Consider this my interpretation as to what would happen if Son Goku had a daughter. Yes, this concept is often poorly written and overused; we've all seen it. However, the only thing that pops into my mind when I see that is, "Challenge accepted!"

This is my biggest work and has been going for over three years. A lot of planning and preparation went into it; character charts, translations, copious reading of the manga and watching of videos, not to mention (literally) hours of research.

I feel satisfied that you won't find it the typically boring 'Goku's Mary Sue daughter' or 'Gohan/Goten's twin' type of story, though of course I cannot presume to know the individual readers' taste.

All names of characters and sometimes places used in this story are taken from the Viz-translated manga, which is generally considered to be the most accurate translation. Here and there you will find my own walk-on characters with their own name (puns) - consider it my personal tribute to Toriyama.

This story goes under revision regularly to make sure it's up to date, the writing is improved, and the names are correct. This is version 5 - quotes added, notes removed, spelling & grammar errors corrected, and two new chapters.

I hope you enjoy my story. If you do (or even if you don't) please feel free to leave a review. Constructive criticism is welcome, but flaming is not and will be promptly removed. I don't mind you giving some advice on where to improve, but saying my story is a piece of crap or similar is a waste of your time and mine. Chapter 1 - New Life

"The longest journey is the journey inward."

-Dag Hammarskjold

January 1st, 762 A.D.

The young woman paced up and down the length of the hospital room. Her gown was wrinkled as her forehead, giving away some of the worry that lay beneath a seemingly calm exterior. The room however was cheery and bright, designed to provide comfort for women in this difficult time.

She was not comforted.

"You have to relax," scolded a deep voice. The woman's father sat awkwardly on a chair too spindly for his bulky frame. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and followed her frantic movements with his eyes.

"Relax?" the woman snapped, turning around with difficulty. "Relax? How am I supposed to relax when a baby the size of an aircar is trying to -"

An answering stab of pain in her abdomen caused her to bend over, crying out. Her father took her arm and guided her to the bed.

"Relax," he repeated. "You're not doing yourself or the baby any favours."

"Mrs Son?"

A young doctor walked into the room, carrying a clipboard. His sharp eyes noted the man and the young woman on the bed, her face drawn and pale. He was wearing a crisp white coat with a name badge pinned to it - Doctor Hakase.

"How do you feel?" he asked her kindly.

"Like I'm giving birth to a dinosaur," she grumbled.

"Ah." Dr Hakase missed the joke. "Let's take a look, shall we? Please lie down."

The doctor hung his clipboard on the end of the bed and pulled on a pair of gloves.

"You're fully dilated," he said after a few minutes. "I expect that baby will be arriving very soon. I'll call a midwife for you."

After Dr Hakase left, Son Chi-Chi lay back on the pillows and sighed. It was not meant to be like this. Goku was supposed to be here, holding her hand and sharing in the excitement of a new baby together. Even Gohan should have been here, but he was off in the wilderness being abused by some horrible green monster. And Goku was...he was...

Pain tore through Chi-Chi's stomach and she gritted her teeth. The contractions were getting worse. Soon the baby would be born and she'd be left to raise it. Him. It was a boy, she just knew it. She sighed again. At least she would have more of a say in raising her second child. He would study, like his big brother Gohan, and they would become great scholars and make her proud. Kuririn had said that Goku could be wished back to life with the Dragon Balls in one year. At least then her new son would have a father.

Goku was a great father - when he was here.

A fat, bustling nurse opened the door and stuck her head inside.

"Mrs Son?" she said. "I'm your midwife."

Chi-Chi cried out as another contraction arrived. She took long deep breaths, fought the pain and gave the nurse a weak smile.

The nurse's name badge read 'Nurse Suimono'. She pulled on another pair of gloves and examined Chi-Chi.

"It won't be long now, dear," she said. "Would you like some water?"

"Yes, please."

Chi-Chi gulped down the water, nearly choking as another contraction tore through her. There was a horrible shrieking sound as her father pulled his chair across the linoleum floor to her bedside.

"I'll stay here," Gyumao said. Her hand was lost in his massive fingers.

Time passed; Chi-Chi was by now far too distracted by the pain to tell just how long, but it seemed like an eternity. Finally at midday Son Chi-Chi and Son Goku's second child was born, kicking and screaming its way into the world just like Gohan had four and a half years before.

Chi-Chi collapsed back on her pillows, completely exhausted. I did it! she thought. At least I won't feel like an elephant anymore!

She wiped sweat off her face and watched the back of the nurse as she bathed the new baby, who was still squawking.

"Mrs Son, your baby has a…well, it's quite unusual."

Chi-Chi looked over at the doctor, who looked perplexed. He was examining the clipboard as he spoke.

"A what?" she said, frowning. Her chest tightened in a sudden panic. "What's wrong?"

"Well, it's a tail," he replied, puzzled.

"Oh."

Chi-Chi gave a small chuckle. Son Goku's child, indeed.

"It's a family oddity," she explained. "My husband and other son were both born the same."

"I see," Dr Hakase replied, though he clearly didn't. "Well, uh, if it's normal in the family..."

"Your baby is almost ready," the nurse trilled. "And she is beautiful, Mrs Son."

Chi-Chi nodded absently. Then a second later, what the nurse had said repeated itself in her mind.

"Did you say...?"

Nurse Suimono turned around, cradling a baby swaddled in a pink blanket. "A wonderful daughter," she said, smiling.

"What?" Gyumao murmured. "Chi-Chi, I thought you said you were having a boy!"

"I thought so too," Chi-Chi said, puzzled. She took the baby from the nurse. The hospital staff left the room soon after, and silence fell.

Chi-Chi studied the baby lying peacefully in her arms. She looked almost exactly like Gohan when he was a newborn. I expect that will change, she thought wryly.

A girl. She had always wanted a daughter. She loved Gohan dearly of course, but here was someone to share with who would understand - at least, when she grew up.

And at least she won't be obsessed with fighting like her silly father, Chi-Chi thought fondly. But now she had a little girl, she wasn't quite sure what to call her. They had been expecting a boy.

"Well," Chi-Chi said lightly, "she doesn't look much like a 'Goten.'"

Her father laughed and gently brushed a lock of dark hair off the baby's reddish face. The newborn had fallen asleep, exhausted from the birth. Chi-Chi felt like sleeping too, but first she wanted to name the child.

What would Goku name her? she thought.

Briefly, Chi-Chi flashed back to when Gohan had been an infant. It had taken them days to name him before Gyumao suggested they name him after Gokuu's late grandfather. She swallowed the lump that rose in her throat and sighed.

"Well, Dad?" she said. "Do you have any ideas?"

Gyumao stroked the baby's hair for a moment, his massive hand almost twice the size of her head. The infant stirred slightly, but didn't wake.

"What about Chiyo?" he said thoughtfully.

Chi-Chi glanced at him in surprise. "Mama's name?"

"Why not?" Gyumao replied, grinning. "You named Gohan after Goku's grandfather, didn't you? It would be appropriate."

He's right, Chi-Chi thought. Her mother's name had been Chiyo, but Chi-Chi had never known her; she had died giving birth to her only daughter.

"Chiyo," Chi-Chi murmured, fishing the infant's tiny hand from the blankets. "Son Chiyo. Welcome to the family."

Little Chiyo's fingers latched onto her mother's thumb. She was just a few minutes old, but the grip was like iron. Chi-Chi laughed. "You are definitely Son Goku's child."
