Chapter 1: Lighting the Flame
It was a bright day on Conch Island. At the harbor, a dinghy had just pulled into port. A young man, seventeen at most emerged from the small boat, nibbling on what appeared to be a piece of brown licorice. He wore a large white shirt and baggy pants. He had green eyes that looked like emeralds, and messy brown hair. He didn’t wear shoes or socks, and he slightly slouched when he walked. If it weren’t for the fact that he was of normal health, people would have mistaken him for a zombie. He looked deep in thought, and people stared when he would wave his finger in the air as if writing something. But he didn’t care. To tell you the truth, he didn’t even notice. As he walked down the road, he started to sing.
Well I was there on the day they sold the ships for the queen
And when the lights all went out, we watched our lives on the screen
I hate the ending myself, but it started with an alright scene.
At the other end of the island, another man stepped off of a boat. This man was thin and tall. It looked as if the wind would blow him away if not for the light muscle he had. He had long white hair and a t-shirt that had the kanji for tiger on the front. He wore sandals and had very pale skin. However, as soon as he had stepped off the boat, marines surrounded him and put his left hand in a seastone gauntlet. From the center of the crowd, a man in a white coat which had a tail that reached down to his ankles emerged. He wore a newsboy cap and had light blond hair which hid his eyes. He spoke in a slow tempo, “White Leopard, you are under arrest for the destruction of five marine bases in the last two weeks. Take him away.” And with that, they trudged into town with their prisoner.
As the marines marched into the square, the other man took notice of the young man in the handcuffs. The brown haired boy was sure that the boy in shackles was someone he knew but he quickly dismissed it, deeming it impossible. As he was about to leave, he heard a slow voice ring out to the crowd. “Citizens! There is no need to fear! The revolutionary White Leopard has been captured!” At that moment, the brown haired man turned around and bolted at the marine. He punched him square in the jaw, but when he got up, everyone noticed the strangest thing. There was a burn on the commodore’s chin. The tall young man was in awe. The commodore shouted, “Don’t just stand there, capture him!” But before anyone could, he was gone. “Dammit! I want a background check on that savage!” And with that, they stormed off to the base.
20 minutes later; North side of the island
The man with the brown hair was walking down the road. He turned into an alley and walked into a restaurant. He sat on a stool in a very strange position. He had his knees parallel to his chin, and held his knees with his hands. He looked at the cook and said, “Oi, ossan. Do you have any milk?”
“Yep. How much would you like?”
“Give me 30 glasses.”
“Ha! That’s a good one. Now seriously, how much would you like?”
“I already told you. 30 glasses.” he said, unemotionally.
The barkeep’s jaw dropped. “R-Right away sir!”
After the boy had his drinks, he was in a much better mood. He called out, “Oi, ossan! Come here! Sorry if I was a baka before. I’ve been having a rough day.”
“It’s okay, kid,” the barkeep smiled. “Happens to the best of us.”
The boy slammed a wad of money onto the table and got up. “Well, I guess I’d better get going.”
“Oh? What for?”
“I’m storming the base.”
The barkeeper just blinked and thought, Damn... I’ve got to stop drinking the leftover grog.
30 minutes later; Marine Base No. 56
White Leopard was sitting in the corner of his cell. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a mask. It was silver and in the shape of a leopard’s face. He thought, That man, I can’t get him out of my head. Was it... no! That’s impossible! But then again... But at that moment, a faint voice was coming from the hall. It was someone singing.
It was the roar of the crowd that gave me heartache to sing
It was a lie when they smiled and said you won’t feel a thing
And as we ran from the cops, we laughed so hard it would sting
It was the brown-haired man from before. He had a sword made of what appeared to be some kind of smooth black stone. He was slashing marines down easily. After they were all unconscious or had run away, he sat down across from White Leopard. White Leopard looked up at the other man. “Who the hell are you?”
He looked up and said, “My name is Kodji. Now, would you mind telling me who you really are?”
White Leopard looked as if he were dead. He cried, “I already told you! I’m White Leopard!” He held up the silver mask. “And what right do you have to question my identity when you’re copying my best friend!” He stood up and grabbed Kodji’s shirt trough the bars.
“White Leopard is dead! And if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you…” A tear trailed down Kodji’s face. The man with the white hair let go of Kodji’s shirt.
“That song… My best friend and I would sing it all the time. I was never that good, though,” He sat down. “Doesn’t it go like this?”
If I’m so wrong,
How can you listen all night long?
Not that it matters after I’m gone
Because you never learn a single thing.
“So you’re not dead… Byakko Ryōkaji.” Kodji said.
