By Light-Eco-Sage

Rated: Teen for language, violence, and romance/sexuality (Jak/Keira)

Summary: Take Jak II and stand it on its head. AU story. Jak volunteers for the Dark Warrior Program! He doesn’t hate Baron Praxis! He works for the Krimzon Guards as he tried to bring down the Underground! OMG! Totally backwards! But his destiny is still the same. Can this be fixed before time runs out… before everyone?

Disclaimer: I don’t own the settings or the characters at all. They all belong to Naughty Dog.

LES: I thought this up one night and just had to do it because I believe it is original. I’ve never seen someone do the complete opposite of Jak II. Jak works for the Baron?!? OMFG!!! But Erol will still hate Jak and call him a Dark Eco Freak, but only because he’s jealous. Oh, and Jak has complete control of his Dark Side because he doesn’t have anger issues like he does in the game. Oh, and Jak can talk right from the beginning. Anyway, on with the story!

Chapter I

Jak groaned as he came to, confused. The last thing he remembered was slamming hard into the ground after falling down from the sky. And then, after that, nothing…

The hit probably knocked me out… Jak thought to himself. He tried to sit up, but groaned in pain and stopped.

“Sit back.” A voice said. Jak looked around and saw someone in the room, a Healer by the look of him. “You sustained heavy injuries from a high-velocity collision with the ground.”

The elf finally decided to try his voice. “Where… where am I?”

“You are in a private ward in the infirmary of Haven City’s Palace.” The Healer said. “You’ll be fine. Initial tests of your Channeling abilities have shown that you have a high amplitude for Channeling Eco… one of the highest readings we’ve ever seen. You’ll have a favorable reaction to Green Eco.”

“So… I’ll be fine?” Jak asked.

“Sure.” The Healer said. “Just relax; you’ll heal faster that way.”

Jak did as he was told. He was used to Green Eco healings, having grown up with a Green Sage. Green Eco works best when combined with relaxation.

“Good.” The Healer said. “Now, if I can only ask a few questions…?”

“Err… sure.” Jak said.

“Your name?”

“Jak.”

“Any last name that goes with that?” The Healer asked.

“No.”

“Age?”

“Seventeen.”

“So young.” The Healer commented. “Thank you. I’ll be back later to check on your condition.” The Healer left.

Jak sat back and tried to determine what was wrong with him. Judging by the various pains that filled his body, he had a few broken ribs, his arm was broken, his opposite shoulder dislocated, his spine… not broken, but definitely cracked, as he couldn’t feel his legs to tell if they were injured or not. It was quite a list of injuries, and would normally have the elf down for the count. But he didn’t feel as bad as he should’ve felt.

He glanced at an IV that fed Green Eco directly into his bloodstream. Was it just him, or did the Eco seem purer than normal ‘wild’ Eco? Perhaps this Haven City had the Precursor-like technology to purify Eco? Purified Eco would certainly work better than wild Eco, not to mention that it was more controllable.

Content that, despite his numerous injuries, he would be better soon, Jak sat back and closed his eyes.

Just as the Baron asked, the Healer reported straight to the Throne Room. Baron Praxis, the militant ruler of Haven City, sat on the large Throne, listening to a report from his right-hand man, Erol.

“…hung himself in his cell during the night. It seemed that he would rather die than work for us. We even tried drugging him so he didn’t feel pain during the treatments, but it didn’t work. It’s not the pain. It’s just that they don’t want to cooperate with us.”

“So… it's not the pain…” The Baron mused. “We just need a powerful Channeler to sympathize with our cause.” The Baron looked up. “Ah, Doctor, came to report on our alien visitor?”

“He is not an alien, though he is without a doubt very strange.” The Healer said. “Here’s all the information I have on him. He claims his name is Jak; no last name. Possibly orphaned at a young age. His injuries, while numerous and serious, will not be fatal. In fact, he was already lucid when I left. He is possibly a Level Five Channeler, so he’ll respond to…”

Baron Praxis stood up suddenly. “Level Five?!? You are a fool, Doctor. Only Mar was a Level Five Channeler, and that fool died long ago.”

