ELITE: 50 Years Later, Chapter 10: The Book Store
"Where is she, Ellis? She's really late!"
"Just calm down, Iz. She said she'd be here, she'll be here."
"Ellis's right, Isobel. Just be patient. The Fire Guardian is sceptical, to say the least. But she'll come, out of curiosity."
"Are you sure, Will?"
"Yes."
Ellis, Izzie, Will and Hay Lin were all standing at the park in the middle of Heatherfield, the day after they had told Ebony her destiny. It was twelve-twenty, and Ebony hadn't come. Izzie was the only one of them stood up, peering in all directions for their fellow Guardian. Ellis, Hay Lin and Will were all sitting down on a bench, waiting patiently for Ebony to arrive.
Izzie had dressed in a denim skirt, and a light blue hooded top with a band's logo on it: "Dream Sequence," in purple. She had the hood down and her hair loose, for once, so it cascaded down her back. Ellis was wearing a football T-Shirt, cords and sunglasses.
It was a beautiful day, and the blinding Sun beat down heat upon them; the reason for the Earth Guardian and the other two to sit down. Although Izzie resented Ebony greatly, for Ellis's obvious crush on her, she knew the team couldn't do anything without their Fire Guardian. Ellis rolled his eyes and attempted to change the subject.
"So, Dream Sequence, huh? I've never heard of them before, are they new?"
Izzie peered at him, as if she didn't know what he was saying, but she looked at her shirt.
"Oh! Um, yeah. It's my band."
"You're in a band?!"
"Yeah, the keyboardist's Mum made these shirts for us. I'm the lead singer."
"My husband used to be in a band," smiled Will. Izzie smiled at the Keeper. Will had asked for the Heart back when they met half an hour before, so she could give it to it's rightful Keeper. Izzie had given it back graciously, she didn't like it. When she had given it back, in a back alley so no-one could see, Izzie glowed with a blue light, signifying that her power of Water was finally with her.
Izzie was just about to get out her phone to call Ebony but before she could press a key, she heard a yell,
"Don't bother, i'm here!"
She spun around, to see Ebony walking up to them, slowly. Her hands in her pockets. Ebony wore a dark red vest-top and dark jeans. Looking stunning, again, even in simple clothes. Ellis again had the curl of a smile on his face when Ebony got to them. She returned it with a strange look and a raised eyebrow.
Izzie folded her arms as Will and Hay Lin approached her. Before they could say a word Ebony nodded,
"I know who you are."
Will and Hay Lin beamed at her, which didn't change Ebony's look of having a bad smell under her nose. They didn't seem to notice. Hay Lin ambled down the street, waving her arms for the others to follow.
"Come with me, little one's. Today we shall find the remaining of the group..."
Ellis, Izzie and Ebony raised their heads hopefully. 'Good,' Ebony was thinking, 'these two wholesome nutcrackers are making me want to cry with boredom. That guy's annoying too, stop looking at me!'
"...and Candracar will finally have their Guardians."
They walked the streets of Heatherfield, Hay Lin and Will knowing every turn, a twinkle in their eyes, if they were to go somewhere special. The new Guardians were expecting portals, magic and new worlds, but...
"A book store!" exclaimed Ebony, throwing up her arms at the ancient store. It was on the corner of a street, a hanging sign calling the store 'Ye Newe Bookshoppe'. The word 'Newe' looked freshly painted, but the other words looked just as old as the store exterior. Ebony looked furious. Izzie groaned exasperatedly and took Ebony's wrist, dragging her into the bookshop behind her, following the others.
The shop was small. A desk, and a lot of plastic chairs and tables dotting the place, people occupying them. At the back were several aisles of new books, old books, dusty tomes and sci-fi comics. Behind the desk was an Asian man, late teens with rectangular glasses and a checked shirt. Hay Lin approached him as Will left them to join a young teen reading a book at the far side of the room. At seeing Hay Lin, the man nodded his head and stepped aside, showing a door with two flights of stairs, one that lead up, and another that lead down. Hay Lin walked down the stairs that lead down wards, the Earth, Water and Fire Guardians following curiously.
The room opened up to a dingy basement, a grey room with wide walls with old yellowing film and band posters on the wall. Ebony lent against a wall, folding her arms. Hay Lin walked to the far wall, where there was an extremely faint and large outline of the Heart of Candracar. Izzie noticed this, and pointed at it.
"It's the Heart!"
"Yes, back when we were Guardians, this was our Headquarters. The Oracle created this portal so we could contact the Elders of Candracar if ever we so wished," Hay Lin ran her hand over the faded outline of the portal and then turned to them, smiling.
"Will's coming."
She was right. Within seconds Will had crashed into the room, beckoning in two girls who stood behind her, looking at each other confusedly.
The first one who came in was very petite, had shoulder-length amber coloured hair and big brown eyes. She had paper-white skin and a heart shaped face. At seeing her Izzie's eyes widened.
