One in a Million: Chapter 9

Webkinz and Phone Calls

"Joe?" Kevin asked. Joe stopped momentarily and shot a glare at Kevin then continued beating up the pillow.

"You need to stop being so... I don't know... emotionally corrupt?"

"Shut up Kevin. I don't have problems. You're the one with problems!"

"Joe, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem!"

"I have no problems! I'm perfect!" Joe shouted then started dancing with the pillow.

Kevin finally realized that Joe was still on major medication painkiller. That didn’t excuse him from what he did, but…

"I'll talk to you later." Kevin left.

Kevin had enough of his brothers. His parents had gone to dinner like 3 hour ago. He sent Frankie to sleep. He had been playing with webkins for 4 hours straight. Kevin had to drag him away from the computer. Kevin yawned, and then decided to take a shower.

When he got out, he put his pajamas and robe on and headed to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. Then he walked outside to get the mail, since he had forgotten that morning. He grabbed the 4 inch thick stack of mail. It was mostly fan mail, but as he thumbed through it he saw an invitation.

Just when he was about to read it, he looked up and saw Kim. He then dropped all the mail. Kim came running over to help him pick up the letters. “Hey, do you remember me?” Kim said, looking up while grabbing letters,” I’m Kim, the Kenny’s cousin.”

“How could I forget,” Kevin said looking up smiling.

“You got an invitation!” Kim said pointing out the invitation.

“Yah, but I don’t know if we can go,” Kevin said looking down thinking about Nick and Joe’s fight.

“Dang it, it will be no fun with you… guys there, it would mean a lot to me if you could come,” Kim said looking very disappointed.

“Well, I’ll see what I can do, I am the oldest I do have some authority,” Kevin said smiling.

“You’re the oldest? Me too!” Kim said excitedly, then her tone changed, as if she was lonely. “Well, I don’t have any brothers or sisters…”

“That’s too bad, well having 3 brothers isn’t all it’s cracked up to be,” Kevin replied. There was a silence that lasted a couple of minutes. “So how’s your ankle?” He said as he started to stand up.

“Oh it’s fine, so this is where you live?” Kim said shyly as she, too, stood up.

“Yah, this is it,” Kevin said looking back at the house.

“She really did mean next door didn’t she?” Kim mumbled to herself.

“Kim, come on, I need your help!” Destiny whined.

“I have to go, but I’m staying with Destiny and Maddie for a couple weeks. So, I’ll see you around right?” Kim said glancing behind at Destiny, then back at Kevin.

“Yah,” Kevin said walking backwards. Kevin was almost to the door when he heard Kim.

“Oh and Kevin, I love the robe!” She said winking Kevin couldn't help but blush. Then as Kim turned to walk home, Kevin saw a big bruise on her arm. Kevin thought, then shrugged. It was her business. Then Kevin went inside.

-DESTINY’S END-

"So, all the invites are out, I assume, since Kevin got one,” Kim said as she walked in to the Kenny’s kitchen.

"Yep," replied Destiny. She was mixing cookie batter. She handed a bowl of finished cookie batter for Kim to put on cookie sheets.

"They're for the Halloween party tomorrow" She explained. Kim started spreading the batter out in shapes of pumpkins.

"Kevin said they might not be able to go." Kim informed Destiny.

"Really? I wonder why. He said he was able to go yesterday. He even said he had plans cleared out just to make sure he wouldn't miss it. The Jonas Brothers have to be there, it's the MAJOR Halloween pool party. Most of the 12th grade is going to be there!" Destiny couldn’t figure out why they couldn't come. Well, the main reason she wanted them to go wasn't because they were EXTREMELY popular, but actually because she liked Joe. But ever since he ran away, then came back, something changed. She couldn't figure out what. They just didn't have the same sparks. And, as a matter of fact, she hadn't talked to him in forever. Destiny was planning to catch up at the party. "You know what Kim? I'm going to call them to double check. I know it's late, but I really thought they were coming."

"Sure. I'll keep mixing." Kim took over the cookie batter and Destiny grabbed the home phone and dialed the Jonas' number.

-ON THE JONAS' END OF THE PHONE LINE-

Kevin sat on the couch, exhausted. He had locked both Nick and Joe in their rooms. Usually, when the brothers fought, they would lock them in the same room until they got along. Sadly, this wasn't the case. Kevin had a feeling if they were in the same room, he would regret it. All of the sudden, the phone rang.

"Hello?" He answered.

"Hey Kevin" said Destiny on the other end of the phone.

"So, what’s up?" he asked.

"I heard that you ran into Kim while you were getting the mail. I was wondering why you told her that you couldn't go to the party."

"Oh... About that..." Kevin started, but just then, he heard a thump upstairs.

