You’re My Fairytale
Chapter 1
Too Ordinary
Ring, ring ring, rang the alarm clock breaking the silence of the early morning hours.
“Wake up Kagome or your going to be late for school” her mom’s voice floated to her room from downstairs.
“mmmm…five more minutes” mumbled sixteen year old Kagome from under the covers. No sooner than she had said that, her cat Buyo jumped up and landed hard on her stomach, Kagome woke up with a start and glared at her cat who looked up at her innocently.
“Oh forget it” she said as she reached out to shut off her annoying alarm clock.
“Welcome to another day in the life of Kagome Higourashi, the ‘too ordinary’ girl” she muttered to herself as she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
After taking a bath, slipping into her uniform and combing her hair, she stood in front of the big dressing table mirror to assess how she looked.
Kagome was an ordinary teenage girl, as normal as they come. She had long raven black hair which she usually braided. Her most favorite feature were her eyes, they were a deep honey brown just like her father’s. She went downstairs for breakfast after dumping some books into her backpack.
“Good morning mom” she said to her mother as she sat down at the dining table.
“Good morning Kagome, did you sleep well?” asked her mother as she set down a plate of scrambled egg and a glass of orange juice in front of Kagome.
Kagome glanced at the small table clock on the kitchen counter and was alarmed to find that it was already ten minutes to eight, meaning that if she didn’t hurry, really hurry, she would be late for school.
She quickly stuffed her breakfast in her mouth and to prevent herself from choking, gulped down the orange juice. She then grabbed her bag, waved goodbye to her mom and went outside to the shed where her bike was parked.
She dug in her pocket for the cycle keys and finally fished them out, she put her backpack in the front basket and got on, thinking about how much her legs were going to hurt as she had to pedal real fast to reach the school’s front gates before the second bell rang.
Sango looked quite pretty, her brownish black hair was tied up in a ponytail. Sango was very strong, this was because she had been attending martial arts classes ever sice she was five years old. Sango had a lot of friends but she seemed to like it best when she was with Kagome who seemed to be her special friend.
“Sorry woke up late” said Kagome yawning.
“Well you better snap out of your sleep trance, we have PE in the first period” said Sango looking cheerful.
Sango loved PE and gym and anything else that had to do with physical exertion. This was just the opposite of Kagome. She groaned, Kagome wasn’t good at sports, she was always picked last for any team and she absolutely despised the big rope hanging in the gym which they had to climb.
“Well, well, well, look who it is, the Higourashi girl” said a sneering voice from behind, Sango and Kagome turned and saw Kikyo, the most popular girl in Tama High School, standing there with her two best friends, Yura and Tsubaki.
“It’s amazing how someone could look so bad, I never thought it humanly possible, but bravo, you’ve outdone yourself” said Kikyo in the same sneering tone and her friends started cackling like the good posse they were.
“Come on Kagome, it’s time for class” said Sango pulling Kagome towards the gymnasium locker room, leaving Kikyo and her friends to glare after them.
The PE coach had made her run around the whole gym ten times because she couldn’t go higher than a few inches on the rope and then she got yelled at by her biology teacher because she forgot to hand in her homework, a diagram on the human brain, and to top it all off, she had to make a speech on road safety during English period which she totally messed up as all the stares her classmates were giving her made her pass out.
She was sitting in the cafeteria, grateful that there were only three periods left for the day to get over, Study hall, art and math. Kagome wasn’t exactly a straight A student but she did manage to come under the top ten in her class.
“So you’re going to the archery club today right?” asked Sango, placing her empty milk carton on the table.
“Yeah, I have to work today” said Kagome, cheering up at the mention of archery. She absolutely adored the way the arrows go whizzing through the air before they hit their mark. Kagome was extremely talented at archery, another something which she had inherited from her father, that’s what her mom told her anyway.
Kagome’s father left them after Souta was born because he had to go to some distant country, when Kagome was six years old they got the news that her father had died in an accident. Her mom cried a lot for the next few days, but Kagome hadn’t known him at all and so she didn’t cry hardly as much. Her train of thought was abruptly interrupted by a shriek from Sango.
