Kaoru’s POV:
I can’t believe Hikaru. How stupid can you be? I mean… We were just talking about it, and then… I rolled over. It had to be some time after midnight, and we still hadn’t seen each other. I tactfully avoided dinner so I wouldn’t have to face him. Truth is, it hurt too much. I really wondered in he actually wanted us to be separated. Hikaru? You awake?
Obviously. I thought you were ignoring me.
…No… What were you and mom fighting about?
It’s stupid, don’t worry about it. It’s all over now anyway.
I sighed, curling up in the sheets, Okay Hikaru…
Try to get some sleep. We’ve still got school tomorrow.
I’m better off not sleeping. I’ll just go insane with nightmares. You know that.
Just try. You’re older now. Maybe it’s different.
You’re still an insomniac. Practice what you preach. That shut him up, though I felt bad about it. I miss you, Hikaru. No answer. Yeah, he’s still mad. Fine, I’ll try to get some sleep, but you too, okay Hikaru? You listening?
…Yeah, okay. Night Kaoru.
I smiled, Night Hikaru. I love you.
Love you. I closed my eyes, trying to get some sleep. After what felt like hours, I finally gave in to the fatigue, though it didn’t last long.
My dream:
“Why do they always make us do fire drills in the middle of winter? I’m freezing!” A voice asked from beside me. I instantly recognized it as Arai-kun. Everyone had been ushered outside when the fire alarm suddenly went off. Somehow, the Host Club, (and Arai-kun,) had managed to meet up.
“I bet somebody just pulled the fire alarm.” I commented, bored with the whole situation.
“No, it’s not a drill, look!” Haruhi was pointing to the roof. It was about right above the third music room.
I froze, “Where’s Hikaru?”
Everyone looked around, calling his name. Haruhi turned to me, “He probably just got separated from us, I’m sure he’s fine-“
“HIKARU!” I ran toward the building, not stopping to think logically. I felt strong arms wrap around me, holding me in place. It was Mori. “HIKARU!” And just like that, with a gust of wind, the entire school caught fire. “Hikaru…” He let go of me, and I fell to my knees, and for a fraction of a second I thought I heard laughing from behind me, but just as I was about to turn around, the lights went on in my room, snapping me back to reality.
“Hikaru…” I whimpered as my mother approached the bed.
“Kaoru, sweetie, are you okay?” She asked softly, sitting at the foot of my bed.
“NO!” I snapped, wiping the tears from my eyes, “Hikaru…”
She sighed, “It was just a dream, Kaoru.”
“But-“
“I’m right here, Kaoru.” My head shot up. Hikaru stood in my doorway. I wanted to run to him, hug him, make sure I wasn’t still dreaming.
The tears flowed more vigorously as I realized I couldn’t do it. Hikaru, I’m scared!
“Hikaru? What are you doing up? Go back to bed.”
“I can’t sleep without Kaoru.” He stated softly.
Taking a deep breath, I whispered, “Told you so, Hikaru.”
“Yeah, I know.” His eyes flitted from me, to mom, then back, You’ll tell me later, right?
Yeah. Pulling the blankets up higher, I mumbled, “I’ll be okay now. Sorry I woke you up.”
“It’s alright Kaoru. Goodnight.” Mom said, shooing Hikaru out before her and closing the door.
A few minutes later, all of the lights were off, and everything was quiet again. Kaoru?
I know it was a dream, but I was so scared!
Shh, calm down. Tell me what happened. I proceeded to tell him my entire dream, unsure weather or not he was listening because I’d been talking for so long, until finally there was a knock on the door, and the noise broke my train of thought. Kaoru? What’s wrong?
“Kaoru-san, it’s time for school.” I winced, sitting up.
“Okay.” The maid left again, Time for school, Hikaru. No response. Something wrong?
I don’t have any clothes. The maids took away the uniform I wore yesterday to wash it.
Any reason you didn’t come grab them?
That’s what mom and I were fighting about.
I laughed, picturing it. You’re right, that is stupid!
Kaoru shut up and get dressed!
Okay daddy. I did as I was told, quickly dressing and going out into the hallway, where my brother was standing- still in his boxers –waiting for me, looking totally pissed.
Morning love.
“Get out of my way.” He snapped, brushing past me.
I grinned, leaning against the doorframe after he closed the door, “Aww, don’t be like that Hikaru” After a few moment of silence, I continued, “What’re you mad at me for?”
He finally stuck his head out of the door, then dragged me inside and closed it again. He then wrapped his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder, “This is hell.”
“I missed you too.” I said softly, holding him.
“It’s gonna drive us insane.”
“Yeah.” He leaned closer and kissed me tenderly, “We’re lucky mom and dad are still asleep.”
“Yeah.” He gave me another gentle kiss before saying, “We should go… Before they wake up.”
I nodded, releasing him, “Yeah…”
He smiled, “We’ll see each other at school, Kaoru.”
I froze, remembering my nightmare, “Promise you won’t leave me, Hikaru.”
His smile faded, “Kaoru, there won’t be a fire.”
“How do you know?”
He sighed, squeezing me tightly, “Kaoru, trust me. Chances are, there won’t be a fire today-“
“Promise you’ll stay with me, Hikaru!”
His smile returned, this time, with more passion, his lips met mine, “I promise.” With this, he let go of me, and together we left the room.
