“I said I live here. I’m a prisoner,” Sasuke replied casually. His voice was very calm.
“You…you’re a prisoner?! What did…what did you do? How long is your sentence?” Naruto asked slowly, unsure if he should even be asking. He didn’t want Sasuke to suddenly snap at him…but he had to know.
“I’m here for murdering my family, and my sentence is life plus ten,”
“You…you didn’t kill your family…I…” Naruto trailed off, not wanting to believe what Sasuke had just said. Sasuke seemed…calm and definitely not the type to kill someone, much less his entire family. It couldn’t be true, right?
“I didn’t do it,” Sasuke responded calmly, and Naruto looked up at him, wide-eyed. Every prisoner said that, right? They all say ‘I didn’t do it’, because none of them wanted to admit the awful truth. Yet, why did Sasuke seem so different?
“I know you hear that a lot around here. But I didn’t kill my family. I loved my parents very much. They owned a company. Madara industries, I’m sure you’ve heard of it,” Sasuke paused, and Naruto nod his head. Everyone heard of Madara industries! It was one of the biggest companies in the word!
“I have an older brother, Uchiha Itachi. He is…was…the black sheep of the family. I still loved him, of course, and I looked up to him. He was the older child, so he would be the heir to the company. However, my father didn’t want him to be the heir to the company, so he named me heir. When I turned twenty-one, I would get the company. Yet, a few weeks before my twenty-first birthday, I was coming home from a friends house, and when I got to my mansion, it was silent. Walking through the rooms, I found my mother and father on the floor, dead. On the floor was a black cloak with red clouds on it. As I was picking it up, the cops burst in,”
“But…you were at a friends house! That’s an alibi!” Naruto replied.
“No…my friend…told the cops I wasn’t there. My only guess is, that my brother paid him. After that, he fled. No one heard from him after that. I just don't understand why he did that. He's not the type to take money like that,"
“But-”
“Naruto! It’s time to go! Come on! Let’s get out of here! I’m getting nervous!” Sakura said, calling for her friend from quite a few feet away. She saw Naruto talking to a prisoner, but didn’t want to get any closer.
“S…sure, Sakura-chan! One minute!” Naruto called back.
“I’ve got to go. It was…nice talking to you, Sasuke,” Naruto frowned, turning heel to catch up with Sakura.
“You too, Naruto,”
“Ah, not bad at all…Very interesting,” Naruto replied. Kakashi could tell something was wrong with his son. Naruto was always so happy-go-lucky. And right now, he seemed a bit down about something.
“Something wrong?” Kakashi asked, taking a seat next to his son.
“No, nothing,” Naruto smiled brightly, before putting his dish into the sink, and heading up to his room.
Naruto found himself thinking about Sasuke every day. He didn’t exactly know what it was. He cared about Sai, he wasn’t going to lie about that, but the feeling in itself with Sasuke felt so much more real…He didn’t exactly know what it was.
“Oi, Naruto! Did you finish everything for graduation?” Sakura asked. They had met at a resturante for lunch, something they did quite often.
“Yeah, I did, what about you?” Naruto asked, not caring. Well, he did care, but his mind just wasn’t on it today.
“Of course! And I’m staying at the university to get my masters in biology, so after three more years of schooling, I can move on to med school. Have you decided what you want to do yet?” Sakura asked.
“No, actually…I have no clue. I’m staying at the university too, I just don’t know what I want to study,” Naruto shrugged, frowning.
“Naruto, you have to figure it out! There is no masters’ degree for liberal arts! So what are you going to do?!” She asked. She had always been concerned about her friend. Naruto was extremely smart, and he’d be graduating with straight A’s, but Sakura was concerned about what he’d do about it.
“I have to go, Sakura-chan, I have somewhere to be right now,” He said as he stood up, and left money for the bill and a tip.
“Wha…what? Where are you going?” She asked. She knew Naruto’s schedule quite well. It was Thursday afternoon, and Naruto had no classes. She knew he didn’t have a date, or else he would have told her about it.
“To prison,” He responded casually, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“What?!” Sakura’s shriek tore through the resturante.
“Who could it possibly be?” Sasuke asked himself as the guard opened the door for him.
Less violent prisoners were able to talk to their visitors without a glass and phone between them. They were brought into a room, with chairs and tables. The prisoner sat on one side, while the visitor sat on the other. Visitations were allowed at certain time of the day, for a certain amount each time. Right now, Sasuke would get half an hour with his visitor.
His eyes widened when he saw his visitor sitting down, calmly smiling up at him.
“Na…Naruto!” Sasuke gasped.
“Hi Sasuke,”
“You’re allowed thirty minutes,” The guard replied, moving to leave the room. There were already two guards in the room, so there was no need for him to be there as well.
“Naruto, what are you doing here?” Sasuke asked, taking as seat.
“What the heck does it look like to you?! I’m here to visit, what else?” Naruto laughed gently. He handed Sasuke a small bag.
“What’s this?” Sasuke asked, peering into the bag.
“Some food. I figure it’s better than the stuff you eat here,” Naruto shrugged.
“Thanks,” Sasuke said slowly, trying to hide his happiness. It is true. The food they served at the prison was absolute crap. And the food Naruto brought was hot, and looked delicious. Sasuke pulled out the food and set it onto the table.
“So…why are you here? I know you’re here to visit…but why?” Sasuke asked as he picked at the food, sighing in happiness at the taste.
“Sasuke…I asked where you lived because I wanted to see you again…but when you said you lived here, I really didn’t know what to do…so these past, what, six weeks, I’ve been thinking…and now I’m here to see you again, because I missed you,”
“You don’t even know me. We didn’t even talk for that long, how could you miss me?”
