Chapter 2

“Oh. You’re not James.” Lily cocked her head of red hair at Harry, her green eyes probing his matching ones intently. “Strange… you look just like him.”

“R-really?” Harry stuttered.

She shrugged her petite shoulders and said, “I’ve never seen you before. I’m Lily Evans.”

She offered her hand for him to shake and he took it, shaking it gently. “I’m… Derek. Derek Smith,” he countered, flashing a glance at Hermione. “Sorry… I’m new here.”

“Oh,” Lily said, looking surprised. “Are you a foreign exchange student?”

“Er… yeah,” he said. “Who’s this James person you were looking for?”

“Oh… him,” Lily said. “He’s this boy in my class who’s been asking me out since third year. I’ve always turned him down though. He’s quite the prankster. However, he’s been made Head Boy this year and I’m Head Girl… we may as well get along. We’re friends.”

“Oh… so he’s not your boyfriend?” Harry asked, sounding disappointed.

Lily laughed, as if she found his question amusing. “Potter? My boyfriend? Wherever did you get such an idea, Derek? No, he’s not my boyfriend.”

“Oh,” Harry said, his face crestfallen. Trianna cleared her throat loudly to snap him out of his trance. “Right. These are my… sisters, um…”

“Kari Smith,” Trianna supplied, stepping up to the plate. She tucked a lock of her blonde hair behind her ear and smiled at Lily, her blue eyes lighting up. “Pleased to meet you.”

“Same,” Lily said, smiling sincerely. She turned to Hermione. “And you are…?”

“Jane Smith,” Hermione replied, substituting her middle name for her first name. “And again, nice to meet you.”

“My pleasure,” Lily said. “Come on- I’ll show you up to the Headmaster’s office so he can sort out arrangement for the three of you.”

“So… four new Gryffindors…” said a younger Professor Dumbledore, peering at Harry, Hermione, and Trianna from behind his spectacles, “Derek, Kari, and Jane Smith.”

Trianna nodded confidently, not a flicker of hesitance in her icy blue eyes. Harry squeezed his eyes shut tight and thanked God that Trianna was such a good Legilimens, which was part of the reason she was such a great Auror. “Derek, there is a free bed in a seventh year boys’ dorm, due to the fact that James Potter has been made Head Boy. You’ll be sharing a room with Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and Sirius Black.”

“Thank you, sir,” Harry said, breathing a sigh of relief and happiness. Either Dumbledore had bought their lie or he was simply letting them have their fun. Knowing Dumbledore, it was most likely the latter.

“Kari and Jane… there are two empty beds in a seventh year girls’ dorm, because Lily Evans was made Head Girl and Regina Sparks unfortunately was forced to relocate to Ireland. You’ll be in a room with Alice Thomas and Ellen Harris.”

“Thank you, Professor,” Hermione said cordially. “Thank you for your hospitality.”

“Of course,” he smiled knowingly at them. Trianna hazarded a glance at Harry- Dumbledore knew. “You may go. I believe Miss Evans is waiting for you rather anxiously outside my office.”

Sure enough, the three of them found Lily waiting for them just outside the entrance to the Headmaster’s office. “So?” she asked, smiling at them eagerly.

“I’m staying in a dorm with three blokes named Remus, Peter, and Sirius,” Harry supplied.

“Oh, I’m sure you’ll love it, Derek,” she said, placing a hand on his shoulder. “They’re James’s friends; they’re quite all right once you get to know them, though a bit immature and mischievous.”

“We’re in a dorm with two girls named Alice and Ellen,” Hermione told her.

“Oh, they’re my friends,” Lily squealed. “You two will simple love it. They’re amazing.” She turned on her heel and started leading them towards the Great Hall. “Let’s go to the feast, shall we?”

They took seats at the Gryffindor table and Lily began to introduce them to their classmates. “Don’t you think they’ll notice when the foreign exchange students disappear without a trace?” Harry muttered to Hermione.

“Probably,” she whispered back. “But I’m hoping they’ll just forget about it or think it was a practical joke or something.”

