Chapter 1 - The Break Up
Nicole looked at Gil; pain was etched all over her face. She couldn't believe her ears. What the hell had gotten into him? Did he just think she was Sara? No that couldn't be right. But he did just call her that. It wasn't like Gil. And it hurt like a son of a bitch that he called her Sara. She pushed Gil away and got out of bed, "Gil, do you realize what you just did?" she asked frowning as she got dressed.
The room went silent, an eerie silent – a tense silent. She pulled on her shirt as she made her way to the door, Gil followed as he did up his house coat, "Nicole wait, I can explain."
"Explain!" she said turning around, "Gil, you called me a different name! You can't explain that!"
"Nicole I can." Gil said trying to stop her.
She shook her head, as she pulled on her jacket, "No you can't. You called me Sara! Is there something you're not telling me? Tell me before I walk out this door, Gil!"
Gil was at a loss for words. He didn't even know that he had called her Sara. He didn't mean to – not at all. Let alone it hurt him that Nicole was mad like this.
Nicole looked at him with tears forming in her eyes; "I knew it. You can't let me in that much can you?" She said and opened the door, "Think about it Gil. You knew damn well what you did. And you can't even think of an explanation for it." She said as she stepped out the door.
She stopped seeing him standing in the doorway, "Just remember one thing, I'm tired of you not stating the truth. I've tried all I can imagine for you to let me in. You won't, or you can't." She said and then left for her car.
She got in her car and drove away. She wasn't even sure where the hell she was going to go. She could just go home but she knew she'd just go insane there. She couldn't believe what had just happened. She leaned over and turned on the radio. And she listened to it as it filled the silence that was in her car. It happened to be: Shut Up and Drive by Chely Wright.
Shut up and drive,
You don't know what you're talkin about.
He's not the one,
You oughtta know that by now.
You've got one of those hearts,
Thats keeps changin your mind.
Your heart has a way of making you stay,
So shut up and drive.
She thought for a second as she hummed along, with tears in her eyes. Maybe it was right. Maybe Gil wasn't the one. It wasn't the first time they had fought like this. And every time they did she would leave like this, and go out somewhere, anywhere, to think it over. And yet she always came back, because she felt that she was in the wrong.
Don't look in the mirror,
He might have look in his eyes.
The one thats so strong,
It strangles your will to survive.
He's mastered the art of lookin sincere;
His eyes have a way.
Of making you stay don't look in the mirror.
His eyes did have a way of making her feel guilty, but she thought that maybe it was because she loved him. Was it really love? And she wasn't even sure that she did love him. He couldn't even let her in enough to know what went on most of the time. And his eyes did have a way of making her stay. But she felt that this time was the last and only time they would fight.
I'm the voice you never listen to,
And I had to break your heart to make you see.
That he's the one who will be missin you,
And you'll only miss the man that you wanted him to be.
Tears started to fall down her cheeks, it was over and it was over for good. They did have good times. But like any they had their bad times and they seemed to be the ones that filled her mind the most.
Turn the radio on,
To drown out the sound of goodbye.
Blink back the tears;
Show me you still got your pride.
Just get yourself lost,
In a sad country song.
Those guys who think they know just what to say,
Turn the radio on.
Nicole knew it was goodbye now. He called her the wrong name for the last time. Before she knew it, she was just outside the city. Stopping on the side of the road, she rested her head down on the steering wheel. She couldn't go back now. Not after all what had happened.
She sighed and sat up straight, and wiped her tears away. She had put her heart and soul on the line, and they were both ripped to shreds now. She had tried all she could imagine, she had begged and pleaded in true loves fashion. But she had pride and she was taking that for a ride now.
The more she thought of it the more it made her angry. Gil did not only hurt her, she was angry. She lost the game, she guessed she did her best to win the part, but now she was leaving him with what was left of her heart. Her cell phone ringing in her jacket pocket broke the silence of the car. She pulled it out of her jacket pocket and looked at the call display. It was Gil.
Angrily she threw the cell phone on the passenger seat. If he really had something good to say she would let him do all the talking to her voice mail. She sighed and started the car again, putting it in drive she floored it off the side of the road, onto the road. She wasn't sure where the hell she was going to go. But it was anywhere but home.
By the time her cell phone rang again, she had the music cranked, going nowhere in particular. The song that she had cranked was: Kiss This by Aaron Tippin. She turned, grabbed her cell phone off the seat and looked at the call display, "What the hell?" she asked herself as she turned down the music and answered her phone, "Yeah?"
"Where the hell are you?" Carolyn's voice rang into the phone.
Nicole sighed, "Did Gil call you?"
"Yeah, he's worried. You didn't answer your cell phone."
Nicole felt like hanging up the phone. But decided against it, "Well I don't care."
"What?"
"I said I don't care. Listen, I'll come over."
"Uh yeah, that would be a good idea. At least he'll know where you are."
"Oh no. I ain't talking to him."
"All right, what's going on?"
"I'll tell you when I come over."
"All right, I won't tell him you're at my house. I'll see you then." Carolyn said and hung up.
Nicole hung up her cell phone and threw it back on the passenger seat. At least now she had a destination to go to. As the music changed over she cranked it loud, just before it became distorted. It happened to be her theme song at the point; My Give A Damn's Busted by Jo Dee Messina.
As she sang along, she felt the hurt and pain that Gil had caused her, turn to anger. She believed she had every right to be pissed right now.
