Kate stared out, frightened at the thought of losing either of her parents.
"This is my fault," she whispered, "my parents are going to die and it's all my fault." The little girl fell into a corner. "NO. I will not stay here and cry. I should fight, I have to fight. Even if I die, it will be better than my parents dying." Slowly she lifted her little body to her feet, preparing an amazing plan. All too quickly, she heard a knock on the door and fell right back down.
"Please, Miss, they're after me, please let me in!" Kate was puzzled, but she had never been one to say no to anyone when it was a matter of safety. Still...
"Who's following you?" She whispered, not wanting the witch to hear her talking to the little boy (and by the voice it was a little boy) and to hurt him.
"The hunters. They shot down my family, the gypsy tribe, and I fear they're after me. Please!" Kate was convinced, she opened the door and rushed him in. To her surprise, he was almost exactly her age. A young boy, he was smiling rather sweetly. But something didn't seem right.
"You don't look like a gypsy." Kate blurted, then wished she hadn't. "If you don't mind me saying so." She quickly added. The boy grimaced.
"I'm not entirely. My father was a gypsy, my mother was not. Anyway, what's it to you?" Kate shuddered back, her mind quickly turning to the witch and how her parents were probably out dying for her right now. The boy sighed. "Are those your parents and the great Swamp Witch out there? I could have sworn she was dead. Well, no matter, I suppose she found her old methods again." Kate's eyes snapped at him.
"What old methods?" She asked, realizing she sounded murderous. The boy inched away in slight terror.
"Why her mirrors! She goes through them every time, through every single one. Once she does, she is forced to take a bite of a poisonous apple, and as long as she kills enough people and drains out their power, she may go back to her mirror. But if she does not, well then, she remains dead, truly dead. No one can come to visit her, her spirit is taken to the underground, stuff like that."
"Wait, but can she ever come back to life?" Kate whispered.
"No. This is as alive as she gets." Kate nodded, slowly piecing something together.
"So that's why she wanted me. To be her heir, in a way, like my grandmother was. If only I was strong enough to fight her!" Kate sobbed. The boy tilted his head slowly.
"Oh, but I'm sure you are!"
"I'm not!" The boy sighed.
"Who are you anyway?' He asked, seemingly annoyed at her weeping.
"I'm Kate Lewis." This was the first time anyone in the kingdoms had not known her simply by face. It struck her.
"Oh. Oh dear, I'm so sorry, I--" He began to bow.
"Stop it! My parents are out there, getting stinking killed! I have no time for formalities! Now, who are you? I don't know why I care, but I do." The boy beamed.
"I'm--" Just then a scream rang, which sounded bitterly like Kate's mother. "Look, who I am doesn't matter all that much, now does it? I'm going to fight that witch."
"Are you insane? Stupid gypsy boy, you'll get killed, weren't you running from danger?" He snapped back at her.
"I was. I am no longer. Good bye, Kate Lewis, may you remember me well." As he left the carriage, Kate noticed his eyes flash yellow.
--
"Virginia!" Wolf screamed as his wife was plunged with blue sparks. The witch cackled and let Virginia go, gasping in pain.
"I'll let her go, I swear it. But first, you must give your daughter to be the heir. Quick, your choice, Wolf. The kingdoms...or your wife. I won't hurt the little girl." She assured. Wolf was at a weak point, and was completely unprepared for the answer about to fly out of his mouth.
"You may have K--" His voice drifted off, and then a boy appeared.
"You won't touch another hair on the Lewis family's head!" The child cried. Wolf seemed surprised, but saw something in this boy which he knew, something so strangely familiar it hurt, deeply. "I shall fight you!" He pulled out a sword, which no one had noticed he had. He inched near Wolf and gasping Virginia.
"I know you!" Wolf whispered.
"No, you know my father. The young half wolf half gypsy who died? My mother wasn't a gypsy, she fled with me to another gypsy camp though."
"So you're a wolf and gypsy like your father?" Wolf asked.
"What I am doesn't matter, allow me to fight!" How was Wolf to refuse that? He let the boy go. The boy stood there, doing nothing for a moment, darkness, night was falling over them.
"Aren't you going to fight boy?"
"yes."
"You amuse me, you're so ignorant!" the witch cackled.
"Do I now? Well that's rather surprising, seeing as how I know your weakness." The witch's face fell. "Midnight." With one look at the round moon, the boy stuck his sword through the witch's arm. She fell to the ground. "I am no murderer. But it's people like you, the ones with all the power that prey on those with none, that annoy me. So welcome to the dark side, I suppose." Closing his eyes, he stabbed her right in the heart. With one blood curling scream, she evaporated.
--
Kate ran out of the carriage and to her mother's side.
"Mommy!" She whispered. Slowly Virginia felt a jolt inside of her and her pain was no more.
"Kate, darling." The family hugged. Kate saw the gypsy boy in the distance walk away.
"Wait, you! Gypsy!" He turned mid away, his face looking as if he was caught in a deadly act.
"I was just..." Kate ran over an hugged him.
"Thanks. You saved my family! Now tell me your name!" The boy smiled.
"I'm Jonathon Warren Wolfstock."
"Wolfstock?"
"I'm sure you've noticed that I'm part wolf. Wolfstock is a popular name for a wolf."
"Is not."
"Is too."
"Is not."
"Is too!" Kate laughed.
"So what should I call you?" He smiled.
"Call me... Jonathon, I guess." She beamed as she ran back to her parents' side. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Red awakening, and Wendell and Tony coming out of their carriage.
"Guys, this is Jonathon, can he stay with us until we find him some part of his family?"
"Yes." Wendell said. "He can stay."

The end.
