Chapter 1- Shattered Mirrors of the Soul
Haku watched from inside his mirror as Naruto wept for his fallen comrade.
This was the true way of the shinobi: kill or be killed. It was an empty life style, serving only as a weapon for their master until they were of no use and then, like a broken tool, they were discarded as useless. The blond boy before him didn't understand that; it was a bittersweet lesson he had to learn.
Haku, though, didn't want it to be like that. He wanted to still work as the weapon of his master, to be wanted. You were only worth your use. Zabuza taught him that. As harsh as it was, it gave him purpose; it allowed him to live for something. Anything was better than loneliness.
"Is this the first time you ever lost someone precious to you?" he asked from behind his mask.
Naruto could feel tears prickling the edges of his eyes as he stared at his friend's fallen form. Sasuke… he jumped in front of the senbon that were meant to kill him. Naruto didn't understand why. What had he done to earn the right to continue living? He was the weaker of the two, there was nothing special about him, and he was a demon container to the most feared creature to walk the earth. Why would Sasuke sacrifice his own dream just to make sure Naruto lived?
"W-Why?" he whispered to himself, hoping that his silent friend could give him the answer, but he lied still, not even breathing.
"He sacrificed his life for you. He is a true shinobi worthy of honor," Haku said, though the blond didn't pay attention to him.
"I… I didn't deserve it," Naruto whispered to no one particular.
Finally he couldn't hold back his tears. As they fell, he could feel a different sensation rather than the warm tears he always had whenever he tried to cry. They were cold, like the feel of frigid metal running down his face.
Haku's eyes danced with sadness, but it was not seen due to his hunter-nin mask. He would grieve for the person that could have been his friend, had it not been for the circumstances.
His sadness was replaced with slight curiosity, though, as tears that could only described as liquid silver dripped down his enemy's face and onto the body he was cradling.
The Hyouton wielder was shocked as the blond opened his eyes in sadness, to reveal something that he could only describe as mystifying and beautiful. Upon Naruto's irises were shattered mirrors capable of showing his own broken reflection. His pupils had become like mirrors as well, but remained unbroken. Looking into his pupils was like looking at a mirror; your reflection was there looking back at you. And looking into the iris was like staring into a shattered mirror, a broken reflection staring at back at him.
Naruto's mirror like eyes stared at him for a moment, almost as if peering into his soul. It was unnerving at how it felt to see yourself in your opponent's eyes, so unnerving in fact that Haku had to tear his own eyes away from him. He had never seen what he looked like with the mask on –it made him feel as if he was looking at someone else, someone he wasn't.
"Why?" he heard Naruto whisper again." Why… does it have to be this way?"
"He sacrificed his own dream so that you may live. Please… surrender before I have to shatter my own heart to kill you," he pleaded, it wasn't his nature to murder someone, but it was for Zabuza. They were a threat to his precious person.
Despite everything he said, Haku couldn't bring himself to look at his opponent again, he wouldn't be able to do what he needed to do if he looked into those eyes again.
What are those eyes? he kept asking himself.
"You took away his dream," Naruto said while his silvery tears continued to drip, but as he continued to speak, his voice had become more guttural and beast like, "So now, I'LL DESTROY YOU!"
Haku felt his eyes widen in fear as he saw the blond raise his head to reveal the shattered pieces of his irises now falling out of his eyes, glinting like shattered ice under the sun, to reveal the spinning crimson of the infamous Sharingan, with two tomoe in the left eye and a single one in the right. His pupils though, curiously, remained with the same reflective look.
But none of this caught his attention as crimson chakra began to spin in a torrent, cutting into the ground, gouging the concrete around him. It spiraled high into the air and split the mist that was surrounding them, creating a whirlwind. The masked boy felt his eyes widen in fear as a fox's head materialized in the crimson chakra above him, causing panic and fear to spread in his body like wildfire in the brush.
This wasn't human chakra. It could only belong to that of a monster.
Kakashi felt his eyes widen as he felt a wave of demonic chakra run through the area. It was that chakra, the energy that belonged to the nightmare of a demon that had plagued Konoha and killed his sensei twelve years ago.
'How? Did the seal break?' Kakashi panicked, but after calming down for a couple seconds, he extended his senses. 'No. Naruto still has his soul intact, but either way, I need to end this quickly before anything happens.'
