Disclaimer: I don’t own Hey Arnold! Or the characters seen or mentioned in the show.
“Watch where you’re walking, bucko!” Was the rude remark given to a short 6th grader as he crossed her path. His eyes went wide as he realized who was speaking to him.
“P-Pataki,” he stuttered.
Helga glared, “Well if you’ve heard of me, why are you still standing in my way?”
It worked. The kid scampered off hastily, two notebooks slipping from his grasp on the way. Helga smirked evilly. The bell hadn’t even rung yet, and she still was able to terrify someone. Not to mention, someone she’d never met before who knew her name.
This is gonna be a great year, she thought as she continued to her locker. Or . . . it would be if I could finally let Arnold know how I really feel for him, the dense Football Head. She quickly glanced around, making sure no one in the hallways could hear her thoughts before she continued. The dense Football Head whom I longed to see all summer, whose image I cherished in my heart. I have to tell him I love him this year, I absolutely must!
She reached her destination and quickly turned the lock to the combination of 04-01-20. Quickly, she removed her jacket and hung it in the locker. Helga’s looks had changed since her years at P.S. 118. Her figure had begun developing a year ago, and although she wasn’t done yet, she was better looking than before. She had disposed of her pink dress in favor of a pink v-neck, and black jeans. Besides the change of her outfit, and her natural maturing, nothing else was different. Her hair remained in pig tails and her bow stayed in place as a continuous reminder of Arnold’s first words to her.
Helga adjusted her bag so it rested more comfortably on her shoulder. She shut the door of her locker and proceeded to make her way to Phoebe’s. As she rounded the corner, she was met head on with another force. She fell to the ground while her notebooks made their way out of her bag.
“What the. . .” she mumbled as she began to sit up. She looked to see what had happened, and her heart immediately began to leap. “I should’ve known! Only you, Arnoldo, walk around the school bumping into everything you can!”
Arnold groaned as he too sat up. His green eyes seemed a bit dazed for a few seconds as he tried to regain the use of his brain. Finally he was able to manage a reply. “Well Helga, you bump into me too. So why am I always blamed?”
Helga pretended to think about it. “Why you, Football Head? Why you? Crimney, you don’t look where you’re going and nearly give me a concussion , and you don’t think you deserve the blame?”
“Whatever you say Helga,” Arnold sighed as he stood up and offered her a hand. She gave his hand a look, as if it were a trap, but accepted it anyways and pulled herself up.
Arnold had grown a little since 4th grade. He was still shorter than Helga, but not by much. His hair was just as golden as it was back then, and his eyes just as green. He still wore his blue cap, and the same clothes that made it look like he was wearing a skirt. He really hadn’t changed much, and Helga was quite alright with that. She watched as he picked up both his books and hers, and took them from him almost politely as he handed them over.
“I’m sorry for running into you Helga. Are you alright?” Helga almost melted at the concern in his voice. Crimney, I have it bad!
“Um, yeah. But I uh . . . gotta go see Phoebe so I guess I’ll um . . . see you later.” Helga mentally slapped herself for the weak response. “But next time, watch where you walk, got it Football Head?”
Arnold rolled his eyes, “Yeah Helga, I understand. I’ll see you later.” He walked off, and Helga, of course, felt bad. She kept walking, wondering why she had to be so rough with him. If I’m going to tell him about my undying love this year, I have to be nicer!
When Helga saw Phoebe by her locker, she wasn’t at all surprised to see Gerald there too. She wasn’t sure how many times over the last two years she had told Phoebe that the boy was crazy for her, but Phoebe still wouldn’t believe it. The girl had it fixed in her mind that he could never see her in any way other than a friend.
Helga gave the two about ten seconds more before walking up and interrupting whatever conversation they were having. “Hey Phoebs,” she said as she approached the two.
Phoebe looked up at her best friend and smiled. “Good morning Helga,” she said, chipper as can be. “If you could please wait a moment, Gerald was informing me of something, and I’m sure he’d like to continue.”
Gerald smiled at the remark, “But yeah, li-”
“What’s he got to say that’s so important?” Helga rudely interrupted before Gerald could truly start.
Phoebe gave her a slight glare, “Well Helga, I’m not sure, but if you’d let him talk, I’m certain you’d find out.”
“It’s no problem Phoebe,” Gerald said. “I gotta go see Arnold anyway, so I’ll see ya later, alright?”
With a sigh, she said “Of course, Gerald.” Gerald shot one look at Helga, and quickly departed. As soon as Phoebe was sure he was out of earshot, she turned on Helga. “What, may I ask, was wrong with him speaking with me?”
“Crimney Phoebe. I was just asking a question!”
“Well then Helga, I must then ask you to avoid asking questions in that tone of voice when he’s around. It’s impolite!” Phoebe wasn’t completely like she’d been in earlier years. She had been quite unsure of what would have prompted the growth of a backbone, but there it was.
“Fine Phoebe. I won’t be rude to your man anymore when he’s around.” Helga rolled her eyes, irritable with the fact that she was giving in. She liked the fact that Phoebe had guts now, but hated it when those guts inspired anger toward her.
The two began walking down the hallway, mostly in silence. Neither of them quite happy with the outcome of the small episode, but neither of them completely mad about it either. The silence continued until they were outside their homeroom when Helga finally asked, “Phoebe, what was he saying to you?”
