Oh, I Remember!

Chapter 2- Five Years is a Long Time

“So… All you remember about me is my name?” Kim asked. They were fifteen minutes out of Middleton and Kim was trying to pump as much information from Ron, particularly about relationships.

“Yup, Kim. Rufus’ and your name. That’s it,” Ron answered. He shifted uncomfortably on the metal bench. This is worse than getting interrogated behind enemy lines! He was sweating inside his helmet, his visor was fogging up.

“Are you sure? What about events during high school?” Kim inquired. Now she knew what Ron felt like during her memory-loss period in her senior year. Come on, Ron! You have to remember!

“Nope, I don’t think anything important happened during my high school years,” Ron replied. A pained expression formed on Kim’s face. Rufus stood on her shoulder with his arms in the form of an ‘X,’ shaking his head vigorously. Oh crap. Why am I so clueless about women?! “Uh… Did I say something wrong?” Bad self, bad self!

I’m not hurt. I’m okay. Ron just doesn’t remember. Gulp

“No, I’m okay,” Kim lied, choking back tears. She hoped he could see past her fake cover up, but he just nodded and cleaned his visor. Sigh… He’s still as inexperienced with women as ever. Why was I cursed with such a DENSE boyfriend!

Phew! I’m safe, Ron told himself, nice save Stoppable. On the contrary, a small voice locked behind ten meters of concrete in a sound proof room was yelling at the top of its lung’s, “You idiot! Can’t you tell she’s upset! This is what you get for trapping me in this room AT BIRTH!”

“Okay, back on topic. Do you have any idea why the US would keep your identity secret?” Kim asked.

“I think I can answer that,” Wade said interrupting. His holographic floating head appeared over her titanium watch, at the same time Wade also appeared in the Heads Up Display of the helmet Ron was wearing.

“Wade? I think the titanium watch thing is way cooler than this visor, so I’ll talk to you from there,” Ron said with his lower jaw hanging limply. The African-American teen beamed at him. He was just told that his device was more attractive than the US armed forces’ new inter-personal communications system, and what inventor didn’t like compliments− especially if it meant outmaneuvering the “most advanced” army’s tech guys. The SEAL moved closer to Kim to get a better view, unknowingly causing Kim to blush.

“I was just beeping in when I heard Kim’s question,” Wade happily said. “I checked Ron’s records in the aftermath of Gemini’s conquer the world plot. They were hard to find, almost like looking for a shadow in a pitch black room, but I found them. His records are filled with letters of recommendation, letters of acceptance from the Delta Force, Army Special Forces, and the Navy. Of course, the latter fought the hardest, which is why you’re a SEAL.” Kim and Ron nodded to show that they understood.

“I didn’t know they wanted me that much!” Ron said, surprised. He just did what they told him to do, nothing more.

“Get this, Ron’s results are off the charts! He was faster than anybody in his company!” Wade said as his face morphed into Ron’s training results.

Kim scoffed, “That’s easy to explain. He WAS the star running back during our senior year.”

Ron blinked and thought, Star running back? Whoa! I thought I was a loser in high school?

“Accuracy is close to perfect and his reflexes in the simulated battle exercise were extremely fast. That’s just due to video games.”

Okay, Ron thought, now we’re back to me being a loser again. When will this roller coaster end?!

“It’s during combat that Ron shocks me,” Wade said as he looked at Ron. “Kim, do you know how Ron always loses his pants?”

That’s two points for Ron the Loser, one for Ron the Not-so Loser.

Kim replied, “Yeah. Why?”

“Well, during combat,” Wade began, “he turns into an elite ‘killing machine.’ He performs flawless moves that he used to fail at all the time.”

“My team mates said that whenever I was under great amounts of stress, my eyes would turn a freaky blue color,” Ron said. “They call it “Surrender or Die” mode. I don’t believe them, but I do loose all feelings of tiredness and I become more focused. Then, when everything’s done, I just return to normal.”

Mystical Monkey Power, Kim thought. That explains it. Apparently, it also increases other skills for a short amount of time, not just hand-to-hand fighting. Kim looked at the letters of recommendation again. No past, no identity…the perfect assassin!

The results transformed into Wade’s floating head and he looked at Kim and nodded. He understood what she was thinking. Ron now knew why he was always sent into high-risk operations. They were operations that had low survival ratings, but he managed to pull all of his team mates out of them alive.

“So I’m a secret weapon in the War on Terror,” Ron said with a gasp. This is one of those times when my obliviousness to everything around me betrays me. They had to keep his identity secret for a reason: to instill fear into their enemies. An unknown enemy is the worst type of enemy one could have. He was lucky he was still being treated as a human and rewarded R&R! All of this info makes my head hurt! Must sleep.

“We’re a long way from home, and I’m kind of tired. Can we continue this later?” Ron asked sleepily.

“Wade, you still rock! See you later.” Kim deactivated her watch, returning it to normal.

“In case you want to sleep too, I’ll wake you up when we get there,” Ron blurted out. Ron moved to the other side of the aircraft and plopped down. He lay back against the metal fuselage and drifted off to sleep.

Kim expected to do some cuddling with Ron when she noticed he was on the other side of the hovercraft. A scowl appeared on her face as she slammed her fist on the bench. Dang it! He still doesn’t remember! I should just go over there and…and… Whoa, get a grip there, Possible. Just calm down. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to drift towards the darkness.