“I dunno, but I felt some sort of…connection. And…and I believe what you say. I believe that you aren’t the one who killed your family. I believe that it really was your brother,” Naruto spoke in a low tone, hoping no one else aside from Sasuke would hear him.
“That’s…a lot to say, Naruto. A connection? To me? Alright, and you believed me, hmm? Well, that’s comforting, but what does it really mean? You can’t do anything about it, now can you?” Sasuke asked. He was going to be in jail until he died, and he already accepted it.
“Yeah, a connection, bastard. If you weren’t in prison, I’d say we could go on a date, or something, and see where it leads. But you’re here, right?” Sasuke nod his head at this.
“Yeah…and that sucks…” Naruto sighed, out of things to say.
“Uzumaki Naruto, your time is up, I’ll escort you out,” The bodyguard said, and Naruto stood up.
“Bye Naruto,” Sasuke replied.
“Bye Sasuke, I’ll come by again soon to visit you.” Naruto smiled sadly, following the guard out the door.
Suddenly, Sasuke wasn’t hungry anymore.
He was going to be in prison for the rest of his live. And now, more than ever, he was afraid. He was afraid of what was going to happen to Naruto.
“Hey son, where have you been going the past few weeks?” Kakashi asked one day, two weeks before graduation when Naruto was coming home from visiting Sasuke. He had noticed that Naruto was always home late from his last class of the day, whatever day it was, and he decided to finally ask his son about it.
“I…was at school, doing some research…since it’s almost graduation, a lot of papers are due,” Naruto felt his heart pounding. Would it really be a good idea if Kakashi found out about everything?!
“Really? You were there quite late, you sure that’s what you’ve been doing?” Kakashi asked, wary of his sons answer.
“That is what I’ve been doing! Now I…gotta go study!” Naruto yelled, running passed his father, and up to his room. Kakashi sighed as he laid his eyes on a booklet. He picked it up. It was the school catalog of classes and majors. It explained what students would have to take to get their masters in a specific subject.
Kakashi flipped to the page with the bookmark.
“Criminal justice?” He asked himself.
“How…how did you know that?” Naruto asked quickly, shocked. He hadn’t told anyone about it yet!
“I found this, you must have dropped it in a hurry,” Kakashi said, sliding the booklet over to his son.
“Oh…well, yeah, I was thinking about it,” Naruto shrugged.
“That’s great! What do you want to do, exactly? There are many different jobs in criminal justice,” Kakashi explained.
“Well, after I get my masters I was thinking of going to law school,” Naruto replied, not meeting Kakashi’s eyes. He wasn’t sure whether or not his father would approve, or what he would think at all. Naruto wasn’t even sure if he’d make a good lawyer or not, but he wanted to try, for Sasuke.
“A lawyer? My own son? A lawyer?!” Kakashi gasped. He was so proud.
“Yeah…” Naruto smiled gently.
“That’s great, I think you’ll make an amazing lawyer!” Kakashi replied truthfully.
“Really?!” Naruto smiled, standing up from his chair to hug his father. He was so happy he approved!
“Yes, of course, but what exactly brought this on?” Kakashi asked as Naruto sat back down.
“I…met someone. I kind of…thought he was interesting,” Naruto replied. Now he was finally going to tell him about Sasuke.
“Oh? Really? Who is he? Does he live nearby?” Kakashi asked. Since Naruto broke up with Sai, he never really even looked at another person, not wanting to pursue another relationship.
“Well…I met him when I went to prison. We spent most of the time talking to one another. Before I left I asked him where he lived, so we could hang out or something, but it turns out he is a prisoner,”
“Ah, a prisoner? You sure pick out some strange people to fall for,”
“OI! I do not!” Naruto replied, defending himself.
“What about Sai? He was strange, wasn’t he? He made the excuse to sketch you naked so he could have sex with you,”
“How…how did you find that out?! Who told you!?” Naruto asked. The only person he told about that was Kiba! Then again…Kiba had a big mouth.
“Fi…fine! But we all date one weirdo in-”
“Karin was a psycho too,” Kakashi added.
“Well, yeah, I know th-”
“Gaara was a bit weird too…he came here when you were sleeping. And then he undressed you and-”
“ALRIGHT!” Naruto shouted, shutting Kakashi up.
“I get it, okay? It’s just…this guy said he didn’t do it…and I believe him,”
“So you like someone who is in prison for something he didn’t do?” Kakashi asking, raising an eyebrow. Everyone in prison said that! But the fact that his blond son actually believed him said quite a lot. Naruto was a good judge of character.
“Well, I don’t know if I like him, but I felt some sort of connection to him,” Naruto responded.
“Everyone in prison say they didn’t do whatever crime they committed,” Kakashi replied, testing him,
“I know…but…I just feel as though he’s telling the truth. I don’t know, there’s something very different about him,”
“So I’m guessing you want to become a lawyer, to free him?” Kakashi asked.
“Yeah, it’s a long-shot, but I think I can do it! Sure, it’ll take about six years…but I can do it!” Naruto replied, smiling.
“Six years? Getting your masters should take four,” Kakashi replied.
“Well, normally, but not if I take twelve credits every summer, and eighteen every semester,”
“That’s a lot of work,”
“Yeah, but the less time I take the better, I don’t want Sasuke to be there any longer than he has to be,”
“Wait! Uchiha Sasuke?! You’re talking about Uchiha Sasuke?!”
“Yeah, why?”
“Naruto, that’s…going to be a lot more difficult than you think…His brother is powerful,”
“I know, but I believe in myself. I’m going to tell Sasuke tomorrow when I go visit him. I’ll give him my word, and that’s something I never go back on.”
