Written purely because I have 19 fics, and I wanted to make it 20.

It was common knowledge in the village, really. No one messed with Urameshi Yusuke, Kuwabara Kazuma, or Jaganshi Hiei—especially not the latter, whose family was the richest in the entire village.

And as gorgeous as they were (and all the girls in the village agreed) no girl in her right mind ever tried to flirt with them. Yukimura Keiko and Jaganshi Yukina held sole claim to the first two teens. (Even though the latter was a lot nicer when someone did try to flirt with Kuwabara.)

No one ever flirted with Jaganshi Hiei, even if they were clinically insane. It just wasn’t worth the risk.

-

“Hiei!” Urameshi Yusuke shouted as he entered his friend’s house, “I’ve got food!” the volume of his voice increased, and he waved around said food enticingly.

“I’m not Kuwabara.” Hiei said tiredly as he rounded the corner of the hallway in his house. “And I’m not a dog.” he frowned, “I’m not going to come just because you wave food at me.”

Yusuke raised an eyebrow, “You’re in an awfully good mood today, Hiei. I was waiting for you to make some remark about how Kuwabara and dogs were similar or whatnot.”

Hiei smirked, “How could I? He’s too obsessed with that cat of his. Dogs don’t like cats.”

“Hah.” Yusuke laughed, “Forgot about that.”

Hiei shook his head and snorted, before continuing to walk down the hallway with Yusuke at his side, still laughing. Hiei paused and turned, frowning, “What are you even doing here?”

“What?” Yusuke stopped laughing and looked up confusedly.

“Weren’t you going to talk to Yukimura’s parents?” a slow smirk started to spread across Hiei’s face, “About officially going out with her?”

“…crap.”

-

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.” Yusuke mumbled through a series of short gasps, “Keiko’s gonna kill me.” he grabbed his head between his hands, “I’m gonna make a bad impression, and she’s already pissed enough about me not diverting away the girls who flirt with me and this is just going to make it worse.”

Hiei only smirked.

“—and I knew I was forgetting something and damn it why did I come find you instead? You’re not very helpful—though you did remind me—” Yusuke glanced up, “—or were you just doing that for amusement?”

Hiei’s expression didn’t change as they walked hurriedly through the streets.

“—and now her parents are going to say no and I’m gonna be screwed and Keiko’s gonna kill me.”

“Shut up.” Hiei spoke for the first time since Yusuke had dragged Hiei out of his house.

Yusuke shot Hiei a glare, and quickened his pace. “I’m gonna be late in about 5 minutes and all you can tell me to do is shut up?”

“Yes.” Hiei answered coolly, “So shut up.”

“God, I hate you sometimes.”

As the two kept walking, Yusuke continued to grumble to himself about his misfortune. Who had decided that he’d be the one to go see Keiko’s parents anyways? Why couldn’t Keiko come see his? And why did Hiei always act like there was a stick stuck up his ass? Really, would it hurt the guy to smile in awhile? But not at Yusuke’s expense of course. And really, what kind of—

“You’re cute. Why don’t you come somewhere with us? We’ll promise you a good time.”

“No thanks.” Yusuke spoke out loud in reply to the manly voice, “I’m straight, thank you very much.”

Hiei turned and raised an eyebrow, obviously questioning Yusuke’s sanity.

“Huh?” Yusuke blinked and actually took in his surroundings for a few seconds, before realizing that the voice had not been directed towards him but to a redheaded girl.

“Why don’t you come with us?”

The questions came from two sleazy looking men, both obviously drunk. Bystanders shook their heads sadly and mumbled sympathetic words for the girl cornered, but none of them tried to help.

“I thought you said you were going to be late?” Hiei asked, “You don’t have the time to be standing around and dawdling.”

“But-!” Yusuke protested, pointing a finger at the girl, “We can’t just leave her!”

Hiei snorted, “We can’t?” he turned on his heel and started to walk, “It’s easy, actually. See, you put one foot in front of the other and—Yusuke!”

Said teen had suddenly charged at the two men, and delivered a couple of good punches to their abdomen.

“Urameshi-kun!” A couple of girls who had been watching squealed.