“Our tests are quite accurate, sir.” The Doctor said, a little angry at being called a fool, who wouldn’t be? “His reading was off the charts, and our charts go up to the upper level of Level Four.”

“Sir…” Erol began. “He could be of use to us. A Level Five Channeler? So far, we’ve only been able to use Level Fours.”

“Yes.” The Baron said. “But we need his cooperation! Then he’ll be more likely to serve us.”

“Shall I go, sir?” Erol asked.

“No, idiot! Your method of explaining something to someone usually involves torture. We need this Channeler on our side. I’ll do this myself.” The Baron turned to the Healer. “What did you say his name was?”

“Jak, sir.” The Healer said.

“Jak? Named after the hero who defeated the Dark Sages five-hundred years ago?” Erol asked.

“I would assume so.” The Baron said. “Come; let’s go meet this Level Five Channeler.” They left the Throne Room together. A short walk later, and they were in the Palace’s infirmary. Jak was the only person in it, so the Baron identified him easily. “Jak?” He spoke. The elf looked around, and seemed initially put-off by the Baron’s appearance.

“Who are you?” Jak asked.

“I am Baron Praxis, the ruler of Haven City.” Praxis said. His first thought was that the boy was a softy, but there was something about him that screamed ‘true Warrior’.

“Oh. I…err… I didn’t mean to be rude… your Majesty.” Jak said.

Praxis waved a hand. “No matter. You didn’t know that. Oh, and you can just call me ‘sir’. That will do just fine.”

“Okay… sir… why are you here? I’m not in trouble, am I?” Jak asked.

“Oh no, not at all.” Baron Praxis said. “In fact, we are here to see if you could be of service to us.”

“Service? What kind of service, sir?” Jak asked.

“Well, it has come to my attention that you may be a Level Five Channeler…” The Baron began.

“Level Five?” Jak asked, confused.

“A system of classifying Channelers.” The Healer explained. “Level One is the lowest, and Level Five is the highest, and also the rarest.”

“Okay… so… why do you want my Channeling abilities?”

“Perhaps I’ll start at the beginning?” Praxis mused. “Five hundred years ago, just as our City was completed, we were attacked by vicious and intelligent beasts that we called Metal-Heads. For half-a-millennia, we have been under siege from these creatures, fighting a constant war. I have a plan to defeat them, but it requires the cooperation of a powerful Channeler. We have discovered that certain powerful Channelers have the ability to absorb and contain small concentrated amounts of Dark Eco and bend it to their will.”

“Dark Eco!” Jak gasped. “But that’s deadly!”

“No. For powerful Channelers and in small amounts, it’s not deadly.” Praxis said. “Other subjects have displayed almost a two-hundred percent increase in strength and… other abilities. It’s called the Dark Warrior Project, and I think you’ll be a perfect subject.”

“But… I could die! And even if I didn’t die… wouldn’t that hurt?” Jak asked.

“There will be no pain.” Praxis said. “We will drug you so you won’t feel a thing.”

“Well… of course I want to help, but… Dark Eco? Isn’t that going a little far?” Jak asked.

“The Metal-Heads have used Dark Eco against us before.” Praxis said. “It would be weakness not to respond in kind. Besides, we’ve saved your life. That’s worth a few painless treatments a few times a week, isn’t it?”

Jak looked away. Praxis was right. His life had been saved by him. He was in debt to them, and he would have to help them against these Metal-Head creatures. He took a breath. “Okay. I’ll do it.”

“Good man.” Praxis said. “We’ll start once you’ve recovered from your injuries.” With that, the group left.

Jak suddenly had a vivid mental image of Gol and Maia. “Precursors… I hope I don’t become them.” Jak prayed.

LES: Well, first chapter’s done. Kind of sucky, but it’s still good.