Quickly, he pulled out a scroll and threw it into the air while at the same time spreading blood on his thumb from the gouge across his chest. The scroll finally followed the rules of gravity and fell down, prompting him to catch it. As quickly as his shinobi skills could allow him, he unrolled the scroll while wiping the blood he had gotten on his thumb across the length of it.
"Zabuza, I understand it's not your style, but right now I'm pressed for time. How about a one-shot move?" he announced to the mist.
"Alright Copy-Cat, show me what you got!" Kakashi smirked as he heard the Demon of the Hidden Mist accept his challenge.
He quickly rolled up his scroll and, while holding onto it, flashed through a set of hand seals and pressed his hand against the ground.
"Earth Release: Earth Tracking Fang Technique!"
Sakura backed away slowly as she felt the chakra in the air suddenly become heavy, as if someone had thrown a blue whale on her back. Her breath caught in her throat as it continued to wash over, making her knees cave in from under her. Tears began to flow down her face as a sense of hopelessness and despair started to creep into her very being, every dark emotion that existed was starting to infest and slowly corrupt her mind. The only way to react to these new feelings was to weep in sorrow.
What was out there that could bring out all of what she was feeling?
Tazuna wasn't fairing well either. He wasn't even a shinobi, but he sure as hell could feel what was in the air, even if he didn't know what it was. The only way he could describe it was the want and need to fall to his knees and beg for mercy, despite the fact that no one was there to hear his pleas for forgiveness.
With their silent fears beginning to take over them, they watched the mist, waiting to discover what it was that could bring them to their knees.
Naruto now turned his full attention to the mirror that Haku was in, revealing the crimson pinwheel of the Sharingan spinning wildly around the intact mirrors that were Naruto's pupils. All of the senbon imbedded in him began to fall to the ground as his wounds began to heal right before the masked boy's eyes.
The blood red chakra receded back into the blond, but the whirlwind remained as his features began to change. His hair became messier while his canines extended to become fangs; his nails grew into fatal-looking claws and his unusual birthmarks became more defined. With the Sharingan spinning in his eyes, he now looked like a demon in the flesh.
'He's attacking!' Haku screamed in his head, feeling every ounce of the killing intent concentrate on him.
Naruto rose up on his legs and began charging at speeds Haku was sure he'd be hard pressed to match. He quickly jumped out of the mirror as it was smashed into hundreds of pieces, but Naruto's newfound Limit tracked his every movement. Haku gasped as a bone-crushing grip snatched his ankle and smashed him into the ground, cracking the concrete he had been thrown into. But the blond wasn't done yet as he continued to hold onto him and then toss him to the left, thankfully straight into an ice mirror.
Naruto charged again, but stopped as all of the surrounding manifestations of ice gave a blinding flash. Using the momentary distraction, Haku leapt from his mirror and made a beeline for the closest one for a counter attack. As the light died down, the crimson-eyed boy's Sharingan tracked senbon coming at him from all directions. Without warning, Naruto let loose an unearthly roar, sending a concussive wave that blew all of the needles away and cracked the mirrors.
The faux hunter-nin watched as Naruto's irises shattered again as he looked at each mirror for him, gradually removing the pinwheel of the Sharingan. Haku's eyes widened at the bizarre event.
What was this? Naruto used the Sharingan, only for it to be replaced by those shattered, mirror-like irises once more. What was this Bloodline Limit? Haku never saw anything like it before in his life.
As Haku studied this new Limit, Naruto identified him and rushed at his occupied mirror. Just as the mirror shattered, Haku scrambled out of it and quickly got to the highest one. As Naruto looked up, the masked boy shot out of the mirror faster than could be tracked, but his target had jumped out of way, spiraling in mid air and skidding to a stop at the other end of the dome.
Haku was about to make a break for the nearest mirror, at least until the blonde raised his head revealing the shattered pieces of his irises falling away again. This time, though, they were revealed to be the exact same stormy-colored eyes Haku had. Interestingly, the mirrors of his pupils remained intact, even after the change.
Haku's eyes widened in shock as ice began to manifest on the boy's fingers, creating talons of ice. Haku turned the other direction and scrambled to the nearest mirror and quickly leapt into it, but his safety was broken as Naruto leapt after him with a roar, joining him inside the mirror.
Haku ducked under the strike within the mirror and quickly slid under the enraged boy's follow-up attack, exiting the mirror. Naruto was quick to follow, striking the ground where the Hyouton user quickly hopped from.