Yusuke smirked at the two men groaning in pain at his feet, and he smoothed his hair back, “It’s sleaze balls like you two that make this place—”

He never quite got to finish his sentence though, as a loud voice pierced into the silence.

“Yusuke!” Yukimura Keiko borderline screamed, “You’re late!”

“…crap.”

-

Eventually, after Yusuke had finally gotten through Keiko that he had been saving somebody, and no, he wasn’t out with another girl, and no, he was not beating people up—apart from the two that she saw—and yes, he did love her, and yes, he was serious about dating her and no, he wouldn’t be late anymore and yes, he’d go to the school that the village leaders had set up and—

“What?” Yusuke snapped out of his obedient answering mode that he had learned to acquire when dealing with Keiko. “School has nothing to do with it!”

There seemed to be an evil gleam in Keiko’s eyes and she shook her head slowly, “Oh, but I beg to differ, don’t you agree, Minamino-san?”

It was the first time since the girl had been ushered into the Yukimura household and fussed over by Yukina that she had spoken.

She wore a white kimono, woven with yellow butterflies. Her hair was red, and framed her face. She had amazingly green eyes that seemed to sparkle and laugh at everything, even though the girl herself had stayed quiet through Keiko’s whole interrogation of Yusuke.

“Mmm…” The girl mused. “I guess I can see where Yukimura-san is coming from.”

Hiei snorted.

“You disagree, ah…?” She paused, as if waiting for someone to finish her sentence.

“Hiei.” Kuwabara cut in. The teen had been (oddly conveniently) shopping for fish for his cat near Keiko’s house, where Yukina was staying for the day. He had rushed over after Yukina had appeared at Keiko’s side when they were still on the street, and insisted escorting them all home.

“There must be enough men to protect you fair ladies.” He had said, and bowed deeply to Yukina, who blushed and giggled.

Hiei had scowled visibly.

“His name’s Hiei.” Kuwabara repeated.

“Ah, you disagree, Hiei-san?” The girl’s eyes sparkled with mischief and something incomprehensible lay behind them.

“Yes.” Hiei answered.

“I’m quite sorry then.” she answered smoothly, “I guess you’ll just have to make do with being wrong.”

Keiko and Yukina both bit back a gasp. Kuwabara gaped; his jaw almost hitting the floor. Yusuke smirked, before going into convulsions of laughter.

No one had ever openly disagreed with Hiei, much less talked back to him. It was new and oddly…entertaining, in a weird way.

And then, Hiei did something completely unlike himself. Just like that, he had fallen head over heels in love.

-

Please tell me you’re kidding.” Yusuke half pleaded, half mumbled warily through his cup of tea. It was the third time in two days they were having this conversation, and as much as Yusuke liked doing irrational stuff, there were certain things in life that should not be done by certain people. Period.

And one of them was definitely Hiei professing his love to some random girl they had met on the street for a grand total of five seconds.

She was hot though.

Keiko. Keiko. Keiko.

“Anyways,” Yusuke mumbled, “You’re not going to find her, even if you try. Our village isn’t that small. That was the first time we’ve even seen here, and we’ve lived here all of our lives.”

“Maybe we weren’t paying attention.” was Hiei’s excuse.

Yusuke blinked, and raised an eyebrow, “Uh, were we looking at the same girl? Trust me, I would definitely remember seeing her.”

Keiko. Keiko. Keiko.

Yusuke shrugged quickly, “I mean, not that she’s hot or anything. Uh, I—um, hey! A squirrel!” he pointed randomly out a shop window.

It was Hiei’s turn to raise an eyebrow.

“Fine.” Yusuke grumbled, “You know what, fine. We’ll go find her. And when you can’t—” he poked Hiei in the chest, hard, “—don’t come crying to me.”

-

Later, Hiei decided that he was the luckiest guy in the world. Only five minutes into searching for the red-haired girl, did he find the best lead possible.

“Ah, Hiei-kun!” His father’s friend had come to visit his father, and ran into Hiei just as Hiei was leaving, and he was entering. “Where are you going in such a hurry?”

“Enma-san.” Hiei bowed politely, “I’m looking for someone.” he cut straight to the point, hoping to avoid the long series of questions that would eventually lead him to the same answer anyways.

