AN: So this is supposed to happen sometime in the not so near future and it was vaguely based on a prompt by holycitygirl.
Sometimes George really does deserve to get smacked in the head. So, an aortic valve replacement, difficult, yeah, but not impossible. And he’s good, anyone will tell you that, he’s really good. Izzie knows this and wants to seriously inflict some damage. His defeatist tendencies, while not as pronounced as they used to be, still get to her like whoa. She’d scream and call him on it if they weren’t, well, if they weren’t George & Izzie.
He knows she’s mad and she knows he knows she’s mad and that upsets him and it’s all very complicated. And they’re angry that it’s complicated because it shouldn’t be, it didn’t use to be.
It was easier when they were just friends. Really good friends who got each other, who understood what it was like not belonging somewhere. It’s weird, that two people like them would end up together, not because they’re so different but because… well, yeah, because they’re so different.
She’s the head cheerleader type, pretty, beautiful, gorgeous, all those adjectives that made boys go weak in the knees and got her through med school. He’s not so much with the gorgeous, really, not even now that his mathelete days are way behind him and he’s been known to score some pretty hot dates in the past.
But the thing is, they were there when no one thought they would, and [with a few bumps in the way they made it. Together.
It’s not a match made in heaven, not even one that makes sense to anyone, not even those who know them. Or maybe, especially not to those who know them, but whatever, it makes sense to them and that’s what’s important, right? Right?
So it’s a little incestuous, in a very vague, unspecified way, and it’s odd to see them being so George and Izzie together and knowing they are, actually George and Izzie now, and seriously, how are they still together, after everything that happened?
They don’t even know it themselves, and they probably will never know, but it’s okay. They don’t need to know how if they know why. And why? Because they love each other.
Even if Izzie’s been known to snap and say Shut up, George on frequent basis and George sometimes goes and hides on the backyard, when the baking gets out of control and she’s prone to emotional outbursts.
Even if sometimes, when Izzie’s had a rough day and she’s being particularly bitchy, some people [who ere there when it all went down call her a marriage-ruinning skank behind her back.
Even if George got a little heartbroken when he had to break Callie’s heart.
But. Whatever, Because the bad things are not what makes this thing they have [love so damn great, it’s the good things, the great things, the knowing each other better than they know themselves and the knowing when the other one needs a hug.
They were friends and they were lovers and that works for them, now, it’s worked for a long, long time and they cant be grateful enough for it. Except, well, sometimes they think it was easier when they were only friends, because staying mad at each other, now that they are George & Izzie in ever way that counts? Well, that’s pretty damn hard.