"Lilia?"
The girl looked at her, beamed and then rushed up to her.
"Izzie! Daddy called me down, and said you were here."
"Yeah, you told me that you live here."
"What is this?"
"Uh...oh...long story."
Lilia blinked curiously and turned at Ebony's exasperated gasp.
"Not Natalia the Nerd!"
She was referring to the other girl. She was tall, wore stylish rectangular glasses that covered her hazel eyes. She had short blond hair in a similar style to Wills. She was very thin and bony and had very light exotic olive coloured skin. She was blushing furiously at Ebony's comment. Will went up to Natalia and put her hand on her shoulder protectively.
" 'Natalia the Nerd' is going to be your new leader. I suggest you treat her with respect."
Ebony pouted angrily and folded her arms. Natalia blinked at Will and asked,
"Talia, please. Excuse me...um, leader of what, exactly?"
Will's eyes gleamed mysteriously and she joined Hay Lin at the wall.
"Sit down."
Three chairs materialised out of thin air, which were soon taken by Lilia, Talia and Ebony who snatched the last. Izzie, who knew what was about to be said, looked at Ellis and nodded to the stairs. Ellis followed as Hay Lin began with the explanation.
Upstairs, Izzie and Ellis had to cover their eyes with the sudden light. They sat down over by the window opposite each other.
"So," Ellis said, "what do you think?"
"I don't know. I know Lilia from school, she's in one of my classes. She's a great person but I don't know about a great Guardian."
"And the other one? Natalia? Ebony said she was a nerd."
"Well, she is. One of the smartest kids in the school but she doesn't really have any friends. Her friends are her books."
"Well, she's our new leader. She will hold the Heart of Candracar, and Lilia will be our Air Guardian."
"I know, I wonder how they're taking it."
They sat there for what was the good part of a few hours, chatting half-heartedly, picking up a few books that previous occupiers had left behind and flicking through them. When it had been two and a half hours after they had left the basement, they heard a call.
"Ellis! Izzie!"
It was Will. She waved from the entrance to the basement, looking tired. She put her hand on Izzie's shoulder as they approached.
"It's all done. They bought it, but it took a lot of persuading. Talia now has the Heart and Lilia now has the power of Air. I'm going to get drinks, we all need them."
Will winked as she disappeared into the adjacent kitchen. Izzie and Ellis entered the basement, where Hay Lin was sat, looking tired, Lilia was shocked, looking at her hands, which were glowing a faint silver colour. Ebony had taken her place at the wall, her arms folded again. Talia had the glowing Heart balanced on her hand, her gazing at it with awe, with a faint trace of joy in her hazel eyes. Izzie went straight to Lilia and gave her a hug.
"Are you OK?"
"I..I guess. I think i'm kinda shocked. So you're the Water Guardian, huh?"
"Yeah. And you, Air?"
"Uh huh. Wow, this is immense."
"Tell me about it. I'm glad you're the Air Guardian, I couldn't stand another one like Eb..."
"Shh!"
Izzie looked up and saw that Ebony had been listening to them from her spot on the wall. She looked hurt but not surprised, and she turned her head to look at Ellis who was shaking Talia's trembling non-Heart hand.
Suddenly they heard a grunting. They turned, to see Will walking slowly into the basement, not laden with drinks as she had said before. She was breathing heavily, but had a neutral expression on her face, and grinned at Talia as she closed her hand, obscuring the Heart as it went into her body.
"Well done, Guardiannnsssssss..." Will hissed, marching up to Hay Lin, who was peering at her quizzically.
"Uh, Will?"
"You have forrrmmedd..."
"Will?" asked Talia.
"...but you arrrrree no mooooore..."
"WILL!"
But before Hay Lin or the Guardians could move or do anything, Will struck out at Hay Lin, throwing her across the room with a power that could not be held by a sixty year old woman. Hay Lin slumped against the opposite wall, and crumpled to the floor, unconscious. Izzie and Lilia screamed, Ellis running up to Hay Lin and Talia and Ebony staring at each other in horror. White light began to spark around Will, until her red hair turned green, her old and frail body lengthening and transforming. Within moments the person was no longer Will Vandom, but was a horrific monster; tall, lean, a green mass of flesh and hair. Whatever it was wore nothing but a long black cloak, which obscured it's body and form, except for it's head. It was female, with long dark green hair, pristine features, and glowing red eyes. It's long hands reached out from the arms of the cloak, and a fork-tongue poking out from it's mouth. It reached the ceiling, and the cloak trailed across the floor.
The Guardians were terrified. They were helpless, shocked, desperately trying to wake Hay Lin, Ebony screaming at Talia to bring the Heart. But she was frozen in terror, staring at the monster with her large hazel eyes. Ellis and Izzie were trying to call up their powers without being in their Guardian form, Lilia was shaking Hay Lin, to no good use.
The monster advanced, letting out a deafening shriek as the Guardians lost all hope.
