Death Note: Too Much
Summary: She had to go back, to make sure that this time none of them would die. However, she didn't plan on being suspected just for going to a bookstore and embroiled in the madness that she had knowingly created.
I don't own Death Note, which is a good thing since if I did own it; you all know where the pairings would end up and how differently it would all end. But I do own this idea and the OCs! (Besides the fact that Near and L are related, which the wonderful Nirah graciously let me use, and a few other things...)
Chapter 6: Accuracy
"Wow!!" Double-K exclaimed as soon as she had walked into their working space and spotted all the people who worked there. There weren't very many, and not all of them were present, but it still must have shocked her to see any people at all. Especially the one that had jumped up as soon as he did a double take at her appearance. "Matsuda!!" She waved to him as he rushed around the couch and dove in to give her a strong hug. L and Raito were, needless to say, more than shocked and speechless. "You've obtained your goal then, like you told me you would! You aren't that much of a hindrance, I hope?"
"Heh, heh, kind of..." He replied sheepishly, still hugging her close. "Ku--er, Double-K, I've missed you so much!!"
L recovered first from the shock that all of them now shared, even Watari who was the other L in the computer, and shook his head slightly as he thought about all of the possible solutions that could explain this situation. Raito took a subconscious mental note that Matsuda obviously knew her real name. "...Matsuda...I'll assume that either you had a child at some point or that she's a very close friend..."
"Ah!" Matsuda flushed suddenly, letting go of Double-K and backing up a little self-consciously. "N-no! I haven't had any children at all! I just..." His inarticulate but ready explanation stopped him as he tried to find something better to explain with, and Double-K smiled as she watched him think. L recognized that look of fondness, so he assumed that she must be his close friend. But...when had she ever met him before? "Oh! I got it! I've known Ku--er, Double-K since I was a rookie cop!"
"...well, that explains a lot, then..." Soichiro spoke up from behind Matsuda where Aizawa and Mogi were sitting around the tables for the meeting. Raito and L both stared back at Soichiro, begging for an explanation with their confused expressions, and Matsuda began to laugh with Double-K over their confusion. "I knew I had seen you before...but you still look like you're so young..."
"Yup!" Double-K laughed, holding on to Matsuda's hand as she pressed her thumb to her lips with her free hand. Matsuda smiled at this old habit that she had, and chuckled merrily at his old friend's strange ways that hadn't seemed to change at all since he had last seen her. "I was here in Japan for a bit before returning home. I think it was...five years, at the least!"
"It was five years, Double-K!" Matsuda lightly hit her on the head with his fist, a teasing yet slightly reprimanding tone in his voice. With Double-K there, Raito noticed that Matsuda seemed almost like a grown-up now. "You came here when I had first joined the NPA, and I was a total rookie..."
Double-K nodded silently, knowing that what Matsuda said was completely true. Behind Soichiro, Mogi and Aizawa sighed at how much Matsuda seemed to change within the few moments of Double-K, Raito, and L's arrival. It seemed that there really was more to the childish police officer than what was on the surface, L deduced, but at the moment he had no time for this reunion. He stepped forward and took Double-K's wrist kindly; a silent reminder that they had to interrogate her before they could accept her into the task force. Raito blinked in realization as well, and stared at the computer bearing the letter "L" proudly before following L and Double-K into an empty room, where L had interviewed the others on their first day to see if they were Kira.
"So, Matsuda," Soichiro recaptured Matsuda's attention, who flinched at the harsh tone in Soichiro's voice. "I've never heard of you speak of Double-K before. I've only seen her hanging around the police headquarters a few times, some years back, and she always looked the same age."
Matsuda shook his head and rubbed the back of it through his dark black hair, closing his dark brown eyes in embarrassment. "Oh, you really have to ask Double-K why herself..." He explained uselessly, laughing lightly at his own stupidity. "I promised her that I wouldn't tell anyone else, and I like to keep my promises to my friends..."
"So you admit that you have feelings for her?" Aizawa teased the already embarrassed police officer, who turned bright red at the suggestion and shook his head violently in protest. Aizawa laughed at his reaction, as did Mogi and Soichiro. "It's all right, Matsuda; I was only asking if you thought of her as a good friend!"
...xXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx...
Double-K looked around the room quickly, noting that there were no recording devices or cameras inside to record what was going to be said. L obviously wanted to keep this a secret, maybe because he suspected her position in this plot, but there was no need to go to such length to keep it secret. She raised her shoulders in a shrug, thinking about the possibilities this opened up for her. It wasn't all bad at least, and now she had a chance to talk to Raito about things.
"Double-K." L began, clearing his throat to recapture her ever-straying attention. Both detectives had their doubts about this approach, but something had to be done in order for them to feel like they could trust her. "Will you please start by giving us your name and where you have lived for the past few years?"
