Chapter One.

The Surprise.

The house was quite and dark. I couldn't even see my shadow on the wall—if i had one at all. My dad's snores were alarmingly loud and to my pleasure, consistent. I tip-toed down the stairs, slowly, holding onto the railing in case I tripped over something—which was bound to happen considering my lack of coordination. I counted the stairs going down, remembering that I counted seventeen before I went up to bed. I was on the sixth one when it creaked loudly. I sucked my breath in, holding it anxiously, listening intently for any sounds of movement in Charlie's room. I let it out in a relieved sigh when I continued to hear his thunderous snores. I reached my foot out and down slowly, making no haste—even if it meant I would see Edward faster. But Edward made me promise not to hurt myself while he was gone.

Edward left to go hunting. He told me to sneak out to his place once Charlie was asleep because he had a surprise for me. I was nervous. I didn't like surprises much, and I didn't like sneaking out and being disrespectful to Charlie. But I didn't care if Charlie would get mad at me. He already was mad at me for being engaged to Edward. He was furious that I was “Throwing my life away and being like him and Renee.” I told him that it wasn't like that, and that I really loved Edward—that we would be together forever. He just left. Edward told me that he was going to go fishing, so I waited up for him. He still wouldn't talk to me when he got home, so I decided that if he wasn't going to support me, that I had no reason to support him as my father.

I sighed when I reached the bottom of the stairs, my eyes semi-accustom to the dark. I could see the outline of the couch and kitchen door frame, but I couldn't see the detail on the couch or the wood paneling on the floor. I paused once more when I got to the door, listening harder to hear Charlie. His snoring remained constant, but aloof in the back room upstairs. I unlocked the bolt on the door and swung it open, closing it quietly behind me. I beamed as I ran over to my truck, an exhilarating rush taking over me. I was about to get in when I stopped, frozen in the act. I couldn't turn on my truck, because it was bound to wake Charlie, and he would be even madder at me, threatening all kinds of thing like “my roof my rules, or That boy isn't allowed here anymore!” than I would have to pull the “move-out” card, and even though I was mad at him, and wouldn't mind living with Edward and his family, I still couldn't leave Charlie—no, not now, not when I was so close to leaving him for good.

I jumped when I heard a noise in the woods not to far away from where I stood. I looked around nervously. Maybe it was Edward or Alice, or even Jacob—but Jacob was mad at me, so why would it be him? I heard it again and my heart rate went up. A dark figure appeared out of nowhere, and chuckled. I brought my hand up to my chest in relief.

“Jesus Emmett!” I scolded. “You scared the life out of me!” he scowled slightly at this but I ignored him. “What are you doing here?” I asked. He walked toward me, putting his broad grin back in place.

“I'm here to rescue you, of course!” he said, in what seemed a little too loud of a voice. I brought my finger up to my lips.

“Shhh! Charlie is sleeping! You don't want him to wake up and find me gone do you?” I asked. He grimaced.

“Sorry.” he whispered.

“That's okay.” I smiled, “You can't help it.” he grinned at me. “So, your rescuing me?” I asked, reminding him why he was here.

“Oh yea. Edward told me to make sure you got to the house okay, and since you can't start your car without waking the whole town, I thought I'd give you a lift.” he smirked at the joke he made about my car. I raised my eyebrow at him.

“Hey, show some respect. My car isn't that loud.” but the grin on his face showed otherwise. I rolled my eyes trying not to laugh. “So how are we getting to your house?” i asked already knowing the answer, seeing as he didn't bring a car himself. Emmett smiled mischievously and I knew what was going to happen before it did, but I had no time to stop him.

With lighting speed he reached out and threw me over his shoulder. I tried to to cry out to loud, but a small scream escaped my lips. Emmett immediately reached back and put his hand over my mouth—I could feel him shaking with laughter.

“mmhbadbamhmbasell!” I threatened, although it didn't come out clear enough. He took his hand away laughing hard, but keeping his voice quiet.

“What was that?” he asked, thoroughly enjoying this.

“I said you better watch yourself!” i clarified. This made him laugh harder, and my stomach started to ache with the uncomfortable movements of hard, cold, marble underneath me. “Please put me down!” I whined. “This is very painful!” I complained. He laughed some more, but placed me on the ground. I glared up at him, rubbing my stomach. “Next time don't do that!” I snapped. He rolled his eyes and pulled me onto his back, a much more comfortable position. I could feel his back muscles under me, and I felt uncomfortable once I involuntarily started thinking about what he looked like without a shirt on . I stopped immediately, and noticed we had started to run. I started to feel dizzy, but I couldn't move because I was to afraid to remove my eyes from the path. It was like if I wasn't looking, Emmett wasn't looking and he would crash. I started to feel nauseous, and could feel my palms clamming up.