“You pervert! Didn’t I tell you never to do that again!” she screamed at a boy standing in front of their table.
“Kagome sighed, “Here we go again” she said as she heard Sango hurl a few more insults at Miroku, who had brushed her rear with his hand.
“No Sango, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it” He tried to explain in vain.
Miroku was one of the most popular guys in school and also the weirdest, but what was really strange was the fact that almost all the girls were attracted to him and his playboy charm just like bugs to a bright light.
Finally managing to scare him off, Sango sat back down in a huff.
“It’s so obvious he likes you Sango, why don’t you just go out with him” said Kagome.
“No, I would rather have my tongue nailed to this table” she said, clearly still angry.
“Awww, it’s sweet the way he keeps coming behind you” said Kagome smirking.
“’Behind’ being the operative word” said Sango and the both of them started laughing.
Just then someone passed by their table and Kagome stopped laughing at once. It was Sean Youkai, the cutest guy in all of Tama High school, who Kagome was totally crushing on.
“Kagome, your drooling” said Sango smirking.
“What, I am not…Sango!” Kagome hit Sango’s arm.
“Look, you’ve had a crush on him ever since school started, why don’t you just go talk to him” said Sango finishing her chocolate pudding.
“No way, I can’t talk to him” said Kagome blushing, “and besides, I heard he has a new girlfriend…Kikyo” she spat out the last word.
“Well anyway, lunch is almost over, let’s head back to class” said Sango getting up, and the both of them headed towards the cafeteria exit.
Kagome and Sango were walking on the sidewalk, Kagome wheeling her bike along.
“Hey, I’ll call you after I get back from my martial arts class” said Sango as they neared a fork in the road, Sango’s house was on the left while Kagome’s shrine was in the opposite direction. Kagome suddenly felt a prickling sensation on her neck and she immediately turned around.
“Something wrong?” asked Sango.
“Oh nothing, bye” said Kagome before heading off in the opposite direction.
Kagome had the feeling that someone was following her and it really creeped her out, she kept turning back, thinking that she was going to see a dark masked figure, but no one was there apart from a few pedestrians going about their daily business.
She heaved a sigh of relief as she entered her house, calling out, “I’m home” as she took off her shoes.
“Welcome back honey” her mom called back from the study.
Kagome went inside the study to find her mom busy at her drawing desk. Her mom was a dress designer and even though she wasn’t very famous, she was still well known in Kagome’s city.
“I really need to finish this design, my deadlines’ in a few days” said her mom.
“I better start getting ready to go to the archery club, I don’t want to keep you from your work” smiled Kagome and went up to her room, quickly threw off her uniform and put on black track pants and a red sleeveless top with the word ‘CuTe!’ written on it in white.
She then tied back her hair in a high ponytail, grabbed her handbag, and with a quick goodbye to her mother, went outside.
She took a bus downtown, where the Hakudoshi archery club was situated. The owner, Hakudoshi was a young man in his twenties with pale blond hair.
“Hey Kagome, always a pleasure to have you here” he said flashing Kagome a grin.
“It’s great being here” said Kagome, grinning back.
“Mom what are you doing here? What about your deadline?” asked Kagome after apologizing to the customer and asking someone else to help her”
“Kagome, I just got a letter from Lyria”
“Wha…?” asked Kagome puzzled, not able to pinpoint the name in her memory.
“The country your father left for” said her mom.
“What did it say?” asked Kagome curiosity finally taking over.
“Your grandfather…he’s coming to Japan for a visit, he’ll be coming to our house for dinner tomorrow” said her mother.
“What! This grandfather who’s been absent from my life for sixteen years wants to have dinner with us tomorrow?” asked Kagome, not able to take in the reality of the situation.
“Yes” said her mother as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, not noticing that Kagome’s eyes had just grown twice their size.
Meanwhile, two people were standing in the dark alley adjacent to the archery club building, peering into the window at the girl in black tracks and the red sleeveless shirt.
Then one of them spoke, “Why did we follow her all day, it was so boring” he drawled on.
“She’s the one” said the other more cold gruff voice, “She’s the princess of Lyria…”
Till next time…
