Prologue

Johnny got out of the church just in time. He went to court and got off with a month in jail. Ponyboy goes to see him every day. They’d get an hour a day to talk. What happens when Ponyboy falls in love with his best friend? R&R

Ponyboy and Johnny

Chapter one

“Okay. Let’s start with Mr. Cade. Please step up here, son.” The old judge said smiling kindly at Johnny. Johnny nervously went over to the stand. I sat at a long table in front of everyone with Dally and Two-Bit. I put my head in my hands hoping Johnny would be okay. “What happened?” she asked looking at him. Johnny was wearing his best outfit that he got out of his house in the middle of the night. He had his hair slicked back as he always did.

“Well…” he said in a low, scared voice, “Ponyboy, Dally and I went to the Dingo to catch a movie. When we got there we sat behind these two Socs. Dally started to bug them for fun. Soon he left after I… I told him to stop. The girls asked if we’d sit with them. Pony and I… We didn’t know what could go wrong. Two-Bit-I…I mean Keith joined us. He seemed to be hitting it off with on of the Soc girls. We left wit the girl taking them to Keith’s house to get his car. There boyfriend drove up behind us slowly. They were drunk. One came out and fought with Keith about being with his girl. The other one… Bob… The one I killed. He just stood there laughing. I had already seen him before. He beat me up a few months ago giving me my cuts on my face. He almost killed me that day. Ever since then I’ve been caring a blade in my back pocket. I grabbed it thinking he might jump me again. I didn’t do nothin’ to him the first time so I thought this time he would kill me. Soon the Socs got back in his car with the two girls following. Later that night I was hangin’ in an empty lot when Pony came running at me. We ran for a minute when I stopped and asked him what had happened. He told me that him and Darry had a fight. We decided to walk to the park and back. When we got there the Socs pulled up. They got out and started to taunt us. ‘You know what a greaser is?’” Johnny started. My heart stopped as I started remembering it all. “’White trash with long, greasy hair.’ Then he dumped alcohol on Ponyboy. Ponyboy looked back at them and said, ‘You know what a Soc is? White trash with Mustangs and Madras.’ Then he spat at him. The Socs chased us to the fountain. Four of them were pushing Pony in, dunking his head. Two of them kicked me and told me to stay put. I could hear Ponyboy screaming. I had to help him they were killing him. They were going to beat me up. Like they did before. Worse.” Johnny now had tears running down his face. He was staring at Randy with wide eyes. “Hell I couldn’t let them done that again. I used to be tough before them. So, I ran over and stabbed Bob. The others ran when I did…”

“That will be all Johnny. You can sit down now.” The judge said still smiling kindly at Johnny. After Johnny she called me up. Then Dally, then Two-Bit. After everyone went up and said the SAME thing, she asked for everyone’s attention. “Well if it were up to me Johnny Cade would go home free of all charges. But he committed manslaughter and can’t go without punishment. Johnny Cade I sentence you to twenty-nine days in jail for manslaughter.”

That was three weeks ago. Johnny only has a week left in jail. I’ve gone to see him everyday. He hasn’t changed at all. He was still the same shy Johnny. Dally came to see him three times a week. Johnny and I had an hour a day to talk about anything. We would sit at a small table and drink Cokes. We got closer every day. Soon I knew everything about the older boy. Even about his birthmark on the back of his leg. I started to feel strange… I wanted me and Johnny to be more than friend…

I fell in love with Johnny…