Kevin ran upstairs and into Nick's room. Nick wasn't there, of course. But the window was flapping open. Kevin ran to the window and looked out, but all he saw was Nick running across the street behind the Kenny's house.

Kevin pounded his fist on the table. "Ow!" he yelled. Then he heard yet another thump, this time coming from Joe’s room.

Kevin ran into the room. That window was wide open, too. Kevin ran to it and looked out to see Joe running behind the Kenny's house, too. Suddenly, Kevin heard more pounding. "What could it be?" Kevin thought, "There’s no one else to run away..." Then Kevin remembered. He ran to the bathroom. Maddie had been pounding on the door! He fumbled with the door, and then he finally remembered that he locked it. He ran and got the keys and then went back and unlocked it. Maddie burst out and, with the leftover strength from trying to push on the door, tripped and fell on the ground.

"Maddie! Are you okay??" Kevin asked, worried.

“What was that all about?” She asked, annoyed.

-DESTINY’S END-

The phone rang for a couple times, and then Kevin picked up.

"Hello?" He asked on the other end.

"Hey Kevin," Destiny replied.

She wondered where Maddie was. “She must still be at the Jonas' house,” Destiny thought.

"So what’s up?" asked Kevin.

"I heard you ran into Kim while you were getting the mail. I was wondering why you told her that you couldn't go to the party."

"Oh... About that..." Kevin was cut off. Destiny heard a thump on the other line. Then she heard frantic running up the stairs and more thumping.

Destiny waited for 5-10 minutes for Kevin to come back, but he didn’t. Destiny just groaned. “Oh well,” she thought, and hung up the phone.

…LATER…

Destiny went up to Maddie's room to get her iPod, which Maddie had 'borrowed' (and never given back). Then, she heard a voice coming from the window. It was Joe! He yelled up to her, "I know it's been weird in the past, but now I have to tell you, I love you." Then he started singing When You Look Me in the Eyes.

Destiny sighed. How did Joe know that was her favorite song?

Then Nick ran over and yelled, "Don't listen to him! It was supposed to be us together! I love you! Please, tell me you love me!"

Destiny stopped daydreaming when she heard that. Maddie would be so mad! Destiny always thought that Maddie and Nick secretly liked each other…

Then Joe interrupted, "No! Maddie, please, I BEG OF YOU!! I never want to be without you. I just can't stand it. Please, accept me!”

Destiny gasped.

She didn't know what to do. All she knew was that her heart was broken. She loved Joe, and yes they got in a big fight but she didn't want to lose him forever. But now he was in love with Maddie, but so was Nick. She had lost the only man in her life.

She didn't say anything, she just ran downstairs. She didn’t mean to, but she broke out in tears. "Destiny what’s wrong?" Kim came in and said, hugging her. Destiny told Kim about what had just happened

Kim went upstairs to go tell Nick and Joe that Maddie wasn't here and that they had seen Destiny not Maddie. She went to the window. "Um, sorry guys, but you saw Destiny, not Maddie, Maddie’s not here right now,” Kim said as polite as possible.

"Who are you?" Nick asked.

"DESTINY??" Joe yelled. He obviously didn’t know who he was talking to…

“Yeah, uh, Joe…you sorta kinda…crushed her heart..." Kim tried to break it to him easily. Joe sighed. He had a lot of explaining to do.

Then Kim’s face turned. Joe and Nick just looked confused. Then Kevin came out of the blue and threw them both into the pool.

"You guys never do that again! You could’ve hurt yourself jumping out the window," Kevin said angrily. Kim ran outside as fast as possible. Joe and Nick were just getting out of the pool by the time that Kim got to them.

"Wow, are you guys ok?" Kim said, slightly worried.

"Oh... Kim!" Kevin noticed Kim and started turning bright red. "You guys, head on home, NOW!" Kevin said to Nick and Joe, still looking at Kim, and then looking at them when he said ‘now’. Joe and Nick began to walk home, arguing the whole way.

"Um-" Kim said when she was cut off by Kevin.

"Sorry you had to see that, but I’ve had to deal with a lot tonight." Kevin said looking down.

"No its fine, I understand," Kim said.

"Kim, I’m sorry but I couldn’t help but see that you have a bruise on your arm, how did you get it?" Kevin asked.

"Oh, it’s... it’s nothing," Kim frowned as she remembered something.

"Well, I want you to know that you can tell me anything." Kevin said.

"KEVIN, STOP FLIRTING!" Frankie yelled from out his window next door. "Come on, I need you to help me tuck in my webkins!"

After blushing, Kevin turned and yelled, “One second Frankie.”

"Well, I’d better go, I’ll see you tomorrow," Kim said walking back inside.

"Yah, tomorrow," Kevin said nodding and smiling. He stumbled home, it was time for bed.
