Storyline: After leaving Malibu (or rather being kicked out of home) Jackson settles down in his new life with a new name. However, he finds his past catching up to him when he runs into Lilly once again, realising that there were some things that never left his mind. Lilly in the meantime tries to fool herself that she's happy and from the outside, many would say she is. Little do they know she harbours some deep emotions, which reveal themselves in Las Vegas. Rated M for what I gather are obvious reasons.
“Here, I figured you could use another one.” Jackson’s best friend, Mark came over and handed him a beer. “You look like you’ve been through shit. Plus by the looks of Rita, you’re not getting any love tonight.”
Jackson stared over at Rita, the girl who Mark had been trying to set him up with. She looked even less attractive to him as she threw up in the sand after one too many. “I just need to get out of the house. Frustrating isn’t even the word, dude. It’s suffocating, like a big plastic bag just shoved over my head.” To release his frustrations and keep from rambling, he downed his beer to a chorus of his chanting friends.
Mark nodded as he seemed to know exactly what was going on. It was those understandings that lead to their friendship in the first place. Both had respective family issues and didn’t care too much about collage. The two were brought together by their need to escape reality, which they found out by bonding over a few joints one day.
“Just take it easy on the beer there, man. Catch you later.” Mark knew that Jackson wasn’t in the party mood but rather in one of the ‘Screw the World’ moods which most people in the presence of the fire knew all too well.
Jackson waved him off, seeing an unfinished vodka bottle he tried to convince himself that he wasn’t that desperate. He didn’t need it, at least for a few moments. The thoughts that he had drowned out were slowly creeping back and in his experience, Jackson knew few ways to make them go away. Being through with accepting the feelings of inadequacy and anger, he grabbed the vodka and swigged it.
Sick of seeing everyone else having a good time, Jackson began walking along the beach. With the bottle still in his hand, he stumbled and fell down. He started laughing, rolling over so he stared at the sky. “He’s never going to get it. There is no way to make him get it. I could die right here and never make it to the hospital because, god forbid Hannah misses another concert!”
He looked towards the direction of his house, wondering what was happening inside. Wondering how they handled without him yet again. Jackson started trudging back towards it, laughing at the certainty that his father would once again let it slide. It didn’t matter how badly he screwed up, Robbie always expected him to mess up everything he touched. No matter what his dad told him, Jackson would always overhear when he told Miley the opposite. Taking another swig from the vodka bottle, Jackson allowed himself to laugh at the thoughts once again.
Drunkenly he stumbled up the stairs to his house. He tried not to make too much noise as he made his way to the balcony doors. Fumbling around looking for the right key to open the lock, the lights suddenly came on in the living room.
“Come on son, get in the house.” Robbie opened the doors and practically threw Jackson through the door. “Now do you mind telling me where you were tonight?”
“Let’s see, I was hanging out with my friends and living my life, like I should have been doing for so long.” Jackson tried to take another gulp but, before he could, Robbie snatched the drink. “Give that back asshole!”
Robbie shook his head, remaining composed while he asked another question. “You were supposed to take Miley and Lilly to the concert while I go to the meeting to organise the next European tour. I specifically asked you to do that and instead you go get drunk with your friends. What happened to you?”
Jackson started laughing like crazy. “Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realise that I was the slave because for a minute I thought I was your son. I should have known better all these years, I’m sorry SIR!”
“Jackson, just stop. Come on and sit down. I’ll get you some water.” Robby grabbed his son’s arm, but Jackson jerked away.
“No, can’t you see I’m sick of doing what you say? Can’t you see that I’m sick of all this bullshit you keep spitting out about loving Miley and me both the same?” Jackson grabbed his bottle back with a force to be reckoned with. “From now on, I do what I want. I get my life back.”
Robby’s anger began to surface and he once again snatched Jackson’s bottle. “Give me that. Now you live under this roof, you live by the rules, is that clear. That means no more of this. I’ve had it up to here. This is the last time any of this is going to happen here.”
“You mean if I live here anything I do goes absolutely un-noticed. I guess that’s an advantage when I want to smoke a joint in my bathroom.” Jackson slurred back, trying to get at his dad. The rage within him was rising but for some reason he kept laughing.
Finally on his last straw with his son, sick of the many nights they had spent fighting, tired of seeing his son come home drunk and throwing his life away, Robby snapped. He threw the bottle down and smashed it. “Jackson I am sick of all this! All you ever do now is disrespect me.”
“Yes, because you respect me so very much.” Jackson replied sarcastically before returning his father’s angry gaze once again. “I’m nothing compared to your precious Miley am I? You think I don’t hear what you call me the pig, the screw up and all the rest. Maybe mom had the right idea I mean, rotting in the ground is better than being treated like a slave.” Jackson spat back, too wasted to take back the words that even in his state knew were a very big mistake.
A loud slap echoed throughout the house as Robby’s hand connected with Jackson’s face. “If you don’t like the way it is, you can get the hell out.”
Shocked that his father had struck him for the first time in his life, Jackson couldn’t even speak. He just walked out the front door, slamming it loudly behind him. He was too angry to even think about turning back. No turning back to talk to his father, who as he walked away sat on the couch staring at his hand wondering what went wrong while fighting back the urge to cry.