She nodded, trying to keep her mind off of the fact that the two older detectives sat directly across for her, side-by-side like they really were working together. It was almost too hard to respond without the need to talk about it, but she would have to save her overflowing with emotions thoughts for later. They didn't know yet, anyways. "Of course. My name is Double-K, and I have been living in England for the past year, but I was in Japan mostly."
"Good..." L noted, silent for a moment as he burned the information into his mind. Raito knew they weren't allowed to write anything down, but he still took a mental note like L was doing too. Ryuk, behind them, started to laugh crazily again, and Raito recognized it was the way he had laughed when Naomi Misora had given him an alias instead of her real name. "Now, tell me all you know about the Kira case."
A difficult question, Raito realized, right off the bat. L was sticking to his word; he would keep this interrogation short and sweet, so there wouldn't be any time to reveal the information he had told Raito about that would be able to let someone know his name. L, however, was not really worried about her answer to the question. He was still preoccupied with the fact that this was the reason why he hadn't seen her in such a long time.
"Um, I know that Kira is a killer who targets criminals and thinks that he's going to rule the world as a god..." Double-K listed off, her eyes raised to the ceiling as if her answers were written there. Raito's mind began to panic at how accurate her words were, but felt with some relief that this was the reason why he had given up on being Kira. Now that his goals were being recited back to him, he could see how childish he really had been. "I also know that he's a high school student living in Japan, and he's a straight 'A' student who seems like the picture-perfect teenager."
'No!!' Raito glanced uneasily at L, knowing that her information was dead on and painted a large, painful target on him. Not very many high school students were like him; straight "A" students who seemed like the picture-perfect teenager. 'Damn, she'll ruin everything I've worked so hard to erase! This target she's painting; is it on pure, intentional purpose?! Wait, how does she even know all of this stuff about Kira? And where is her evidence for these accusations against me?!'
"There's also the fact that Kira still has a purity around him that was unnatural from the start with his first victim, Otoharada Kurou, who was only a test of his powers." L was beginning to smile at all the information she had gathered herself and the conclusions she reached. They were exactly like his own suspicions, but they pointed more at Raito than he was comfortable with. He wondered how she agreed with Raito that Kira had this sense of purity around him, but ignored it as she continued. "There was a five-to-ten percent chance that Kira was among a throng of families being investigated by the twelve detectives who were killed after he found out that they were investigating the Japanese Police Force, but that was dismissed after no evidence could be found by observing the families with hidden surveillance cameras, which Kira knew about. However, I reached my own conclusion about the deaths of the FBI agents, and I saw that Kira killed only one of them, Raye Penber, while forcing Raye Penber to kill the others without his realization."
Raito was seriously beginning to hate this girl. Everything he had worked for, everything that he had wanted to erase and keep hidden in secret, was all being pulled out in the open by this girl who knew way more than she should have. How had she even found out most of these things, or were they just groundless accusations? 'Bull shit. These are too accurate for groundless accusations...'
"Hyuk, hyuk, looks like she's going to hand you to L on a silver platter, Light." Ryuk joked behind him, thoroughly regaled by all of her crazily correct logic. "And there's no use asking me; I don't know how she figures all of this out either."
Raito glanced at Ryuk from the corner of his eyes without shifting them from looking at Double-K, and corrected himself. No, there were two people whom he was getting the increasing urge to strangle, and one was the loudmouth shinigami behind him. He noted, with a smirk, that the shinigami had discreetly kept out the statement that he had never seen her before to back up his account that he didn't know how she had gotten this information. If she had been following him, Ryuk would have surely noticed.
"About the second Kira," Double-K continued, gnawing on her thumb, enjoying herself despite the fact that she may have been giving away more information than she needed to. L was riveted, and Raito was stressed under his layer of outer interest. "I think that they're a Kira fanatic and are controlled more by their passion rather than their rationality. Furthermore, because of this fact, we can deduce safely that they are female rather than male."
"Thank you, Double-K." L smiled his weird smile as his thumb pressed his lips in thought. Double-K's eyes flashed with uncertainty at L's smile, but then pretended she didn't see anything and smiled back. "I shall go and consult the other L about this." He turned to Raito and smiled a happier smile, which even Raito could tell was used to cover something up. L was not the type of person to smile so happily, even if this did really point exactly at his first suspicion; that Raito was indeed Kira. "Please, keep and eye on Double-K while I go do this, Asahi-kun."
Without a further note or any more explanation, L left the room. Raito and Double-K shared a look that clearly showed both of their displeasure at being left alone together. Raito leaned further back in his chair in an attempt to calm himself down so as not to show any signs of needing to kill something. Double-K observed his pressured expression as he rubbed his forehead with one hand, and looked up exactly at the place where Ryuk was standing with a shrug that seemed to tell him she didn't understand Raito's behavior.
