Dear Father, I’ve Runaway with the Boy I Love

Just because you love someone doesn't mean you have to be involved with them. Love is not a bandage to cover wounds.

Chapter 1

The domino streets buzzed. People lined the side walks and cars blocked the streets. It was a cloudy day, rain doomed to fall. Of course, it was April so it was often common for rain to come once or twice a week. The sky darkened into a haze of grey, rain breaking and showering the people. An even gloomier mood drifted through the town. People hurried under shelter as lightning cracked and thunder boomed. The rain fell even harder against the windowsill of one girl’s room. She was staring outside her bedroom window, sighing.

Domino city was her new home, but it felt more like a jail. She had no freedom, no ability to state her opinions. It was just the way she was raised. And to have moved from where her few friends were, was horrible. She hadn’t wanted to say goodbye to everyone and everything she loved, but she had no choice. Business was business and she couldn’t do anything about a transfer, even if she wished she could.

Her name was Katherine Elizabeth Beckman. Her family had just moved to Japan from Great Britain. It was such a tiring trip that she had not wanted to endure. It was all because Katherine’s father was relocated since he worked for Kaiba Corporations. Katherine hated how he worked for a seventeen year old high school boy. It made no sense and it gave Katherine an uncomfortable feeling. She had met Seto Kaiba once, but he muttered ‘hello’ and walked right past her into a meeting. Seto didn’t seem like a very nice guy and Katherine wanted to avoid anymore meetings with him…

“Katherine?”

There came a knock from her bedroom door. She drew her attention to the dark wood with the golden knob. She heaved a sigh and answered as nicely as she could.

“What is it, father?”

She knew it was him. His deep voice stuck out too much.

“Are you ready for school?”

Her father opened the door and stepped in. Katherine merely nodded. She slipped into a pair of navy Converses and laced them up. She grabbed her bag, slung it over her shoulder and stumbled out of her room. Her father walked behind her, brimming delightfully. He always acted like this when she was going into her first day of school. His graying blonde hair was slicked back and his light blue eyes were lit up in cheerfulness. Katherine hated going to a new school, especially where she knew no one.

“Katherine, I want you to do well in school and make friends. Whatever you do, stay out of trouble…”

Katherine decided to block out the rest of what her father was saying. He went over the same thing every time she attended a new school. She did every one of his commands, except make friends. That was never easy for her. She was too shy to talk to people and didn’t want to find herself in trouble. There were a few times where she met up with the wrong people and found herself in bad situations. So she avoids others more often now.

The door bell rang, giving Katherine something to focus on. One of the butlers strutted out of the kitchen and opened the front door. Katherine peaked around him and saw a tall boy with brown hair and the most beautiful blue eyes ever, standing outside with an umbrella. Her heart stopped for a brief moment, trying to get him to stare into her eyes. He simply kept his focus on her father, a very arrogant expression on his face.

“Good morning, Mr. Kaiba, I must thank you gratefully for agreeing to taking my daughter to school on her first day,” Katherine’s father said.

Katherine’s eyes went wide as she stared at her father. She had wanted more than anything to avoid Seto Kaiba. But it looks like she couldn’t avoid this. What made Kaiba even agree to taking her!?

“Don’t mention it,” Kaiba replied.

Katherine rolled her eyes. To her, it was all too easy to tell Kaiba was acting. She could easily tell he didn’t want to do this, but why he didn’t refuse, Katherine wanted to find out.

“Good bye, Katherine, I bid thee the best of luck today.”

Her father kissed her head, squeezing her into a hug. Katherine smiled the best she could.

“Thank you, father.”

She gave a little bow with her head and stumbled outside with Kaiba. His limo driver opened the car door and Katherine climbed in. Kaiba sat next to her, keeping his distance and looking out the window. Katherine watched him, hardly noticing the car start moving. She wanted to look at his blue eyes again. Maybe she could discover why he seemed so disturbed?

“Thank you for taking me to school, Mr. Kaiba,” Katherine whispered, averting her eyes to the ground and fumbling with her hands in her lap.

“Seriously, don’t mention it,” Kaiba snapped.

A bitter bite in his voice stung Katherine’s ears. She flinched slightly, un-tucking her hair from her ear so that it fell to the side of her face. The rest of the drive was silent, giving Katherine time to think about her first day of school. Hopefully this year would be promising. She wanted to make friends and not have bad things happen to her.