The ramp at the rear of the craft dropped, revealing a friendly, colorful neighborhood by the name of Middleton. The settlement, although quite simple, looked breath-taking. Probably one of the cleanest neighborhoods in the Mid-West, the people had a knack for making normal look dazzling. All in all nothing much changed, except for the fact that Middleton was now a major city in the US thanks to her father. Her dad’s space center had doubled in size and had now been accepted as a second government space agency. Her mom was still a brain surgeon, but was now recognized all over the world.

The jet black hovercraft that the heroes were riding on flashed in the mid-day sun. Although a spectacular sight, citizens on the street paid no attention to the hovercraft. After all, Middleton was the head quarters of THE Kim Possible. They had seen vehicles from the present GJ hover craft, to a Blackhawk helicopter the week she helped a general disable Drakken’s mind-swapping machine, and from rocket-powered mopeds on the day the Lil’ Diablos attacked, to a certain tank that Mr. Stoppable had won. Even Kim’s upgraded purple and black Sloth SL Coup was a sight to behold.

Kim stood at the entrance, and looked out. Wind from the hovercraft’s engines caused her purple jacket to flap noisily. She had missed the fresh suburban air of Middleton and took a deep breath. Home, sweet home. This particular suburb held most of her childhood and memories, and most of them were with Ron and he didn’t remember anything. She had hoped on the island that being in his home city would help him remember his past. When she looked over at Ron, he was deep in thought.

Why can’t I get rid of the feeling that I’ve been here before? Ron was in conflict with himself. The logical part of his mind was telling him that he had never been to this place, but his subconscious was telling him otherwise. The only recognizable structure was the lone Bueno Nacho eatery in the area. (Rivaling the fast food chain Maku Downald’s in international sales, Bueno Nacho was a sight visible world-wide.) Yet, he felt connected to the peaceful city. He felt that he could travel to any location in the area without needing a map. Nothing seemed to click in his memory, until they flew over a Pre-School.

Ron stood up and whispered, “I know that place.” He walked over to the open rear of the hovercraft and rubbed his eyes to verify the landmark. Convinced, he connected to the pilot’s radio.

“Pilot, stop the hovercraft,” Ron whispered into his microphone. The pilot nodded and the hovercraft landed in the parking lot. Ron gave him a quick “Thanks” and cut the audio connection. He took off his helmet and placed it gently on the bench. He stepped down from the vehicle and proceeded towards the playground in the back of the school.

Kim watched him walk and asked the pilot, “Do you know where he’s going?”

“Nah’ miss, He just told me tah stop movin’. Sorry I cain’t give ya more help,” the heavy-accented pilot said.

“No problem. Just wait here,” Kim said. She hopped down and walked after Ron. What could he be up to? She increased her pace and entered the playground. The chain-link fence surrounding the outdoor playground rattled in the wind. She was standing to the left of the building, and she only had to turn the corner to see the playground she hadn’t seen since she was four. Then she stopped just as her foot reached the end of the short path. Wait… We first met in Pre-K. Does he…remember? She peeked past the corner and saw Ron standing underneath a tree; the same tree that both of them had stood under on the first day of school. He was holding a ball in his hand.

A phrase repeated in Ron’s head over and over. “Your weird! But I like you.Where was this coming from? He bounced the ball against a root of the tree and caught it again. Why do I remember this place? He looked straight ahead, hoping to discern the answer from the tree. It was at that moment when it hit him. In front of his nose was an inscription on the tree. He inched his face closer to the trunk to get a closer look. What he saw caused him to drop the ball he was holding. It bounced and rolled over to Kim. She picked it up and started walking towards Ron.

Ron whispered the inscription on the tree to himself, “KP and RS. Frends 4 Evur.” At the same time Kim approached him and placed her hand on his shoulder. He turned around and his eyes went wide when he recognized who was standing in front of him. Suddenly, he was jerked to the past as a memory played itself out.

He was standing underneath the tree by himself. Not because he was sad, but because he hadn’t met anybody knew. He was just about to go inside when a red-haired girl walked up to him.

“Hi there! My name’s Kim. What’s yours?” she asked in a cheerful voice.

“R-R-Ron,” he stuttered. “I was just talking to my invisible buddy, Rufus. Can you see him? He’s about as tall as the tree.” He pointed at the tree next to him.

Kim giggled, “You’re weird! But I like you! Come on! Let’s play on the swing!” She pulled him by the arm and seemingly hauled him back to reality.

“Ron?” Kim asked worriedly. “Are you okay?”

Ron flashed his trademark grin and hugged Kim tightly. “KP!” he exclaimed with joy.

He just… called me KP. Is he back? Kim asked, “Is the Ron Stoppable back?”

“Boo-yah! Of course the Ron-man's back! Only Ron is allowed to use his bon-diggity trademark! Sorry about leaving you KP. It wasn’t my fault, unless you spot me ten points and…”

Ron was silenced by Kim giving him an equally powerful squeeze. “You are back!”

“Good to be back, KP! Now, let’s go home and introduce myself… Again. Boy five years is a LONG time.”

The two friends (NOTE! Friends) walked back to the plane. The Ron-man was back in town.!