His ultimate attack and defense now useless, Haku could only ask himself what the hell was going on and how the blond was using ice manipulation.
Before Haku could make it to another mirror, Naruto leapt at him and caught his wrist. With a twist, Naruto shattered bones and let loose a torrent of crimson chakra that burned Haku's skin. The demonic blond pulled back his arm slowly, clenching his hand into a fist with the ice nails biting into his skin and charged it with enough blood-red chakra to make it glow. Haku's eyes widened as the punch came at him at what seemed like an eternity, but it felt like getting hit like a sledgehammer as he went flying backwards through one of his diamond-hard mirrors, shattering it like it was porcelain. The Hyouton user skidded backwards several feet, finally coming to a stop a distance away from his former dome of mirrors.
The boy's mask slowly crumbled as he demurely rose. Looking towards his adversary, he watched as his mirrors crumbled as the demonic boy eyed him with something akin to murder with his stormy-colored eyes, his body shadowed from the light behind him.
I guess… this is how I die, I'm sorry Zabuza. I'm just a broken tool now. Haku thought in misery.
He watched as Naruto dug his bloodied ice claws into the ground and began to charge at him, gouging the ground as he dragged his weapons behind him. Haku closed his eyes, awaiting death as the last piece of his mask fell away.
Sakura looked up as she felt the wave of the demonic chakra ebb away, the feeling of pressure and the dark feelings going away with it. She slowly stood and looked around.
Tazuna was looking around the place with bewilderment, his confusion stemming from never sensing chakra before.
Never before had Sakura felt anything like that. It was foul and carried with it a sense of malice beyond human comprehension. That could have not belonged to anything human.
With these thoughts in mind, she gripped the kunai that she was holding even tighter, feigning anticipation as she waited for whatever the beast was to appear out of the mist.
When the pain never came, Haku slowly opened his eyes to see Naruto's ice claws shatter and fall to the ground, leaving his hand a foot away from his forehead. Looking towards the blond's face, his messy hair covered his eyes, but the silvery tears once again rolled down his face.
"Well, are you going to kill me?" Haku's answer was a left uppercut that sent him to the ground. It didn't hurt like that sledgehammer hit that he had taken early, but it was enough to knock a couple teeth loose.
He stayed on the ground for a couple seconds before he softly spoke: "You're going against everything that you were taught as a shinobi."
"I don't care!" spat the blond.
Haku slowly stood back up, spitting the blood that pooled in his mouth. His eyes caught Naruto's and he could see the irises once more take their shattered, mirror-like appearance. It was to Haku's utter astonishment that the shards of mirror making up Naruto's irises fell once more, this time revealing the crystal-blue he was associated with. The pupils, though, still remained the glossy mirrors.
"You… You have a Bloodline Limit… like me," Haku muttered as he stood to his full height.
Naruto shook his head, throwing the silvery tears everywhere. "No, I don't."
"But you do. You used my Hyouton and the Uchiha's Sharingan," countered Haku.
"How is that possible?" asked the bewildered blonde.
Haku's face fell into a sad look. "I don't know either, but I do know were both alike. Every time I'm around you I can feel your loneliness."
Naruto took a step back as Haku pinned his deepest pain. Then again, he shouldn't be surprised –Haku empathized with him more than anyone he met so far.
The blond's face twisted into anger. "How could you serve that scum, Zabuza?"
With a sigh, Haku told his life story, how his father feared him and his mother and tried to murder him, only to die by his own hands. Then he went on to explain how he wandered the land as nothing but a common orphan until Zabuza found him and trained him. Naruto stood silent as he digested everything, pondering how they could be so alike.
"Maybe we could have been friends under different circumstances," the blond finally said.
Haku gave a soft, kind smile. "Maybe we could have been. Before I ask of a favor from you… Your eyes… what is that Doujutsu you used?"
Naruto looked at him with shock. "I don't… I don't know. How could I have one?"
"Look at your tears," ordered Haku, still donning his soft smile.
The blond obliged and wiped a tear away from his cheek. Looking at it, he saw what looked like liquid silver. Curious, he ran the tear against his fingers. The liquid felt cold, but yet it was smooth and pleasant to the touch.
He looked up from his hands to see Haku wearing a sad smile.