Once the car stopped in front of the school doors, Katherine got out of the limo as fast as she could. She stumbled into the school, looking for someone-anyone-who seemed kind. Katherine wandered around, dodging people. Katherine stopped as she saw Kaiba cut her off.

“You left this,” he mumbled, handing her bag to her.

“Th-Thank you, Mr. Kaiba…” she stuttered.

She took her bag and held it against her chest. Her eyes darted around the area, taking in her surroundings. Kaiba just shrugged and placed a piece of neatly folded paper into Katherine’s hand. She glanced at it, thinking of what it could be.

“This is your schedule. Don’t lose it.”

Katherine unfolded the paper and skimmed the list. Once again she was in all advanced classes.

This was going to be a living nightmare…

“Are you in all my classes, Mr. Kaiba?” Katherine asked.

“Sadly...”

He walked off, heading into one of the rooms. Katherine bit her bottom lip, a depressing feeling inside her. Seto was so rude and she had to spend every class with him. Maybe someone would help her…

Katherine walked into her homeroom, greeted by groups of students bunched up and talking. They took no notice to her. Katherine took a seat near the back, trying to avoid attention, but attention couldn’t avoid her. A fairly tall boy with blonde hair and striking brown eyes sat in the seat in front of her. He gave her a huge toothy smile that made her blush.

“Whatsa pretty girl like you hidin’ back here for?” Katherine blushed and cast her eyes down. The boy laughed, lifting her chin up. His smile didn’t leave him. “You must be that new girl! I’m Joey, waz up!?”

Oh joy…everyone already knew she was going to be here…

Katherine gave a tiny giggle, finding a bit of courage to talk.

“My name is Katherine Beckman. I just moved here from Great Britain.”

“Great Britain? Ain’t that a long ways from Japan?” Katherine nodded. “Shit-”

Katherine burst out laughing. Joey lifted a brow, not understanding why she was laughing. “What’s so funny?” he asked. She looked back at him, trying to hold in her laugh, but it was way too hard once she stared at his dumbstruck face.

“It’s the way –laugh- you said…shit-!”

Katherine covered her mouth, ashamed she said just a dirty curse word. Joey just lifted a brow, confused.

“What’s the matter? I liked it when you were laughing…” Joey said.

Katherine averted her eyes, blushing at his comment.

“I shouldn’t have said that word. It’s very disrespectful and impolite for a young lady to say,” Katherine explained.

“Are you serious!? You’d better get some backbone ‘cause you’re gonna run into someone who will start callin’ ya names and ya need to step up and cuss ‘em out!” Joey exclaimed. Katherine gave another tiny giggle. “You’ve got a really cute giggle,” he complimented.

“Thank you.”

Joey smiled and opened his mouth to talk, but was cut off upon seeing Seto Kaiba walk over. Katherine immediately stopped giggling and smiling when she saw Seto. Joey gave a confused look, wondering what changed her sweetheart exposure.

“What do you think you’re doing, Wheeler?” Kaiba angrily asked.

“I’m just talkin’ to Katherine, is there a problem with that?” Joey snapped.

“You have no right to even be near Miss Beckman-”

“Why is that?”

“Because filth, like you, doesn’t deserve to be in the presence of a well raised young lady.”

Joey shrugged and stood. Katherine had to urge to shout and tell Kaiba to back off, but she remained silent and thought over their argument. She didn’t want to be so overprotected by someone she hated, especially when she seemed to have made a new friend.

“Catch ya later, Kat!” Joey said.

He winked and sat down near the front of the class.

Katherine smiled, “Kat? I like it…”

“Don’t expect me to let you hang around with him. Your father wouldn’t be pleased if you made friends with white trash,” Kaiba retorted.

Katherine simply nodded, “I understand, Mister Kaiba…”

Katherine kept staring at Joey, he was too hard to ignore. Joey had turned around and caught her stare. He gave her a wink and a smile. She blushed, but waved and smiled back. He was a very cute guy, and seemed extraordinarily nice. This year could possibly be the best one yet!

The bell rang, destroying Katherine’s happy moments from staring at Joey. She gathered her things and stalked behind Kaiba out of the classroom.