I didn't realize Emmett had stopped moving. The trees were spinning around me, and the light from his house was blurred.

“Bella, are you okay?” he asked, a laugh hidden in his voice. I blinked hard, pushing down the nauseous feeling in my throat and nodded, but realized he couldn't see me.

“Y-yea—great, I'm fine.” i told him. I felt him pry my fingers loose, before placing me on the ground.

“Are you going to be sick?” he asked. Maybe. I shook my head. “Do you need help walking?” he asked, still hiding the laugh in the back of his voice. I shook my head again, but used his arm to pull myself up. I took a step towards the house, and everything shifted to the side. I caught myself before I fell.

“Okay then. I'm not going anywhere for the next few minutes.” I said plopping back onto the grass. I'd just have to sit for a moment, it would pass.

“Are you sure you don't want help?” Emmett asked, laughing openly this time. I glared up at him.

“Yes, I'm sure.” i said curtly. He shrugged and took a step back. Once I was sure I could walk, I got up and headed for the house. I made it without falling, although I almost tripped over my own feet going up the steps. Emmett's barking laugh broke out behind me, but I pretended I couldn't hear.

The door opened before I reached to knob, and Alice was bearing down upon me with hugs.

“You made it!” she squealed, “Although I knew you would anyway. But still, you made it!” she said with a tinkering laugh. I hugged her back.

“Thank-you Alice.” I said. “But can I please come in now? I would like to know what my surprise is.” she smiled and stepped aside letting me in.

“Edward isn't back yet. He and Jasper went to some place a little further away than Goat Rock's. They should be back in a few minutes though. I can see them getting ready to leave now.” she smiled. I nodded and went over to there couch. It was a beautiful white leather couch. I sat down as gracefully as I could. Alice sat next to me, smiling at me without speaking. It got uncomfortable after a while, so I said.

“Can I help you Alice?” her smile, if possible, widened even more.

“Well, I was wondering-” oh no, it was never good when Alice “Wondered”. “I was wondering when we should go get your dress.” I gaped at her.

“But Alice, we already got my dress.” I told her. Surely she didn't forget that. I know I couldn't. It was horrible. She was making me try on almost every dress they had in a size three. Some were red, some were blue, pink, purple, green, rainbow (which was quite hideous) and white. I wanted a white one, but she still insisted that I try on every color they had, and every different;y designed dress. I wanted to kill her by the time I was done.

“I know that. But what about the reception dress? Surely you don't want to party in your wedding dress? It would be very hard for you to dance in that.”

“Thank yo for believing in me.” i said, even though she was right. There was no way I was going to be able to wear that to the reception. I wasn't even sure if I would make it down the isle without tripping, especially in front of everyone, well, everyone being Edwards family and my three person family.

“You know that's true though. Plus, I was thinking, you could get a different colored dress, one that defines your eyes and curves. White is so—plain. You need a colorful dress that will define you.” she said simply. I thought about it. Sure it sounded nice to have a dress that made me look hot, but the shopping for it would be torture. She would make me wear every dress in the shop that's a three, then we would have to get shoes. Shoe shopping would take a whole other day to find a pair. I looked back up into Alice's face. She was giving me the puppy dog face. She knew I couldn't resist the puppy dog face. I tilted my head back and groaned.

“Fine! Do what you must! But promise you won't make me shop for shoes separately. It will be a one day thing, okay?” i bargained. Alice squealed, clapped her hands a few times, than hugged me.

“Thank you! This is going to be so much fun!” she thrilled. I tried to looked equally excited, but the door opened and Edward and Jasper came in.

“Edward!” I cried, running over to him. I wrapped my arms around his waist and snuggled into his chest.

“Hello Bella.” he laughed, stroking my hair, breathing in deeply. “How are you?” he asked. I looked up into his liquid gold eyes. My heart fluttered and I almost forgot to answer.

“f-fine, fine, I'm fine.” I answered quickly. He chuckled deep in his throat. He lent down and brushed his lips softly against mine, before tracing them from my temple to jaw, and back up again. My breathing quickened, and my heart rate went up. He pulled away, laughter dancing in his eyes as he listened to my heart. He placed his hand over my heart and locked his gaze onto mine. Suddenly he looked away at someone behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see who disrupted us. Jasper was giving Edward a look.