“Or they’ll simply think we’ve died,” Trianna supplied.

“Right,” Harry said through gritted teeth. “That’s cheerful all right.”

“Oi, Lily!”

Lily whipped her head around to face a black haired boy with twinkling hazel eyes, who looked just like Harry…

“James!” she cried, standing to give him a hug. “It’s good to see you.”

“It’s even greater to see you,” he countered, grinning at her. He then caught sight of Harry. “Who’s the new bloke?”

“That’s Derek Smith,” Lily informed him. “He’s a foreign exchange student.”

“Blimey, he looks just like me,” James said. He then grinned at Harry. “Sorry, mate. It’s just kind of like looking in a mirror, you know?”

“I know what you mean,” he replied.

“I’m James, by the way,” he told him. “Head Boy of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”

“Someone loves themselves a little too much,” Lily teased. “I still don’t know why Dumbledore made you Head Boy. He must seriously be off his rocker.”

“I’m Derek’s sister, Jane,” Hermione told him.

“And I’m his other sister, Kari,” Trianna piped up.

“Are you all in seventh year?” James queried. Harry nodded. “That’s funny. You must be triplets, but you three don’t look anything alike.”

Hermione bit her lip. “We’re…”

“…adopted!” Trianna said suddenly, covering for Hermione. “Derek’s actually our parents’ biological son, but Jane and I are adopted.”

“Really?” Lily said. “That’s fascinating. I’ve always wanted to meet someone who was adopted.”

“Oh, yeah,” James said. “I nearly forgot to introduce you to my thicker than boards mates. This is Sirius Black, please no name puns, Remus Lupin, not to be confused with Romulus, the better twin, and Peter Pettigrew, the runt of the litter.”

“Who the hell is Romulus?” Harry asked, cocking his head at his father.

“Romulus and Remus founded Rome,” Trianna replied. “They fought over who would rule. The auguries declared Romulus king, but Remus disagreed, so they battled and Romulus killed Remus.”

“Thanks for that, Prongs,” said a sandy haired boy with blue gray eyes. He turned to Trianna, Harry, and Hermione. “But I don’t actually have a twin.”

“And I actually like name puns,” said a boy with dark hair and handsome features. “I don’t know why James told you not to make them.”

“Because I’m bloody tired of them,” James muttered, taking a seat next to Lily. “Let’s get to eating, shall we?”

“I’m so sleepy.”

Hermione could barely keep her eyes open as she, Trianna, Harry, Lily, James, Remus, Peter, and Sirius made their way up to the Gryffindor Tower. “We’re almost there, Jane,” Remus reassured her. “You’ll be fine.”

Suddenly, Hermione tripped over her own feet and landed flat on her face, her messenger bag sent flying. “I beg to differ,” she muttered, realizing just how bad the floors of Hogwarts tasted. They really ought to clean these better, she thought. She looked up and saw her messenger bag lying about five feet away and the vial that had held the potion broken on the floor in shards. “Oh no.”

“What’s wrong?” Sirius asked as she rushed over to the vial to see if she could salvage any of the potion. “Here, I’ll do it- Evanesco!” The potion was cleared away.

Hermione tried her best not to look horrified as she stuttered her thanks. “What’s wrong?” Lily asked her.

“Nothing,” Hermione lied through gritted teeth. “I’m just tired; let’s go.”

“Hermione? What’s wrong?” Harry asked, gripping her shoulders gently as soon as he, Hermione, and Trianna were alone in the Gryffindor common room. “And don’t lie; Trianna and I know you better.”

“The potion’s spilled,” she wailed. “It’s gone.”

“Do you remember the ingredients?” Trianna asked gently, hugging her friend.

“No,” Hermione replied. “It was too complicated.”

Harry looked as if he was about to say ‘I told you so’, but Trianna silence him with a flash of her icy eyes. “Can you look it up in the library?”

“No,” Hermione shook her head. “The book wasn’t published until January of 1978.”

“But that’s another four months!” Harry gasped.

“You guys… we’re stuck.”
