She nodded at James and then closed the door and I heard a lock turn. We were in a locked room with James, who was grinning manically.

This was not good.

James stepped closer to me and I back up. He took another step and I took another step back but I felt the wall. He grinned again but then looked at Jacob as if deciding whom he should kill first. I wondered if he was capable of speech.

I think he decided he should kill me first because he took another step toward me but there was a commotion outside the door. We both looked at it but then nothing. Nothing happened. He shook his head, looked back at me and then pulled a knife out from his boot.

My mind whirled. I was facing death and all I could think about was how he walked around with a good 12-inch knife in his boots. I mean… didn’t he stab himself? Frequently?

He lovingly caressed the edge of the knife, checking to see if it was sharp. He looked satisfied. Apparently it was. I gulped.

He raised it and I closed my eyes, waiting for the knife to tear my flesh.

But it never came.

Instead, the door flew open and I opened my eyes a crack. Something flew towards James head. It didn’t seem to affect him. Actually, I don’t think he noticed at all. But he did hear the yell that came from the doorway.

My eyes were fully open now. Standing in the doorway, looking a little worse for wear was Rafe. He looked okay but there were red stains all over his shirt.

James seemed to realize he was outnumbered 3 to 1 but that didn’t deter him that much. He went for me again but then there was a flurry of moment and I felt myself being pulled away. It was Rafe who held my arm. James ended up hitting the wall with his knife and he struggled to get it out again. I took this moment to whisper:

“Where the hell were you?”

“All over. Making a plan”

“What do you plan to do now?”

He looked at me and I could’ve sworn there was a small smile on his face.

“I can’t say I’ve gotten to that part yet.”

James, after having successfully pulling the knife out of the wall started towards us again.

“He really isn’t that smart is he?” Rafe whispered.

“I’d be lying if I said he was.”

“Always the witty one, even in the face of death.”

I almost grinned. I think I was hysterical.

Rafe crouched down into a crouch, baring his teeth back into a snarl. His eyes glowed like great big copper coins and he tensed. His limbs lengthened, as did his hair. In a matter of seconds a great beats stood before me, it’s teeth bared, snarling. Pure sinew covered its entire body.

James seemed shocked by this and stopped, unsure of what to do. It finally dawned on me that if he was a Loup-Garou, he would have changed by now. But he hadn’t. So he wasn’t one.

I glanced at Jacob. He seemed okay for the time being, just a little shaken.

The wolf crouched and then sprang, attacking James’ throat. They both fell to the floor. It’s jaws snapped and I hear a horrible crunching noise, followed by an ever more terrible tearing. Little flecks of blood flew in the air.

I tackled Jacob, covering his eyes to make sure he didn’t see anything. Sure he probably would see this and more in the coming years, but he was 4. I don’t think he knew was Loup-Garou was yet. That was good. He could have a few years of childish innocence.

I buried my face in his hair, trying to drown out the noise. I knew this was a good sound, that James was probably dead but it was still not the most pleasant thing to hear.

Finally it stopped and I looked up. Rafe stood by the body, already human again and pulling on a pair of pants. His shirt lay in tattered ruins a few feet away.

I did not want to see that body. I tried to concentrate on something else. Jacob was shaking in my arms and I leaned down to soothe him. He was crying. I gently dried his tears on the parts of my shirt that weren’t wet from the paint that had been on the floor.

Rafe looked at me and then at my shirt. His eyes widened in alarm.

“Are you hurt?”

“No. They wanted to scare me by putting red paint all over the floor. I have to say it worked.”

He seemed relieved.

“Good, good.”

“Any other kids here?” I asked.

“No they all morphed before anyone was caught.” He looked at me. “They’re first priority was capturing us.”

“Ah.” I looked down at my shoes. They were really dirty. “Can we leave now?”

“Yes. That would be good.”

He picked up Jacob and we cautiously left the room. There was no one in the hall. We walked down it, but still no one was there.

“Where are they?” I whispered.

“No idea,” he whispered back.

“Right behind you,” said a voice from behind us.

We slowly turned, our eyes wide with fear and there behind us was 20 or so half morphed Loup-Garou.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Blood and Chocolate (that would be so cool if did) so nothing is mine except for the plot… and Scarlet… and Gemma… and the twins… w/e