"Tell me one thing, Double-K..." Raito spoke up suddenly, catching Double-K off guard as she flinched from his underlying tone of anger in his voice. She did look at him curiously with her thumb raised to her mouth, waiting for his question patiently, and Raito had to stop himself from thinking that she looked too much like L for his own comfort. Their hair colors were utterly different, and yet they both managed to look like on another so easily. "Where did you get all of this information on Kira? Why do you seem to hate him so much as to paint this target on him?"
"Well..." Double-K looked up again, chewing on her thumb as she followed the pattern on the ceiling with her eyes. "I thought that Kira was holding L hostage, since the last time I heard L he sounded like he was completely distraught..." She sighed, hanging her head and catching it in her hands. "It seems that I was mistaken, though, and now he's upset again..."
Raito blinked, confused at this new information. He had seen it, but he wasn't quite sure that Double-K had noticed that he had seen it. Therefore, he was going to play stupid for a bit. "...L is...upset...? L...can get upset?"
"Yes..." Double-K sighed again, shaking her head slowly as Ryuk began to laugh again. "This time it's my fault...I didn't know that he was so far in this...and you, Kira, were..."
She sighed as she collapsed her body into a small ball, legs dangling off the chair she was sitting on and her arms covering up her face. Raito noted that she called him Kira, which meant that her accusations weren't really groundless, but that still didn't explain how she had known all of those things. Ryuk started shaking his head, surprisingly, though he was still chuckling at her.
"Come on, Kiara!" He laughed as she lifted her head up to look at him with a more that annoyed look on her face. Now Raito was bewildered. So she had been able to see Ryuk! Since when had she touched his Death Note, though? And he had called her 'Kiara' for some odd reason, even though Matsuda had implied that her name started with a 'Ku'. Had she been lying to them all about her name, or was Ryuk calling her a different name on purpose? How did Ryuk even know a name he could call her that was different from her true name? "You can't be that worried over such a trivial matter! And besides, isn't your brother depending on you to make things run smoothly?"
"Ryuk..." She groaned at the shinigami, a smile playing on her face as she continued to chew on her thumb. "Don't call me that until you actually know I am Kiara. And anyways, things are running smoothly." She turned to Raito, who had been having trouble following things after Ryuk spoke to her but understood now that her real name wasn't Kiara, and smiled apologetically. "Sorry, Kira-san...or, I mean, Raito-san..." She smirked as he glared at her, knowing that she had heard L say his name while they were on their way to the headquarters. "But you have no need to worry about being found out as Kira at the moment. There are others on their way here, trying to find you and L, but as long as you follow through with your plan after the second Kira is caught and there is no way out but to go through with it, you'll be fine."
"That's reassuring, coming from you..." Raito tried his best to sound sarcastic, but he couldn't use any sarcasm because he figured that she was probably right. Whatever the plan he had to come up with in order to save his hide; it would have to be good enough to deceive L again, he would have to go through with it now just because she told him to. "Well, until L returns, there's no need to hold anything back from you at the moment, seeing as you know everything somehow..."
"Not everything!" She laughed, rubbing the back of her head through her long purple hair with her free hand. "I didn't know that this would happen to you or L so early on in this, and maybe that was my fault for underestimating human emotions..."
Before Raito could ask what the hell she meant by that, L came back in and sat down next to Raito again. Double-K snickered silently at Ryuk's expression, meant to make her laugh, but quieted at L's hard stare. Raito looked at the older detective expectantly, waiting for him to note that the suspicion against him had gone up, while L wondered how to word his question in a way that wouldn't get Raito too curious, but so Double-K would still understand what he was asking for.
"Double-K," He finally decided, speaking up so that both younger humans in the room could hear him. "Could you tell me please where the others that accompanied you here have gone?"
Double-K inhaled deeply, having dreaded this question ever since she knew that L would be interrogating her. It had to come up, and why not sooner than later? "Actually..." She looked to the side nervously, feeling like she was about to bring L's hope crashing down to Earth and igniting it in a rush of flames yet again. Raito noted her worried look, and the fact that L was trying to avoid direct confrontation over this question even though Double-K had told him herself of those who were coming. But L didn't know that Raito knew; Double-K did. Letting out her breath, she smiled apologetically at L and prepared for the worst. "I have no idea where they went. They seemed to have ditched me back at the bookstore..."
L was silent for a while, before sighing and standing up again. "...thank you, Double-K." He finally spoke, forcing his dreaded emotions to stay bottled up inside of him. Raito saw the grief flash onto his face before L kept it in check and let the emotionless expression take over again. Raito, no matter what had happened just then, couldn't help feeling his heart ache for L's sadness in some strange form of sympathy. He suspected there was something more behind that ache, however. "Raito-kun, let's return to work for today. We still have to find that second Kira."
Spi: This is becoming too confusing...Well, for me. Anyways, we need reviews, people. Review, and we all know that Mello and Raito will get hot. (You know, from lying under all those reviews we stack on top of them.) ...Not a Mello x Raito reference!!