“Oh?” the man smiled, “Who?”

“A girl.” Hiei answered quickly, partially because of the urge of finding her, and partially to save himself from embarrassment.

The man gave a knowing smile, “Ah…pretty one, is she?”

“Red hair. Green eyes.” Hiei replied. “She has this knowing—”

“—look, right?” Enma finished. “I think I know her. Well, my son does.”

“Koenma-kun?” Hiei’s heart did a flip in his stomach, “Do you know where I can find him?”

“He should be at home.” Enma smiled at Hiei’s retreating back, “Best of luck to you!” he called after the teen. A couple seconds later, he frowned. “Did he call him a girl?”

-

“Koenma-kun!”

Koenma stuck his head out from between a book, and his eyes widened briefly, “Hiei-kun!” he exclaimed, “You don’t usually come looking for me.”

“Do you know a girl?” Hiei cut to the chase.

“A girl?” Koenma blinked, “I know more than one, I think.”

“Red hair, green—”

“Oh, her.” A small smirk made its way onto Koenma’s face, “What do you want with her?”

Hiei flushed. “Just tell me where she lives, will you?”

If Hiei had been paying a bit more attention, he might have found it a bit odd that Koenma had stressed the gender of the girl, just a little too much.

-

“It’s you. Hiei-san, am I right?” the girl straightened from her task of watering a rose bush that grew on the side of her house.

Hiei opened his mouth, but then closed it quickly, when finding no words would come.

She smiled, and stepped around him, reaching for another tub of water.

Hiei grabbed her hand.

Her eyes flew up to his face, and slowly, she pulled her hand out of his grasp.

“I’m a guy.”

Hiei could only gape.

“I’m Minamino Shuuichi.” The teen straightened and set the empty tub down, “I’m completely male, you see.” an amused look fluttered about his face, “Don’t be embarrassed.” he smiled warmly, “It happens all the time.”

Shuuichi tilted his head thoughtfully, and a slow chuckle escaped from his lips, “I am gay though, if you’re still interested.” he joked. He then bowed politely, “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to—”

“I am.”

“Excuse me?” The redheaded teen inquired, and picked up another empty tub.

“I am interested.” Hiei swallowed, “That is, if you are.”

Shuuichi paused, and for the first—and last—time, Hiei saw a slightly confused look cross his face. It was only there for a minute, before it dissolved into a bright smile.

“Alright.” he answered genuinely. “So you’re still interested. And your parents, Hiei-san? Your friends? What about your reputation? Are they interested?”

Hiei reached forward, and grabbed the teen by the shoulders. “It doesn’t matter if they are,” he whispered in a hoarse voice, “it only matters if you are. Please,” his voice dropped below a whisper, “please say you are, Minamino-san.”

“Kurama.” the teen answered after what seemed like forever, “Call me Kurama.”

-

And that night, Hiei did. Under the brightly lit stars, where they both had their first time with each other, Hiei finally spoke.

“Kurama.” his voice came out in pants, and an arm was draped protectively across the red-haired beauty, “Did anyone ever tell you that you’re so amazingly feminine?”

Kurama sat up, and he brushed the pieces of grass off his bare back before pulling on his shirt, “You certainly know how to kill the mood, don’t you?”

Hiei gave something between a smirk and a smile and reached out for Kurama’s arm, and pulled him back down, “That’s okay,” he whispered, “Because I have you here to create it again.”

“You’re such a sap.” Kurama tapped him lightly on the nose.

“And you,” Hiei’s voice stayed in a whisper, “are incredibly gorgeous.”

Kurama’s smile, if possible, widened even further, “And you,” he paused, as if searching for the right word, “don’t smile enough.”

Hiei sat up in protest, “You haven’t known me long enough to—”

Kurama smiled and touched their foreheads together, “These lines,” he traced the furrows of Hiei’s brow with a finger, causing Hiei to shiver, despite the heat of the summer nights, “you only get them if you frown too much.”

“There’s never been a real reason to smile.” Hiei whispered, as by way of explanation.

“And there is now?”

“Yeah.” Hiei nodded slowly, “You.”