For not the first time in his life, he couldn't help but ponder who his parents were if he had a Limit. Naruto recalled the boy's words of how he used the Hyouton and the Sharingan.
"Your eyes, they're very beautiful." Naruto was abruptly taken from his thoughts as Haku complimented him.
"Thanks, I guess…" said Naruto slowly.
"Now about that favor… when all of this is done, I have a scroll with all the techniques I invented at our hideout. It's about a mile outside of town," the boy explained.
"What's this favor?" Naruto asked with caution –ninja didn't just hand over scrolls with valuable techniques without a really good reason.
Haku's sad smile was the only warning Naruto had. "I want you to kill me."
The blond blanched and quickly retaliated: "NO WAY! I WON'T DO IT!"
"Please," Haku pleaded, almost begging. "I have no reason to live. I am but a broken tool, and Zabuza doesn't have need for a something that is of no use to him."
"There… There has to be another way," Naruto futilely suggested, hoping he could change the boy's mind.
Haku wouldn't take no for answer. "I wish there was another way. I'm sorry that you have to stain your hands with my blood."
Naruto once again found himself letting his silvery tears fall as he pulled a kunai out of his pouch and gripped it. He closed his eyes as he charged for the smiling boy, but instead of piercing flesh as he had been asked to do, he opened his eyes to see that Haku had stopped him with one of his senbon while performing a single half seal.
"Forgive me, but my master has one last use for me. Keep those beautiful eyes of yours safe," with that, he delved into his ice mirror and disappeared, only to be seen again when he had died.
After all was said and done, Zabuza ended up killing Gato using a kunai he was holding in his mouth, his arms useless thanks to wounds from Kakashi. In the end, Zabuza's life was forfeit to Death when the mercenaries struck back. The small army of men had then turned their attention onto them, but the villagers had arrived in the nick of time.
As the villagers rejoiced, Naruto went to the back of the crowd. Amidst the cheering and the laughter, he stared into a puddle of water, looking into his eyes. His irises were still the crystal-blue he was so used to, but his pupils were still the same mirrors as they had been during his fight with Haku. Adding chakra to his eyes, his irises shattered and became broken mirrors.
It was funny to see your own reflection in your eyes.
When he stopped putting chakra into his eyes, the shards of mirror that made up his irises would fall away and he would once again find himself staring at his blue eyes.
Thankfully, Sakura and Sasuke had not walked over to him; as a matter of fact, they hadn't seen his eyes yet. Kakashi once again suffered from chakra exhaustion and was attempting to relax by means of reading his infamous little orange book.
He looked up to the sky as he decided what he was going to do. As soon as he was done relaxing, he was going to go and try to find Haku and Zabuza's hideout and get the scroll. It was masked boy's last wish that he get it.
Naruto tore his gaze from the sky and stared at his reflection in the puddle of water, once more staring at his silvery pupils.
"Miragan," he muttered to himself. "The Mirror Eye. Haku, I promise I'll protect these eyes."
With that promise, the ninja world would never be same.
With that, Naruto put on his foxy smile and walked into the celebrations, but making sure to keep his eyes as narrow as possible so nobody could see his pupils.
Kill Joy no Jutsu (A.K.A. Author's Note): Welcome everybody to my newest story. Yes, this is another 'Naruto can copy Bloodline Limits' fic, but before you all shake your heads, please note that I'm not like other authors who have tried this concept and failed to deliver because of various issues. I will not make Naruto god-like, I hate it when authors do that and this limit will have major weaknesses that will be explored later on in the fic.
Pairings for this story (and I cannot stress this enough) are unconfirmed. I want you all to enjoy a story with character development, not watch tonsil hockey like it's ESPN. Relationships with Naruto will develop, I can promise you this, but they will be slow and won't be confirmed. Now, there are a couple of relationships I will put in here for your enjoyment, but don't expect any twelve-year-olds to begin having make-out sessions.
For all of you who are new to my stories, I have been called the 'God of Action Scenes' by a couple people. I'm not one to brag, as a matter of fact I hate bragging, but I can say that this battle in this chapter was actually one of my shortest. If you want an idea of just what is my standard for a fight, I suggest you give my other Naruto fic a good looking at.
Now that we're past the pleasantries, I'll be posting any original jutsu, Limits, etc. down here for you guys to read up on and get more in depth information about whatever it is I'm trying to explain.
Now, please remain seated throughout the entire performance.
