The next day was extremely hectic. It started off in the morning with Karen screaming everyone awake: “OHMIGOD WHERE AM I??? Oh…heh heh…Sorry everyone, I remember now…”
All the girls got dressed for the day, which meant they threw their new Hogwarts robes over their old clothes, and went down to the Great Hall. (They sort of traveled in a pack, except Zoey and Dia hung behind the group.)
Dia and Zoey sat down at the Ravenclaw table and grabbed some breakfast food. When the morning owls streamed in, they both jumped nearly a mile.
“Did you get an animal?” Dia asked Zoey.
“I was about to ask you the same thing. Yeah, I got a cat, she was running around on the train, that’s why I didn’t have her with me in the compartment…”
“You saw my owl, right? Her name’s Midnight.”
“It’s one freaky owl, too,” said Zoey, grinning.
They both picked up their schedules and read them over.

(Yeah, I KNOW its different than its supposed to be. I had to change them a little bit.)
“So, we go with the Slytherins to Herbology first…?” said Zoey.
“Yeah. I wonder where Herbology is held…”
“Its held in the greenhouse, genius,” said an icy voice. “Everyone knows that. What did you think the green houses were for?”
Zoey and Dia looked up to see Kaori, with two other girls on her sides, sneering down at them.
“Well I kinda didn’t see the greenhouses,” snapped Zoey, “as they were on the opposite side of the castle when we arrived here at Hogwarts at night.”
Kaori stalked off with her friends. “See you in Charms,” she called icily over her shoulder.
Zoey muttered something that was very rude.
“Damn, she reminded me we’re taking that with her,” sighed Dia.
After breakfast, the Ravenclaw first years joined with the Slytherin first years as they were led across the lawn by a prefect.
“These are the greenhouses,” the prefect said. “Herbology will be held here.” Then he dashed off to his next class.
Zoey murmured something else pretty rude.
Just then Professor Sprout came along. She had lots of earth beneath her fingernails and wild, frizzy hair.
“Hello, first year Ravenclaws and Slytherins,” she said to the class. “In this class…” Professor Sprout explained about Herbology, then led the class into Greenhouse 1.

Their next class was Charms, and they had that with the Gryffindors. Dia and Zoey were not looking forward to it.
In Herbology, the Slytherins teased the Ravenclaws quite a bit, and Zoey couldn’t do anything about it because there was a teacher nearby. When they left that class Zoey was seething.
While they walked through the halls, a kid accidentally bumped into Zoey.
“WATCH IT!” Zoey screamed at him.
The kid was at least three years older than her, but he quailed under her glare and shout.
“Sorry,” he muttered, and scampered away.
Zoey laughed—menacingly, Dia realized. It was pretty funny, though.
“Why is everyone afraid of you?” Dia asked Zoey.
“I dunno…People probably don’t randomly scream at them too often…” Zoey looked at her out of the corner of her eye and grinned. Dia grinned back, though she felt Zoey probably wanted to scare people off for a reason.
In the next class, Dia and Zoey couldn’t help seeing Kaori give them glowering, sneering glares.
“Why does she hate us so much?” hissed Dia to Zoey.
“I really don’t have a clue,” she whispered back. “Probably cuz we’re American.”
“What the hell does that have to do with it?”
“AHEM, girls,” said Professor Flitwick loudly, and suddenly he was standing right in front of them—but of course he was very short.
“Sorry Professor,” Dia and Zoey said.
“Five points from Ravenclaw,” said Professor Flitwick, and then he continued teaching the class about what they would do in Charms—basic charms, like levitation and practical things, were in this first year.
By lunchtime, Zoey already disliked the school—except the magic part. Dia didn’t know why, though it seemed to have something with people throwing her looks in the halls. She was already telling Dia happily what she’d do with her magic.
“…And then I’d take that stupid smarmy grin off Kaori’s face for good,” she finished as they sat down.
Dia and Zoey were becoming good friends fast. They ate lunch and discussed how they were going to rid the school of Kaori’s evil perfectness when Dia heard a shout across the hall. Calvin was waving. Dia grinned and waved back.
“Dunno why he’s your friend still,” said Zoey. “He kinda bugged me…”
“He’s really nice,” Dia replied, sort of hurt at what Zoey said.
“Yeah, but still…”
They finished lunch and went to History of Magic. They were bored out of their _minds_. Professor Binns droned on and on and on about how wizards and witches came about, and how Hogwarts was founded.
Dia started to doodle on a clean piece of parchment. This school is a lot like my other school, she thought, drawing idly. Except the magic part.
She drew a stick-figure person, then with wild hair in two pigtails high on her head, and labeled it Zoey. She drew another stick figure with short black hair, and labeled it Dia. They both had evil grins. Then she drew a picture of another girl, and labeled it Kaori. Kaori was crying and holding out a hand, and Dia detailed her finger with a dented fingernail—
“Since class is so obviously fascinating to you, Dia,” said Professor Binns’ voice right above her, “would you like to read the next paragraph?”
Dia went red, and glanced down at her open book. She didn’t know where they were.
