Summary: After an accident in the science lab, Gabriella is shocked when she sees that she's invisible. Now her mom thinks she's gone missing and her world is falling apart. Gabriella will need her friends' support, but will she ever be visible to everyone again?
A/N: This is a story that I thought that I'd try and see how long it could go on for. Invisibility is something to deal with, so Gabriella will deal with it. This also happens straight after High School Musical 2, where the gang are back at East High. Please read and review!
Chapter One
Gabriella’s Explosive Experiment
It was senior year – and the first day back at East High for the Wildcats. After shifting their differences aside after the summer they had together, Troy, Gabriella, Chad, Taylor, Sharpay, Zeke, Ryan, Martha, Jason and Kelsi were walking down the hallways like one happy group of friends. Despite the strange looks and disgust that they received, they were all generally very happy to be back in school – but it was something Chad couldn’t stand.
“Why on earth would you be happy to get to school again?” he moaned, as he watched Sharpay and Ryan get their books out of their lockers. “It’s high school, guys. It’s … Darbus time and … gee, I don’t want to get into that whole load of drama.”
“We’re in senior year now, Chad,” smiled Sharpay, as she slammed her locker shut.
“Yeah, that means we don’t care who thinks what about us,” assumed Ryan, who straightened his hat. “Isn’t it better that we’re all friends this way? Besides, I think that our chemistry teacher expected an essay about us, anyway. Try to avoid her face when we go to chemistry, will you?”
“Homework? Don’t even wanna think about it,” sighed Taylor.
“And here I was thinking you had it covered,” assumed Gabriella, who was crossing her arms with Troy holding her waist. “What have you been doing since we left Lava Springs, Tay?”
“Uh, well, nothing!” she quickly said. “Chad, let’s go to homeroom!” Without a word, she grabbed Chad’s hand and ran off to homeroom.
“That was weird,” said Troy, raising an eyebrow, as he watched Jason and Kelsi scurry off to homeroom together. “Chad never liked Taylor bossing him around. I guess something’s been going on with them, too, huh?” When Gabriella just stood there and smiled, he kissed her on the cheek. “We’ll get through senior year, Gab. You’re going to have to help me in class this year. I barely managed chemistry last year.”
“I’ll help you, don’t worry,” smiled Gabriella, as Martha followed Sharpay and Ryan towards homeroom. “Come on, we better hurry to homeroom or else Darbus will have us in detention for punctuality.”
“What is that?” he asked.
“Attendance? Come on, let’s go!” she said, grabbing his hand and they ran off to homeroom.
So homeroom didn’t go as well as expected. Darbus was going on at them yet again making sure they had studied well over summer and making sure to check that there were no cell phones ringing in the classroom. Being one of East High’s strictest teachers, it wasn’t good for the students. Even Sharpay and Ryan often had trouble dwindling with her head when it came to the musicals.
“Dude, this is so boring,” said Troy.
“Dude, you’re listening again?” asked Chad.
“Any questions?” said Darbus. “Yes, Jason?”
Everyone turned to Jason looking annoyed at what question he would ask now.
“So, Miss Darbus, is the chemistry department ready to be opened?”
And as usual, everyone just moaned.
“Yes, it is,” nodded Darbus. “Now I would advise you all to be very careful when up there and –”
The class was relieved when the bell saved them. Everyone grabbed their books and hurried out of the homeroom.
“So what are your plans for today?” asked Troy, as he looked at the new timetable he was given earlier. Gabriella was also looking at hers. “Do you have history class now?”
“Sorry, got a free study period,” sighed Gabriella, looking up at him and shrugging her shoulders. “I dunno what I’m gonna do. First thing on a Monday all on my own, huh? No one has a free right now. But I can always catch you later at math class.”
“Sure, no problem,” smiled Troy, putting his timetable away. “Wish you were there in history today. Man, at least Taylor can try keep me awake.” He kissed her on the cheek and continued to smile at her. “I’ll see you later, Gabriella.” And with that, he walked around the corner and was gone.
Gabriella wasn’t alone, but then Jason’s question from earlier cropped up in her mind.
The chemistry department’s been revamped, right? So I could go have a look, she thought, and smiled to herself. I always wanted to try out this experiment, but I never had the time to do so. She pulled out a piece of paper from her jeans pocket. This is going to be one heck of a free period!
Gabriella found herself in the very same room that Sharpay had questioned her about Troy many months ago. Except this time, it had been redesigned. But when she got there, she found that it looked like it wasn’t even ready for anyone to go inside. Nonetheless, she still went inside and found whatever she needed for her experiment. After putting on her goggles, she was ready to start it.
I hope nothing bad happens, she thought, and sighed when she started adding chemicals into her beaker. Hmm, this is going the way I wanted it. At that point, she started getting excited. What if this experiment leads me to something I’ve discovered? I could be like Einstein or … ok, I’m seriously getting carried away right now.
Half an hour later, Gabriella was looking for one vital ingredient to her mixture. The beaker was bubbling now and was almost as good as the one she had created to get her out of the Scholastic Decathlon … for the musical callback she had with Troy a few months ago.
“Where is it?” she muttered, praying and hoping that there wouldn’t be any teachers lurking around this area of the school. “Where’s the natron that I need?” She was looking all around the cupboards and couldn’t find anything so far. If she couldn’t find it in the next few minutes, then her experiment would cease to exist probably. “Found it!” She smiled as she found the bottle and poured a little into the beaker. But then she tripped forward on a brick lying on the ground and a lot went into the beaker. “OH NO! What have I done?”
She backed away from the beaker, which looked like it was going to explode. There was fear in her eyes. Her goggles slipped from her eyes and she bent down to pick them up. But even before she could protect her eyes, the beaker had exploded. It exploded right all around the room and ruined the redesign that had gone on during the summer.
When Gabriella finally opened her eyes, she was happy to know her eyes weren’t burning. But then she looked down to the floor. There was a small puddle … but no reflection. Panic struck her. She looked at her hands – nothing. She looked at her legs, but nothing again. She stood up this time and looked up and down at herself. But nothing again!
What was going on? Had Gabriella achieved something that had been assumed to be virtually impossible?
“I’m invisible!” she whispered in fear rather than excitement.
