Toph could recall, in almost painful detail, exactly how it had gone.

Three years previously

“So Toph, you understand, don’t you? I mean the stuff you were talking about in there… I didn’t mean to overhear or anything…”

“It’s ok Sokka-“

“All that stuff you were saying to Katara… Well I’m flattered you feel that way about me and all, but I’m with Suki.”

“Yeah, don’t worry Sokka, I was only joking. No harm done.”

“Ok, so… You’re sure you’re ok?”

“Yes of course I am Sokka.”

No. Of course I’m not bloody ok, Sokka. You just found out exactly how I feel about you and guess what? You definitely don’t feel the same way about me. Yeah, right now I just want to go and make myself a nice big earth hole and bury myself alive. No, I am not FUCKING OK!!!!!!!

“Good. Well I hope this doesn’t come between our friendship or anything...”

“No, don’t worry its fine.”

How could I ever possibly even think about talking to you in the same way again? Our friendship is over.

“Ok, so see you soon then Toph! I hope you can come visit me and Suki sometime soon.”

He moved in to hug her.

“Yeah, that would be nice.”

Oh no, don’t hug me… Just the feel of your arms makes me want to melt into them, and I can’t help but take a small sniff of the cologne you use. After all, I am NEVER going to see you again…

“Bye Toph!”

“Bye…”

So this is it. Well at least I’m not crying… Oh wait, Familiar heat building up behind eyes. Seems I am going to cry. I can’t let him see me like this. Ok Toph be strong…

She turned away from him and got busy folding some clothes next to her half-full suitcase. Sokka took the hint, and left.

As soon as he had left the room, Toph’s face screwed up and her eyes started leaking warm, wet tears down her cheeks and falling onto the stone floor. She felt each one touch the ground and each little drop they made seemed to finalize her fate.

She walked over to her desk and slumped forward in the chair, placing her head on top of a knitting pattern Katara had been showing her.

Her whole body shook with silent sobs as she let her pain and aguish out all over the green and black thread.

She felt Katara’s footsteps approaching the door but did not look up. Katara walked in and stopped to look at her.

She could feel Katara staring at her; she briefly wondered what a state she must look.

Katara made none of the annoying sympathetic cooing sounds she usually made when someone was upset. Instead she just walked towards her and gathered her up in a big hug.

For once Toph made no attempt to stem the waterfall of tears cascading over Katara’s dress. She let Katara hold her and was able to seek some, if only a small amount of comfort in her arms.

Back to the present

Now, three years later, sitting her small, but comfortable apartment in New Omashu, Toph contemplated the message Aang and Katara had sent her.

Dear Toph,

We know you haven’t ‘seen’ us in a while, but we feel this is an emergency and we want you here with us.

Especially Sokka. We know you probably don’t want to see him now, or ever, but He is in need of your friendship now, more than ever before. We are sure that you wouldn’t let us down.