Kaori gave a giggle, a Miss Perfect, girly giggle, and so did her two friends. Professor Binns, who didn’t hear them, said, “Five points from Ravenclaw for not knowing where we are. Please read the paragraph from, ‘The Hogwarts founders were named…’”
The class ended, thankfully, a little while later. Dia sighed as they walked out of the classroom, as Zoey was saying some things about Kaori.
“I wonder why she hates you, Dia?” wondered Ashley Lynch.
“Maybe she’s jealous,” offered Karen Black.
Karen and Ashley were becoming friends quickly as well. Karen, who was unusually tall and had brown hair with two streaks of blonde and emerald green eyes, and Ashley, with red, red hair and brown eyes, didn’t like to hang in big crowds. That meant they didn’t like to hang out as the Ravenclaw girls in one big group, so Cassandra, Sydney, and Patricia, who became Tish, became friends. They didn’t seem to like Ashley and Karen.
After that, the Ravenclaw first years went up to their common room to have fun with their magic or to hang out. Zoey and Dia chose instead to wander around the corridors.
“I never thought I’d see paintings move…” Dia commented, watching a painting of a fat monk sitting on a poofy couch in a hall. He was twiddling his thumbs and yawning.
“It’s kinda funny, if you think about it. And cool.” Zoey was grinning with a weird anticipation. “I mean…this entire magical world…thing…” Zoey sighed and put her hands behind her head, looking at the ceiling. “I mean, it’s so cool – my foster parents, while wizards and witches, didn’t like to expose me to much magic. I don’t know why. The entire wizarding thing…its just so cool and different.”
“I know what you mean,” Dia said, grinning. “I thought my life would always be a hellhole, until I came here. Well, I thought it would be when I moved to Britain…”
“Where’d ya live in the USA?”
“California.”
“Cool. I lived in Maine. Lotsa snowboarding up there.” Zoey grinned eagerly.
They started talking about where they used to live, and their favorite sports.
“You know, I’m gonna miss soccer,” Dia said, sighing sadly as they reached the black cat painting.
“Me too,” Zoey sighed, making a face. “And snowboarding—but I might be able to dot hat here still. I’ve got my snowboard.” Then, suddenly, Zoey got a gleam in her eye. “Hey! We can try out for the Quidditch team!”
Dia glanced at Zoey, then grinned. “Hell yeah!”
“I wanna be a Beater!”
“Me too!”
“You got a broomstick?”
“Yep, a Comet Two-Sixty. You?”
“Yeah, me too” Zoey couldn’t help squealing with excitement. Ashley and Karen walked up to them.
“Hey guys,” Karen said. “Whatcha doin?”
“Thinking about Quidditch,” Dia replied, grinning.
“You guys gonna try out?” Ashley said. “On the message board over there, it says the openings for the places on the team.”
“Oh, cool!” Zoey squeaked, running over to it. Dia followed.
It said:
OPENINGS FOR THE RAVENCLAW QUIDDITCH TEAM:
One Chaser
Two Beaters
One Keeper
“Holy shit, they need lots of people,” remarked Jack Andersen. “They lost a lot last year…”
“Dia!” Zoey exclaimed, grinning. “We can both get on the team!”
“What’re you trying for?” sneered a snobbish voice. Cassandra was looking at the board too, and so was her brother, Alex.
“Beater,” Dia and Zoey answered at once.
Cassandra tossed her hair. “Well well, so are we. I don’t think you two will get on the team, since we’re trying.”
(Sydney and Tish blinked at Cassandra, wondering why she was being such a snob.)
“Hey, I don’t think you’d be able to get on the team,” snarled Zoey, “you seem to care too much about your looks. You know, your face could get hit by a Bludger—”
“Zoey, I’m going to—” Cassandra tried to intercept.
“—and then your beautiful little face will become all mangled and horrifying, or you’ll simply break your nose. It’s not a pretty sport, dearie.” Zoey folded her arms and closed her eyes, making a tutting noise and shaking her head while Cassandra spluttered at her. Zoey refused to hear what Cassandra was trying to say to her, and Cassandra stormed off angrily a little while later.
“Zoey, we’re going to have to live with her for seven years,” Dia muttered to Zoey.
“Yeah, I know…I just couldn’t help myself,” Zoey said, trying to smile sheepishly.
They went downstairs to eat dinner a little while later. After eating, Dia accidentally bumped into Brandon, and he pretended to turn into a big zombie and started chasing Dia around the Ravenclaws, roaring. The girls all squeaked, except Zoey, and the boys all laughed. Dia and Zoey frowned at this; it bugged them like hell, the tauntings boys did to girls sometimes.
After they went upstairs, Zoey took out a wizard’s chess set.
“My foster mom—er, Brenda gave it to me as a going-away present,” Zoey remarked. Since this chess was a lot like normal chess, they played a couple of games, which Dia won spectacularly in both. Then they went to bed, but got up a little later to test out the pranks in Zoey’s magical prank book she had bought at the bookstore. They crept into the first-year boys’ bedroom, and Zoey tapped her wand on Andrew’s head and whispered some words. The tips of his hair started to grow little blue flowers. Muffling their laughter, they ran into the common room and laughed loudly.
“Hey, what do you reckon will happen when Andrew wakes up?” Dia asked, controlling her giggles.
“Something extremely FUNNY,” Zoey said, breaking into giggles again. Then they went to bed.
