frowned as stared out of her. She smirked and pressed on. “So, can I ask why you’re still here?”

“Just doing some work.” was his reply. It had taken him what seemed like an eternity to form the response. He was taking in the sight of the beautiful woman sitting in front of him. She was perched on top of his desk, on foot resting on the edge of the chair barely touching his thigh. Her other leg was stretched out as it held her up. Her hands were shoved deep into the pockets of her jeans. Elliot’s eyes wandered up to the slightest hint of cleavage peaking out from the lavender v-neck sweater.

“It’s close to midnight. Shouldn’t you be home?” Olivia tilted her head sideways and stared at him with caring eyes.

The question had caught him off guard. Sure, had been expecting it and he had even rehearsed his reply over and over in his head before the words were spoken. But now, he couldn’t find the courage to say anything. And when her wonderful chocolate brown eyes stared at him demanding an answer, he squeaked out his reply as far from the one he had rehearsed as humanly possible in a small voice barely audible to the human ear.

“There’s no one there…” he looked away, slightly ashamed. When the initial shock had disappeared from Olivia’s face, he looked back up and waited for her to say something.

“Oh…El, I’m so…so sorry.” she said softly. There was a hint of something Elliot could only classify as excitement in her voice. He chose not to say anything and to just analyze his partner’s features, hoping to get some answers that way. When Olivia realized he wasn’t going to reply to her, she spoke again.

“I-if you w-want you c-can stay at my house.” Olivia asked, slightly nervous. She desperately hoped he would say yes, but knew that he wouldn’t want her company at home, and that he needed to deal with his divorce on his own.

“Maybe another time.” Elliot replied quietly. He could see the pain in his partner’s eyes as she broke the gaze. “Olivia, I just wanted you to know this isn’t your fault.” he said suddenly.

“I never thought it was.” Olivia said almost immediately after, maybe a little too quickly.

“I just thought that maybe…” Elliot was quickly cut off.

“Stop thinking without the proper equipment, Stabler.” she slid off the desk and headed for the door. Before she exited, she turned back and gazed at him one more time. “See you tomorrow.” was all she said as she pushed through the door.

As soon as his partner was gone, he let out a sigh of relief and closed his eyes again. Ever since he had told her about the divorce, the tension between the two of them was almost unbearable. He knew that she cared about him and that it was all that she could do to sound sympathetic. He didn’t know whether he should be distant as well, or try to get closer to her. Was it possible that she was just waiting for him to make the decision?

Elliot decided that he would experiment, but maybe at an hour of the day where he could actually keep his eyes open.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo

Olivia opened the door to the crib in hopes of finding her partner. The darkness made of the room caught her by surprise and she instinctively reached for the light switch. As she flipped the plastic switch, the room instantly filled with light. Olivia spotted Elliot laying on one of the cots in the middle of the room. She smiled to herself, knowing that he was a heavy sleeper.

She made her way over to the side of the cot and knelt down beside him. He was laying on side, with his back facing her. Trying not to laugh at his light snoring, she reached up and placed her hand on his bicep and shook him. Startled, he jumped up and flung his arm at her.

“Elliot!” Olivia gasped as she fell backwards trying to dodge his flying arm. He just sat there, eyes wide, staring at her.

“Olivia? What are you doing?” he questioned. She stuck her arms out behind her to prop herself up. She cocked her head and sighed. Lifting an eyebrow, she replied.

“I was waking you up. It’s almost nine. I was saving you from Cragen. He going ballistic about everything, and the last thing he needed was for one of his best detectives to be late because he was working till midnight.” Olivia gripped the edge of the cot behind her and pushed herself off the floor and up onto the cot.

“Well, then should we get down there?” he rubbed his temple as he swung his legs over the side of the cot and sat across form her.

“Yes.” Olivia let her eyes wander to everything but his bright blue eyes.

“Then lets go.” he stood and extended a hand. Without meeting his gaze, she placed her slender hand in his and stood up. She let her hand linger in his before pulling it out.

“Hey…” he trailed off as he tipped her chin up so her chocolate brown eyes would lock with his blue ones. He lips were slightly parted as they stared at each other. After a few moments, Elliot blinked. He dropped his hand and she instantly looked away.

“Thanks for having my back.” he said as they headed to the door.