So many thoughts went through her head, she wasn't going to look back. But there was no way in hell was he going to get involved in her work. She was going to stay right there, and so what if he was her supervisor. She wasn't going to stand any more of his bullshit. He was going to find what was left of their relationship in a cloud of dust. She had finally seen the light. She had her pride and she was keeping what was left of it.
He had filled up her head with so many lies. He had bent and twisted her heart till it snapped inside. She was no way in hell giving it a second try. He could do what he could, say that he was wrong, cry all night long. She was no way in hell planning to take him back. She really did want to care; she did want to feel something. But like the song that was playing. Her give a damn was busted.
If he liked Sara that much, he could go to her. Nicole hurt like a son of a bitch but she was not taking him back. That was what she decided as she pulled into Jim and Carolyn's driveway.
Before she even got a chance to shut the car off, Carolyn opened the door of the house and walked out. As soon as she saw Nicole she ran to her. Nicole shut off the car and got out. Carolyn looked at Nicole. She noticed that Nicole had red eyes, "What the fuck happened?"
"I'll tell you inside."
"Ah no. Tell me now!" Carolyn stated as Jim stood at the door.
Nicole sighed, "You really want to know?" she asked walking towards the house.
"Uh yeah! That's why I asked."
"I really rather tell you inside." Nicole answered as she got to the steps.
Once inside Nicole threw herself down on the couch and brought her knees up to her chest, "First off… I want to say thanks for letting me come over." Nicole said softly.
Carolyn sat down next to her as Jim sat down in his recliner, "What happened?" Jim asked, looking at Nicole.
"Gil called me Sara." Nicole answered.
Carolyn raised her eyebrows, "He didn't."
"Yeah, while… uh…" Nicole replied choking back the tears.
Both Jim and Carolyn got the hint, "Fuck, Gil messed up." Jim commented.
Nicole looked at Jim, "You think?" she asked, it was obvious she was still hurt. And she had every right to be; "I left him, Jim. And I don't want to go home right now."
"You can stay here as long as you want! You shouldn't be alone right now." Jim told her.
"Yeah, listen. If you want I can go talk to Gil for you." Carolyn offered.
Nicole shook her head, as her cell phone rang again. She pulled it out of her pocket and looked at the call display, "Fuck…" she mumbled. She put it back in her pocket; "You don't have to. If he wants to talk, he can damn well fucking face me – The last thing I ever fucking expected out of him was to call me Sara, guys!"
"Listen," Jim started again, "He has his nose so far down a microscope that he doesn't know anything about relationships."
Nicole shook his head, "I don't know… I didn't even give him a chance to explain…"
Carolyn cut her off, "There is nothing to explain. What you did was right, you have every right to leave him. He fucked up. And what he did was fucking wrong, which can't be undone. Give him a fucking quarter so he can call someone who cares."
Nicole looked at her, and smiled, "Your right."
"I always am!" Carolyn smiled back at her.
/The Break Up/
It was the next morning, and Carolyn and Nicole were on a mission in the lab. They were headed to Gil's office. They were ready to tear Gil a new asshole. They marched into his office and he looked up, shocked to see both of them. And the look on Nicole's face, "Don't give me that look, Grissom." Nicole stated. She only called him Grissom when they first met.
Before he even had a chance to answer Carolyn started on him, "You fucking called her someone else in bed, Griss. And it just happened to be Sara? What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Wait just a damn minute." Gil said standing up.
Nicole took a step towards his desk as Carolyn closed the door, "What I am guessing is you think we're just gonna kiss and make up?" Nicole asked, "Listen, I want everything I left at your place. And while your at it, you can just take your precious Sara back. Since you like to call me her in bed!"
"Nicole I said I can explain!" Gil started.
But he didn't have a chance, cause Carolyn jumped in; "There is no excuse, Gil! That is something you don't do. Have you ever thought of what it might have done?"
"First off Grissom. You and Sara had something going before I came here. I knew it. Second off, you are so wrapped up in your work, that you never even noticed what I did," Nicole said putting him in his place, right up in his face. Chewing on him like a bulldog on a bone, "You know what Grissom, you are a son of a bitch for thinking I have decided to stay. After you called me Sara, that was the last straw."
Carolyn was shocked, well not really. She knew it was in Nicole. She was just glad it wasn't her at the receiving end of it all, "Gil, you should get your fucking eyes and memory checked cause last time I looked, Nicole is clearly not Sara. Have you ever thought that you suck at relationships, of every kind – you have the emotional I.Q of zero, all you care about is your job."
Even though the door to his office was closed a crowd started to gather around. In the front row, it was Catherine, Sara, Nick and Warrick. They were shocked; it looked like Gil was paying for his every sin, at the hands of two of his CSIs.
Nicole looked at him, after calling him everything under the sun. And just when he thought both of them were done, they turned and faced him again, and let him have it again, "Listen. I have one last thing for you. A quote: 'Why don't you kiss, kiss this. And I don't mean on my rosy red lips. Me and you, oh we are through. And there's only one thing left for you to do. You just come over here one last time, pucker up and close your eyes. And kiss this a goodbye.'"
"And if you didn't know," Carolyn added, "That was from, Aaron Tippin." She said and the two CSIs walked out the door.
The crowd was still standing around the door as Nicole and Carolyn walked through. They all looked at Nicole and Carolyn then at Grissom whose eyes were wide with shock.
Nicole turned to Carolyn; "I owe you a coffee."
"That you do." Carolyn answered.
