Pristine Uniforms

Posted December Eighth, 2007

Set in red/blue/yellow, but some things are taken from the show.

“Joy, Joy! No, really. I really mean it this time.”

Jenny had told her that at least four times already, and she really didn’t see what the problem was. Like clockwork the officer would take another drink of alcohol, eat another bite of food, and then it would be “I really should go.” It wasn’t as if she was on duty the next day, neither of them were. Why couldn’t she just have a little fun on the one night that she had off?

“Jenny! Listen to me!” She urged, leaning close to make sure that the woman was paying attention and also to steady her slightly-wobbly self. “We dressed down, changed our hairstyles, and tried to look as normal as everyone else around here as possible. Just let yourself go, we’re here to have fun!” It wasn’t even that late. Joy wasn’t going to judge her based off of how much she drank, not when she was right here doing the same thing, so she really didn’t see what there was to worry about. Both of their living quarters were right here in the city - it would be easy enough to walk home, and it wasn’t cold outside, seeing as it was late Spring.

“Look. If you think that you’re going to get drunk enough so that you even forget where you live, you can just stay at my apartment for the night. It’s not a big deal.” All the polite and proper speech had gone with the first couple hours of this, moving from place to place and drinking. She hadn’t done this in a long while and it really was fun with the right company. “Just have fun tonight, as an adult. I’m sure you don’t get to do it often.”

The lady was nodding along with her now, and she felt satisfied. It was true that they were both young and did not get many holidays, so why not make the best of it? And even if this wasn’t “making the best of it” then they were certainly having a fun enough time as the night went along. It sure beat sitting at home and cleaning her kitchen, anyway.

With a smile to the shopkeeper and a wave goodbye, they walked the steps needed to reach the next one. “Do you want to go home?” Joy wondered out loud. If Jenny was really sincere about what she had said earlier, then now would be the time to leave. They would be able to make it to their respective homes before it got too dark to see without streetlights, and before they became so drunk that they could neither think nor walk straight. Hopefully it wouldn’t get to that point for what it would mean for her head the next day, but it could happen and that was what mattered most.

“I want to see your house, actually. I’ve never been there before.”

So they decided. Joy passed by the next place without a second glance and continued walking until they reached the main street of the city, to where she could find her way home. It had only been a year, probably less, since she had moved from Viridian so she didn’t know her way around as well as she should have. Her job took up most of her time and she hadn’t fully realized this fact until now. But it wasn’t as if she could complain, for she was doing what she liked.

They turned to the left and continued walking along the sidewalk, which was still wet from the water that had slightly flooded the street earlier by way of a pipe bursting after a particularly rowdy Pokémon fight. Just a few blocks down from here and she would be standing at her apartment complex. The key was in her skirt pocket and she had already gotten her mail for the day, so all she would have to do would be to walk up those daunting cement steps and unlock her door.

She swallowed nervously as the cool metal slid into its place in the lock. Was her apartment really as clean as she remembered it to be? There were no dirty panties lying on the carpet, no spills in the kitchen, no overflowing trash in the garbage can? Her place wasn’t normally like that of course, but on particularly busy months it had been known to get almost as bad. She turned the key and then the doorknob, tentatively taking a step inside before swinging the wood back and showing her companion. The place was every bit as clean as she had left it.

“Wow, nurse!” The woman said with a laugh. “It’s just as spotless as I imagined, coming from someone of your family.”

“My family has nothing to do with it.” She said, embarrassed at the praise. Just because your family was known for something it didn’t necessarily mean that you were the same way. She had assumed that Jenny would know that, because she was used to the same sort of thing. Even if a person looked the same and acted in the same professional manner when on the job, it didn’t mean that they were an exact replica of everyone else personality-wise. But now that she thought about it, that previous comment was probably a joke of some sort that she just wasn’t sober enough, or maybe drunk enough, to get. So she let it slide and gave a whirlwind tour of the place.

It really wasn’t much. A cramped bathroom, a cramped kitchenette, a roll-out futon for a bed. A dresser that just managed to fit the space, hold her clothes, and still have enough room for said futon on the floor space. Once she had saved up enough she might have the mind to buy a bigger place. But right now she was only one person, and she spent more time at her job that she did at home, and she did not need a lot of things in order to be happy. So she hadn’t really thought about something bigger until Jenny had come along. Because two people made the whole thing seem a lot smaller.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s not a problem, I didn’t expect more. This is about as big as my own apartment.” And then, because it just didn’t seem like enough, “I want to spend the night. If that is possible.”

“Yes, you can! Of course!” Then the nurse looked around a little helplessly at the lack of space around her. Would there be room for a second person on the floor? Did she even have that second futon still? It took a few minutes of rummaging around, but she managed to find it lodged in a cupboard she had forgotten she owned, securely wrapped in plastic to keep the dust and grime off. Apparently she had thought ahead when she had packed it because now all it needed was to be rolled out. Jenny made what could only be described as an excited whimpering noise, and helped her to take the protective covering off.

They slept with their beds pushed together because there really was no other way to fit both of them in the tiny room. It also made it easier to talk, and they could share blankets if they needed to. It was nice to have someone over when her apartment had lacked visitors for such a long time. Even then she hadn’t had that many friends, at least none that came to her apartment like this. But she had been living with a roommate at that time as well, so it was understandable to think that someone thought they would be an annoyance if they were to do something such as that. Or maybe they had thought that she hadn’t liked them enough to let them stay over for a night, but either way it had only happened once or twice in all her years of living there.

The lights had been turned off and her alarm clock had been set face down so that the light would not annoy them. It was dark outside, save the city lights, and if it weren’t for those then perhaps she would have been able to see the stars. Everything felt so amazingly peaceful that she was reminded why she liked it here. She was far away from the drama of her friends and family, and even if she did get restless she could always step outside and into a local café for a cup of tea. Joy fell asleep to the sound of Jenny’s quiet movements, her own musings, and to the warmth of the blanket around her.

---

When she woke up she realized that she must have snuggled against the other woman in her unconscious state. The two were pressed loosely together, but even so she was sure that there was a blush on her face as soon as she noticed what had happened. Looking at the window outside made her realize that it was still early in the morning and the sun had not risen yet, despite what her body might think. She was too afraid of moving and waking the police officer, so she fell back asleep with her arm still pinned under the calm lady’s waist and her neck tickled by warm breath.

Third chapter posted early by Galbinus' request! Yes, I really would appreciate ideas! I wasn't planning on this storyline to move very fast... Actually, I wasn't really planning on a storyline. JoyxJenny pairing, anyone? (Don't worry - this fic will never transcend into the M category. Unless a kink meme is formed. Also, I hope I spelt city names correctly.)