A small blush formed on her face when she realized what the question was implying. “Well, he certainly didn’t mention any of your delusional ravings about him liking me.” She paused for a second, with a look on her face that suggested she was wishing he had. “I’m not exactly sure what he was saying. He told me he had some information, but he was going on about how he found out. Then you appeared.” Her tone didn’t sound too resentful, much to Helga’s delight.
“Oh.” Was all she really had to say. She tried turning the doorknob to the room, but it was locked. “Well I guess the teacher isn’t here yet.”
“Well it’s approximately five minutes until class begins Helga. I’m sure they’re just enjoying their last bit of summer.”
“Yeah, yeah. But man, I wanna sit down!” And with that, Helga threw her stuff on the ground and plopped down. She looked up at her best friend and patted the floor next to her.
“Helga!” she exclaimed. “Do you know how many germs there are on that floor?”
“So?” she shrugged. “I’m not dead yet, am I? Come on, sit with me!” Helga tried the puppy dog look, and Phoebe couldn’t help but laugh at it.
“Oh Helga, that look is ever so adorable,” a voice said. It was a dreaded voice, a voice Helga hadn’t heard in a while and didn’t want to hear.
“Hi Lila,” Helga sighed, immediately looking her more carefree attitude.
“Hello Helga. And it’s ever so nice to see you again Phoebe.” Lila flashed a dazzling smile at them both, a trick she’d no doubt learned from her best friend Rhonda.
Phoebe returned the smile. “It’s lovely to see you again too.”
“Thank you! But Helga, I must ask you an oh so important question.” She looked around, as if to make sure no one but the two girls in front of her could hear. “Is it true?” she finally whispered.
Helga raised one side of her unibrow in question. “Is what true?”
Lila laughed. “Oh Helga, your parents must have told you when they found out!”
She felt a sinking feeling in her gut, but maintained her strength to ask, “Told me what?”
More laughter. “Why, Helga, I thought you would know! Why, Olga sent me an ever so wonderful e-mail informing me she’s coming home next week!”
Blinking seemed to be the only reply Helga could give. She had heard the words come out of Lila’s mouth, but she wasn’t able to comprehend them. Lila, of course, didn’t take much notice. “Oh, it’s going to be ever so wonderful! The three of us will have oh so much fun, and we absolutely must hang out every day! It’s not often that my Big Sis comes home, and I don’t believe she’s ever come home for an entire year.” Glee was so clearly written on her face.
Phoebe looked at Helga, knowing that this news had just ruined her entire school year. Helga’s face was frozen in a shocked look, and she seemed to be barely breathing. Deciding that Helga was likely to blow at any moment, Phoebe took matters into her own hands. “Lila, I’m positive Helga is delighted at the news of Olga’s return, but for the moment she most likely only wants to share her moment of rejoice with me, so if you could please give us a little bit.”
Lila smiled sincerely at Phoebe. “Of course! It’s ever so rude of me to not allow Helga to celebrate with her best friend.” With a small wave, she ran off in the direction of the bus port, no doubt to wait for the last of her peers to arrive.
It was only when Lila was gone, that Helga began to act alive. Her breathing began to speed up, and her face went from pale to red as anger began to set in.
“Why? Why does she have to come NOW?” Her fists were balled tightly, readily prepared to punch anyone or anything.
“Helga, please calm down,” was all Phoebe could say.
Helga let out a maniacal laugh. “Calm down? Calm DOWN? Crimney Phoebe, I just got told by Miss Perfect that my perfect sister was coming to stay for an entire year! I had it in my mind that this year was going to be good and now, as always, Olga is coming to ruin it! How can I calm down?”
Phoebe frowned, upset because of her friend’s predicament. “I suppose you’re right Helga, but if you plan to act irrationally irritable, than please do so outside school,” she begged. “I don’t want to see you get suspended for unleashing your anger on someone who didn’t do anything wrong, especially on the first day.”
Helga shook her head. “No, see if I get suspended for beating anyone up, it’s because they deserve it. They all know never to cross my path, and if they do, it’s all their fault!”
“What about Arn- I mean, ice cream?” Phoebe asked, cleverly using her trump card. “Don’t you think ice cream might look down upon you if you got suspended?”
Phoebs does have a point, Helga thought. I have to be nicer. “Fine Phoebe,” she grumbled. “I’ll keep my anger in check for the most part.”
A smile spread across her face. “I’m glad, and I sincerely hope you mean it.”
Helga gave her a smile in reply, a small one, but a smile all the same. “I plan on trying,” she said, and not a second later the bell rang. Teachers began to reveal themselves, walking down the hallways and going to their classrooms, all of them holding coffee mugs. Their new homeroom teacher yawned as she reached the room, and unlocked the door. The new school year had officially begun.
Just to let you know, I am a BAD updater. But I sincerely hope to update at least once a month. Don’t hold me to that, because I’m bound to slip up especially with school finally getting into swing, but I’m going to try. I’ll be writing as much as I can every weekend so I can have it up ASAP!
Oh, and unfortunately, there WILL be OCs in this. I apologize now to all the people that don’t like them, (because I normally don’t either) and hope it won’t effect how you review . . . much.
Also, anyone know why I picked 04-01-20 for her combination? 04 is the month of April. 01 is the first day of the month. The 20 is just kind've random. I decided to put it as a little tribute to the April Fool's Day episode.
Thanks Tim and Joey for helping me with the editing! D
