Grown On Me.
“Look at this.”
Sara turned around to look at Nick. Or more precisely, the piece of paper he had just pulled out of the rubbish.
“That definitely looks like blood.” She confirmed, smiling at him. This was just what they needed to get their case going again.
Nick nodded.
“You up for visiting Greg?” he asked.
Sara stared blankly at him.
“Greg?” she asked, feeling that the name may have been mentioned before but absolutely certain that she had no idea who he was.
Nick’s eyes widened.
“You’ve never met Greg? The DNA tech?” he questioned incredulously.
“I don’t think so…” she replied, trying to think back to all the lab techs she had met. Had she even had a case that required her to go to DNA yet?
“Oh, you’d remember if you had met Greg, trust me.” Nick said, grinning, “Come on, we’ll go see him now.”
Sara shrugged. They had no leads, except this blood, so she definitely had the time on her hands. Besides, Nick seemed particularly excited about her meeting this particular tech.
The first thing she registered about the DNA lab was the loud music. The second was the… man? Boy? Teenager? Well, the younger man who was jumping and sliding about on one of those chairs that had wheels.
“Is he old enough to be working here?” she asked Nick, having to raise her voice for him to hear.
“Oh, he’s a bit older than he looks. Not by much though.”
Sara nodded as they walked through the door of the lab. The music was way too loud and heavy for her tastes.
“Greg. Greggo? Greg!” Nick shouted the last one, but the lab tech still didn’t hear him.
Nick approached the CD player and turned it off. Greg turned around and gave a small mock-scowl.
“Not cool Nick.” He said, turning back around to the samples he was processing. “I’ll be with you in a second.”
Nick glanced at Sara and gave her a small smirk. She looked at him, and then at the lab tech’s back, feeling slightly apprehensive. This… Greg… was clearly unlike anyone she had ever met before.
Ever.
Greg spun over in his chair to the table they were standing at. Nick grinned.
“You finally got that trick down then, G?” he asked the younger man. Greg laughed and spun around on his chair once more.
“It’s pretty cool, huh?” he replied, before turning to Sara. “Not that I have anything against anonymous pretty ladies just walking into my lab but… who are you? I haven’t seen you round here before.”
“Sara, this is Greg Sanders, our resident DNA lab rat. Greg, this is Sara…”
“…The new CSI.” Greg interrupted, smiling at Sara in a slightly… flirtatious way.
She had held out her hand before she had even thought about it, and Greg’s smile turned into what could only be described as a mischievous grin.
“Sorry,” he said, indicating his gloves, “Just been processing semen samples… but if you really want some, I’d happily donate a few of my own.”
Sara stared at him, completely shocked. She had only met this guy, what, 5 minutes ago? If that. Nick gave a spluttered laugh, turned to look at her and burst out laughing again.
“Greg flirts with anything and anyone.” he explained, shooting Greg a look that seemed to say he had crossed a line for a first meeting. “I probably should’ve warned you.”
Greg seemed unrepentant.
“So, what you got for me?” he asked.
“Blood on some paper pulled from the victim’s trash.” Nick explained as Sara handed Greg the evidence bag with the bloodied paper on it, being careful not to touch the dreaded gloves.
“Greg, have you got my results?” Grissom’s voice broke through their conversation, all business.
“Indeed I do.” Greg replied, doing that spinny-slidey thing on the chair to get to the other side of the lab.
Grissom frowned and Sara exchanged an amused glance with Nick.
“Greg, if you break that chair it’s coming out of your wages.”
Greg gave a snort of laughter, his back still turned.
“The chair won’t break.” There was a pause, and then Greg spoke again. “You know, I once considered taking this chair home with me.”
Out of the corner of her eye Sara could see Grissom give a small sigh, while Nick rolled his eyes. Greg continued talking with his back to them, looking for the results.
“But then I realised that if I took it home, I’d have nothing to keep me occupied on slow days here. Except tormenting the other lab rats, of course, which seems to always lead them to conspire against me and steal my coffee. So I decided that it was probably for the best that I didn’t take the chair home. Plus, I have a feeling that would be seen as stealing from the lab, and could get me fired. The blood found on the knife was the vic’s, and I couldn’t get a match on the semen.”
He spun his chair back over to them and handed the results to Grissom. Sara couldn’t do anything except stare. It was not so much the rate at which he had suddenly changed tack but the complete randomness of the story. Had there even been a point to it? Grissom turned and walked out of the lab in silence.
“We should probably go back.” Nick suggested, stepping away from the table. “See ya G.”
Greg raised a hand as he got back to work.
“Bye Nick… Sara…”
Sara walked out still reeling from meeting Greg. She could not, for the life of her, make head or tail of the young DNA tech.
“So, what d’you think of Greg then?” Nick asked, laughter in his eyes.
“I’m… I don’t know.” She replied, really unsure as to what she thought of him. That he was clearly insane was the only thing that came to mind.
Nick nodded.
“Don’t worry. He’ll grow on you.”
And she had never realised it. Even when she had thought she was giving her heart to Grissom she hadn’t realised.
Until now.
And now… seemed far too late. For her and for him.