Byakko’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t believe that his best friend, who had supposedly died six years ago, was now standing in front of him. Kodji said, “Stand back. I’m getting you out.” He gripped the bars of Byakko’s cell and closed his eyes. Then, the cell bars seemed to melt before his eyes.
“H-How the hell did you do that?” Byakko managed to say as he stepped out of his cell.
“I ate the Busu-Busu No Mi. I can control fire and lava!” But before Kodji could say anything else, he heard footsteps. “Damn! More marines!” Kodji ran towards them and held out his hand with his palm facing the horde of marines. “Yougan Kabe!” Lava flowed out of Kodji’s hand and hardened, forming a wall between them. “Come on!” As they ran up the stairs, they saw a bright light. “Yatta! We’re almost there!” But as they ran through to the base’s exterior, a slow voice rang out from behind them.
“Lawliet D. Kodji. Hello.” They turned around to see the commodore who had captured Byakko before.
“Hey! It’s, it’s… Exactly who are you?” Byakko cried. Kodji sweatdropped.
“I am Commodore Sapēnto. Now, you shall DIE!” And as he finished his sentence, he became much thinner. His blond hair receded, and his newsboy cap fell off. His pupils became slits and black scales began to cover his whole body. He grew fangs in his mouth and his legs disappeared so that a muscular tail wrapped in a coil was supporting him. “You see, I ate the Hebi-Hebi No Mi, Model: Anaconda. He lunged at Kodji, who disappeared.
“Honestly, did you think that a simple trick could kill me?” Kodji chuckled as he reappeared behind Sapēnto. “Normally, I wouldn’t use my true fighting style against someone as weak as you. But if you insist… SORU!” Kodji disappeared for a couple of seconds and reappeared beside Byakko. “You see, I am a master of a fighting style known as the Rokushiki.”
“So what was that? Some sort of teleportation technique?” Byakko asked.
“No. It’s actually a technique that allows me to move at dectuple speed. Geppou!” Kodji jumped up repeatedly, going higher up without touching the ground. After a little while, he came down.
Sapēnto was getting pissed off. “Enough!” He repeatedly jabbed his head towards Kodji.
“Kami-e.” The jabs came right at him, but none of them connected. It was as if Kodji was a piece of paper floating in the breeze. Sapēnto then got down on his front and swung at Kodji with his tail. “Tekkai.” Aside from the fact that the tail and it’s stinger hit Kodji, it seemed as if nothing else had happened. But then, the stinger shattered and Sapēnto screamed in agony. “Thanks to Tekkai, my muscles are as hard as iron. Good luck getting through that.” Kodji smiled, “Now it’s my urn to go on the offensive.” Kodji pointed at Sapēnto. “20 seconds.” He ran at the commodore. “Shigan!” The finger went so fast, it pierced Sapēnto’s scales. “And now for my favorite. Rankyaku!” He kicked out and an eerie blade that seemed to be made of air sped towards Sapēnto and and hit him square in the chest. “Zero.” Sapēnto fell down, clearly unconscious. Kodji took off his jacket and searched the pockets until he found what he was looking for. A key, and an old piece of paper. He walked over to Byakko and undid the seastone gauntlet on his right hand. As Kodji and Byakko were about to leave the base, Kodji handed the slip of paper to an awestruck marine.
As the marine looked at the note, his jaw dropped as he cried, “Oh my god! Sapēnto has been using the taxpayer’s money to make a statue of himself!”
1 day later; Northern side of the island
Kodji and Byakko were eating at the restaurant. Kodji said, “So, are you going to be my nakama or not?
Byakko was surprised that Kodji had to ask. He replied, “Yeah! But we’re wanted criminals, so what are we anyway?”
“We’re pirates. But we should leave the island soon. I heard that someone’s coming to arrest Sapēnto.”
“Okay, but there’s something I have to do first.”
“Same here. Let’s meet at the eastern port in 20 minutes. Okay?”
“Deal.” Byakko then started to change shape. He grew white fur all over his body. He was on all fours with claws on his paws. He then trotted out of the restaurant.
“Hmm. Guess I’m not the only one who got a Devil Fruit over these last six years.” And Kodji left too, asking everyone in town the same question.
20 minutes later; Eastern Harbor
Byakko was sitting at the docks holding his mask. Father, this is all that I ever had to show me who you were. But you left us, and I don’t want to turn into someone like that. Goodbye. And with that, he threw the mask into the harbor, sinking to the depths below. As he turned around, he saw Kodji leaning against the boat.
“Good job. Let’s go.” And they set sail.

I hope you enjoyed it. Don’t get Kodji D. Lawliet confused with Kodji from my other fanfic, Nakama. THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PEOPLE, in completely different universes. Also, if you know the name of the song Kodji and Byakko were singing, I’ll tell you a spoiler about later chapters in the story. Also, please review.