Lilly tip-toed after him. Watching him go out the front door, she walked over to the window to peek out. Seeing him packing other bags into his car made her heart beat faster at the possible reason. Unable to contain herself, it was as though her feelings moved her legs for her. When she found herself standing a few feet away from him she finally spoke. “What’s going on? Why all the stuff?”
Jackson turned to Lilly, a little annoyed by the interruption. “Nice PJ’s by the way.”
Looking down, Lilly noticed she was still wearing her blue pyjamas with sheep print. She felt a blush creep to her cheeks before pushing her embarrassment aside. “Where are you going?”
“What’s it to you whether I stay or go?” Jackson didn’t even bother to look at her as he stuffed the last bag in the back of his car.
“I heard the fight last night, it was kind of hard not to.” Lilly went over to Jackson’s side. To comfort him, she touched him arm. “I was wondering if you were okay.”
“It’s been awhile since anyone has asked me that.” Jackson confessed, not knowing why he was beginning to dump his problems on Lilly. “Truth is I haven’t been okay for awhile.”
As though her hand had a will of its own, Lilly swiftly took Jackson’s hand in her own and squeezed it. “So you’re really just going to leave?”
“It’s an option.” Jackson turned to Lilly, suddenly not so sure he wanted to go. He looked down at their joined hands with a confused look. “What are you doing?”
“I’m holding your hand.” Lilly stated the obvious, though realising that she was starting to feel awkward covered the silence. “It’s what friends do when another friend is upset.”
“I’m not upset, I’m pissed off.” Jackson replied bluntly, letting go of Lilly’s hand. “Besides, what makes you think you have any idea what I’m feeling?”
Lilly shuffled her feet on the driveway, no matter how much she had secretly watched Jackson she had only known her own feelings and even those she had denied for so long. A part of her could guess sometimes, but he would always cover it up with sarcasm or one of his quirky moments and convince her he was okay. She thought of those times, trying to get into Jackson’s head. There was no way of ignoring the potential heart breaking situation at hand.
“You feel unappreciated, used and maybe even unloved.” Lilly spoke up, causing Jackson to stop in his tracks and prove she had hit a nerve. “In the background, while your sister gets the spotlight. No matter what happens in your life, they can’t be there when a Hannah thing is on. You want it to just be normal, but it’s never going to be.” Lilly realised that she was speaking a little from her own experiences. Meeting Jackson’s eyes, there was an understanding that he felt them too. Except Lilly knew it was worse for him, since she was the best friend and Jackson was supposed to be family.
“I didn’t want it. I was born in to it. So I think it should be my choice when I want to leave it.” Jackson opened up to Lilly, but in the process he realised what he had to do. “That’s why I have to leave.”
“Look, maybe I’ve been guilty of treating you like a slave too and I’m so sorry.” Lilly told him, beginning to open up a little herself. “Your family and friends will miss you. I know I’ll miss you.”
Jackson shook his head and smiled briefly. He turned back to Lilly. “You don’t have to apologise. In fact, you’ve been pretty cool over these past years.”
“In that case…” Stubbornly, Lilly jumped in the passenger seat of his car. “If you’re leaving then you’ll have to take me with you.”
“You know I can’t do that.” Jackson replied, convinced that Lilly would cave in.
“If you can leave, then so can I. I’m not letting you leave without thinking this through. I can tell you secretly don’t want to go. Why don’t you just talk about the fight and everything else?” Lilly’s voice began to rise.
Every nice thought from their conversation had been put aside. “Get out of the car Lilly.” Jackson snapped, folding his arms in annoyance.
“Not until you agree to stay.” Lilly bit her lip, hoping her plan worked. She hated Jackson being mad at her, but it was better to try.
Jackson opened the passenger door and grabbed Lilly’s arm. “I told you, I can’t. Now if you refuse to get out I’m going to have to pull you out.”
“No don’t!” Lilly tried to pull away, but Jackson was too strong. He yanked out of the car. Lilly’s tears finally fell. “Fine, leave! Just go!”
Jackson turned to her, feeling guilty as Lilly was just trying to show that she cared. He took her hand. She responded by aiming a slap at his face. Before it connected Jackson caught her wrist and stared into her face with intensity. He dropped her hand and it fell limp to her side.
“Fine, you’ve made your point. I’m not going anywhere.” Jackson sighed in frustration, wiping off a few of Lilly’s tears. “Now please don’t cry.” Feeling guilty about what he was going to do, he pulled Lilly into a hug. It felt a little awkward, but strangely he didn’t want to let go.
“Promise me you won’t go anywhere.” Lilly whispered.
“Okay, I promise.” Jackson replied. “Now let’s go inside and get some breakfast, I’m starving.”
Lilly skipped on ahead into the house, obviously happy that her plan worked. Jackson quickly turned back and ran to his car. Jumping in the driver’s seat he started the engine. Just as he saw Lilly run out of the house, he backed out from the driveway. Blocking out the sound of her voice calling out to him, Jackson drove off, leaving Lilly standing in the driveway in her pyjamas feeling like a complete fool.
