Chapter 1: The Mess Begins

Four young women, all eighteen years of age, sat crowded on a lone booth at the Crown Arcade, their heads bent in sadness and disbelief. The arcade was dead silent, save for sounds coming from the back room. Sounds that resembled an argument. A heated one.

Upon closer inspection, one would find that the voices were familiar. They were that of their Prince and Princess.

“Serena, you are being completely unreasonable!”

“Well, when you're treated like a child for so long by the man you're in love with, it happens! Admit it, Darien, you have absolutely no respect for me.”

“You want to talk about unfair treatment? Ever since you became Eternal Sailor Moon you've done nothing but undermine my every effort to help you.”

A gasp came. “Darien, I can't believe you! You're always telling me to do better, train harder, be a better leader. But what you really meant was just enough to let you keep your job! I'm not a child, Darien. I can take care of myself.”

“Then stop acting like one!”

“As opposed to a bitter, self-righteous jerk! You haven't changed. You're still the mean spirited boy who used to tease me after school.”

“And you're still the immature child who annoys me endlessly.”

The back room door crashed as Darien, his face red from anger strode from the confines and out of the arcade. Serena followed slowly and went to the table, staring longingly at the door where Darien had left. As she sat down, she sighed. After a moment, she spoke, her eyes welling with tears.

“What happened to us?” She whispered forlornly.

The girls were silent, till Raye spoke. “Another fight?” She asked quietly, rubbing her friend's arm gently. Serena nodded. “It seems like all we do is fight nowadays.” Her head came to rest on her palms.

“I don't know what happened. We were getting along great, as always. Then he left for America, and Seiya came around, then Darien was dead...then he was back. Since then...we haven't been the same. It's like something died with him.” She paused as tears spilling down her cheeks. “Maybe we aren't meant to be after all.”

The table rattled as Mina rose abruptly. “That's not true! Don't talk like that, Serena. You and Darien are timeless. You're as old as the stars! You're going to get through these little tiffs and then you'll get married and have Rini and rule Crystal Tokyo forever together.” She sat back down and, at Serena's sadness added. “If you can't find happiness, Serena, what hope is there for us mere humans?” She teased.

“Thanks, guys.” A small smile cracked at the corner of her mouth. However, it didn't touch her deep blue eyes. She knew something was changing. Not just in their relationship, but in the world. Call it a sixth sense, but something wasn't right.

Two days and not a single phone call later, found Serena walking to her school, for once not late but early. It was a beautiful sunny Friday morning, but the princess felt anything but happy. She sighed heavily as she kicked a wayward pebble. Darien hadn't called, hadn't been at the arcade and when she'd stopped by his apartment, he wasn't there.

Was he avoiding her? A tremor of guilt laced through her. If only they could stop fighting. It was tearing her apart. They had never fought before.

Ever since Darien had been brought back after the Galaxia incident, he'd been acting strange. Her first instinct was the suspect a plot by the NegaVerse or something of that nature. Selene knew, those nega-dweebs had tried to take him away from her so many times to try and hurt her. She was loosing count.

A lone tear fell down her cheek.

Serena knew part of the problem was her. She'd refused to talk about what happened between her and Seiya with him, saying it was nothing. Maybe Darien didn't believe her? Afterall, he was human, past life notwithstanding. He was susceptible to jealously and anger. Didn't he trust her?

Serena shook her head to clear her thoughts. Of course Darien trusted her. They'd known each other forever. There was nothing they couldn't tell each other. That was the bond they shared.

The moon child stopped and gazed into the receding moon. Even in daylight it still lingered. At least for a while. She smiled up at it, feeling calmed as always.

Since the three Starlights had left for their home planet, it seemed that Serena had been acting strangely. Her mind seemed to be fogging over, fighting back distraction was getting harder and her moods had become unpredictable. Being honest with herself, she realized that many of their fights had, in fact, been her fault.

Her shoulders slumped heavily and another sigh escaped. “I'm so sorry, Darien. I don't know what's wrong with me lately. It's like I'm not even myself.”

But the moon didn't answer her. With another long and heavy sigh, Serena continued her long trek to school. Maybe things would improve as the day went.

As she approached the school, the bell rang for them to get to class. Serena glanced up at her school. It didn't seem real. She was a junior...about to turn seventeen. (Japanese high school is only three years.) Anyone would think she was normal. They obviously didn't know her.

Her life was anything but normal. She had problems that most people didn't experience till their thirties. And even more that most people would never dream of. The fate of the universe had been carelessly dropped into her lap countless times and yet she'd never complained about the continued responsibilities. She'd given that up a long time ago, realizing that it was pointless.

The scouts. Their faces flashed before her as she walked into class. She ignored the gasps of surprise and seated herself in the back, between Mina and Lita. She tried to smile, but failed miserably. Her guardians inquired about her health, but she just nodded.

The scouts had their own responsibilities. They had to protect her and had sworn an oath to do so. They each had to support her and her choices, but had any of them ever stared evil in the face and spat on it without blinking?

True, she'd been terrified and expressed it openly at first, but she'd changed. Not much fazed her now that she'd faced down the most powerful sailor scout in the universe and won. She'd been tested millions of times. She'd won everytime.

Nehelenia's face entered her mind. Rage accompanied it. These feelings were unavoidable for her. Many enemies had tried to hurt her and her friends, but few had ever conjured her hate. They were Beryl and Nehelenia. They alone had been able to make her hate. They had stolen the man she loved.

Galaxia had killed him, but Serena forgave her, seeing as she had been possessed by Chaos. It wasn't her fault.

Darien's handsome face came to mind. And so did the problems they faced. It was just too much.

A headache came unbidden to her skull and pounded fiercely. Darien was her rock, the one that she could turn to when things got unbearable. Part of her was screaming that he treated her like a queen and yet another yelled at her to expect more.

It told her that even though she was young, Darien should treat her as an equal, not a child.

'He sees you as a child! How can you take this? You're the princess! His princess! He does not hold us the way he once did. With passion and abandon. You are but a child to him!' The warring voice screeched.

No, he loves me. I'm just younger than I used to be on the Moon. Things aren't the same here as they were on the Moon.” Serena retorted in her mind.

'Why can't they be?' Was the simple reply.

Serena shook her head and tried to clear her thoughts. It didn't work. The voice came back, taunting her and telling her that he didn't want her as a woman.

After several moments, Serena screeched. “It's not true!”:The class around her stopped and stared at her. Mina and Lita jumped up with her and tried to steady her with gentle hands.

Serena broke away roughly. Her feet were uneasy as she ran out of the classroom. Her scouts tried to follow, but were soon left behind in the wake of her fast pace. Her feet and legs burned as she raced home to the empty house.

The door slammed behind her and she took the stairs three at a time. All the way, the voice continued. As she reached her room, she closed and locked it. She backed away, trying to find a way to rid herself of the voice. Her fingers shook as they grabbed her dresser and flipped it on its side. Her desk was next, then the contents of her closet.

It was as if Serena couldn't control herself anymore. And finally, when she calmed, she looked around at the disaster her usually clean room was. Her head hurt and her body ached, but the voice was gone. The sweet and hurt voice that sounded so like her own. Almost a morbid copy of her. It was gone.
