Chapter One

Fight and After Fight

“I’ve had enough of you!” Penny screamed at Seaweed, ready to throw her books at him if he made any smart moves. It was the last day of their senior year, and Penny and Seaweed were already off to a bad beginning for the summer. The students gathered around them and watched. The teachers tried to calm Penny down, but nothing worked.

“What?” Seaweed thought he was hearing things.

“I said “I’ve had enough of you!”” Penny repeated herself, her voice was hoarse.

“Fine! I’ve had enough of you too! I declare us OVER!” Seaweed stormed off, shouldering Penny. Link and Tracy came running down the hallway. Penny

Just stood there, expressionless, staring forward.

“Penny, what happened?” Link asked, trying to catch his breath.

“We could hear you all the way from the office!” Tracy said.

“Me. Seaweed. Over.” Penny said. Tracy knew what she meant, and hugged her best friend. With a glance to Link, who just stood there, he was “forced” to hug Penny too. The students started to pile out, leaving the three friends some privacy. But not for long.

“What happened to the poor baby?” they heard Amber ask. They broke the hug.

“Nothing for you to worry about.” Tracy stepped forward, smirking. Amber raised her eyebrows.

“Really? Fine then, but our talk isn’t over yet.” Amber finished, speaking more to Penny than any of them. Once Amber was gone, Tracy broke the silence that followed.

“Maybe what you need is a distraction.” She said, trying to comfort Penny.

“Hey, all this week starting tomorrow is the Summer Special! Maybe you’d want to go with us there!” Link suggested.

“I think that would be fun!” Penny spoke up.

“I’ll pick you ladies up at around noon.” Link said, looking down at his watch. “O, I better go or my mother will kill me if I’m late! Remember, noon!” he gave Tracy a peck on the cheek and ran off. Tracy put her arm around Penny’s shoulder and they slowly walked out to the now deserted parking lot.

“Don’t worry Penny, you’ll have fun tomorrow!” Tracy said as they walked to her house.

“You think?” Penny wasn’t sure how much fun it really would be.

“If it’s not, I promise that we’ll do something you’ll love!” Tracy replied, a huge smile on her face. Penny smiled as they walked inside Tracy’s house. They said a quick “hi” to Mrs. Turnblad and ran up to Tracy’s room. They both sat on the bed and stayed quiet.

“So, uh, why did you and Seaweed, you know?” Tracy asked.

“I don’t know. It happened too fast for me.” Penny replied.

“It will be all right.” Tracy said, hugging her friend again.

“I hope so.” Penny replied. Tracy smiled and broke the hug.

“So, do you want me to do your hair tomorrow?” Tracy asked, changing the subject.

“Sure.” Penny liked that idea.

“How do you want it?”

“Well, simple and not, you know, out there.” Penny replied.

“How about spiral curls with some spunk?” Tracy suggested.

“You’re the hairstylist, not me!” Penny said.

The rest of the day was the same, but with sadness.

Tracy had fallen asleep very fast, but Penny, no matter how much she tried, could not. Around midnight, she got up and sat in the chair beside the window, and “day” dreamed. She eventually fell asleep.

In the morning, Tracy woke up to see Penny sleeping in the chair. She went over and shook Penny up.

“Come on Penny, we’re going to be late.” Tracy was half-joking around, and trying to wake Penny up this way seemed to work. Penny yawned and got up. She got changed and sat down, waiting for Tracy. Tracy came out a few minutes later with all sorts of accessories. She sat them down and looked in her closet. She got out a beret and added it to the hair accessories.

“What’s that for?” Penny asked about the beret.

“O, I got that for Christmas one year and I’ve never worn it. I thought we could use it for you today.” Tracy replied. Penny asked no further questions and let Tracy work her magic.

It took over a good hour to finish Penny’s hair. Tracy added the beret and showed Penny.

“Ta-da!” Tracy said once Penny looked in the mirror. Penny smiled.

“Thank you.” She said, hugging Tracy. Tracy broke the hug and looked at her clock. It was 11:30.

“We better go down and wait for Link.” Penny suggested, noticing the time too. They gathered the things they needed and went downstairs.

“You girls better start today right with a good lunch!” Mrs. Turnblad yelled form the kitchen. Tracy and Penny walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table.

“O, Penny, you look fabulous!” Mrs. Turnblad complimented.

“Thank you Mrs. Turnblad.” Penny said, smiling at Tracy. They ate their delicious lunch, and quickly ran out when they heard a car. Link was leaning against his car waiting for them.

“You ladies ready to go?” he asked, a big smile on his face.

“Definitely!” Tracy exclaimed.

“Well, let’s rock n’ roll!” Link said. Tracy rolled her eyes at what he said as she and Penny got in. Link got in and they drove off. Tracy looked in the back seat and smiled at Penny. Penny smiled back.

The ride to the studio was silent. Link was afraid he’d say something wrong of stupid to Penny without realizing it, and Tracy didn’t want to bring up any subject.

When they arrived at the studio and went inside, Tracy found a chair for Penny to sit in. Penny watched the rehearsals very quietly. After rehearsals, there were refreshments for anyone in the studio. Penny was in the mood for a snack and her throat was dry. By the time she got the refreshment table, it was very crowded and someone, by accident, pushed Penny out. She bumped into none other than Corny Collins himself.

“You okay?” Penny expected this reaction from in. She expected it from any other person too.

“Um, yeah.” Penny replied, brushing her dress off.

“My God, is that you Penny?” Corny asked, not sure.

“Yes.” Apparently, Penny’s new hairstyle disguised her well.

“Wow, you look beautiful—I mean good!” Corny corrected himself, turning red at what he said.

“Thanks.” Penny said, not seeming to notice. Her voice was coated with sadness.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Corny had a very serious look on his face.

“Nothing.” Penny tried to smile at him, but she couldn’t.

“I’ve been in show biz for a long time, and I can tell when something’s wrong.” Corny said.

“Well, Seaweed and I kind of broke up.” Penny whispered, loud enough for only Corny to hear.

“You ‘kind of’ broke up?” he asked, trying to hide his smirk.

“Ok, we did. And it’s all my fault!” Penny buried her head in her hands and cried softly.

“Hey, look, it’s not your fault all right baby? I’ve got to go, but please try to lighten up?” Corny asked, rushing off. Penny wiped her tears and went to get some refreshments.

As she picked up a cookie, Penny realized something:

Corny Collins had just called her baby.

A/N: OO…Well, hope you like so far! I’m sorry that this chapter’s so short, but the next one is (in my own words) a lot longer. I’m currently working on another story that I will post once I get the third chapter started (I write my stories on paper before I type them). It is a new Hairspray story and it’s a new type of couple…but I’m not telling you:P:P

HUGS AND KISSES,