“Sorry.” Edward said to him. I looked back at Edward confused. He seemed to be listening to Jasper's thoughts. I suddenly remembered why I was here why he was doing this, and I tried to get his attention without being obvious. I stared into his eyes, trying with all my might to make him realize. After a moment, he nodded at Jasper, than brought his gaze back to mine. He looked surprised to see me looking so intently at him. He chuckled. “Yes, Bella?” he asked taking in my expression. I just realized I had my brow furrowed and my eyes were squinting a bit. I flushed, and relaxed my face. Edward placed his hand on the side of my face and caressed my flushed cheek. “What is it love?” he asked gently. I took a deep breath, remembering what I was going to ask him.

“What's my surprise, you know I don't like surprised?” I said, trying to be stern.

“If I told you, It wouldn't be a surprise.” he told me, trying to keep the laughter out of his velvety voice. “But yes, I do have a surprise for you, and if i want to show you, we'll have to get moving, or else I won't have you back in time.” he lent down again and brushed his lips against mine, before fully shaping them over them completely. I moved my lips against his, bringing my hand up to his head. But before I could reach his neck, he pulled back, and before I could react to that, he picked me up in his arms, cradling me to his chest. Instantly, the trees were zooming by. This time I closed my eyes, burying my face into his chest, inhaling his amazingly beautiful scent.

I didn't know where we were going, but soon enough we stopped. I felt him touch my hair, before placing me on the ground. I looked around and gasped. We were outside, in our meadow. Fireflies were hovering over the grass above our heads. The stream on the other side was bubbling peacefully as it glided over the rocks. I looked into the sky, and the moon was bright, almost full, but still missing a sliver. The stars were almost easy to see, but the moon made it too bright to look at them without having to actually look.

“Oh Edward.” I gasped, as I saw a small picnic blanket laid out, and a picnic basket on it. “Is this what you were doing? Instead of hunting?” i asked, still not looking at him, but at the beautiful sight around us.

“Well, no and yes. I set this up, and Jasper helped. Then we went hunting.” he told me. I brought my gaze back to his face, taking in his face in the moonlight. Every time I look at his face, my reaction is always awe. I can not get over how beautiful he is, and the fact that his is mine. I stood up in my tippy toes to kiss him fully on the lips. He returned the favor, moving his stone cold lips against mine. Not stopping until I had to pull away to breath. I hadn't noticed my heart rate shot up, and my breath was coming in ragged gasps. Edward smiled at me, placing his hands on either side of my face, looking into my eyes. “Shall we?” he asked eventually, taking one hand away from my face to gesture towards the picnic, leaving a tingling feeling where his hand had just been.

I nodded, and he led me over, his arm firmly around my waist. The blanket was thick, so the soft green grass was even more comfortable to sit on. He opened the basket and pulled out two wine glasses, then a bottle of wine. I stared wide eyed at him. Was he really going to let me drink wine? He noticed the surprised expression on my face.

“To toast,” he said, “The us.” I still was a bit shocked, so he added. “Unless you don't want to. I just thought it would another fun thing for you to do before you—changed.” he faltered at the last bit, then smiled. “Don't worry. I'm not giving you more than enough to toast, so you won't get drunk or anything.” I let out a relieved breath. I thought he meant that getting drunk was another fun thing for me to do, which was not like Edward.

“Oh, okay.” I said. He smiled, before pulling out the cork and pouring a small amount of wine into both glasses. “Your having some too?” i asked in surprise. He smiled.

“Sure, you can't toast with one person.” he smirked. I took the glass he handed me. The wine was blood red, and it smelled bitter. I looked over at Edward who was looking at his the same way i was. Disgusted. He looked back up at me after a moment, raised his glass and said. “To us.” I raised my glass, and tipped it against his and repeated what he said.

“To us.” we both swallowed the wine in one gulp. It burned the back of my throat. At first it was sweet, while it was in my mouth, but as I swallowed it, the sweetness turned into a burning bitter. Edward jaw was tense, and I couldn't help but laugh. We were both acting the same. “Well there's one human thing we both can live without.” i said. He relaxed his jaw and let out a small chuckle.

“Defiantly. I just hope they don't make us toast at our wedding.” he told me, grimacing as he no-doubt pictured having to do it again. He nose crinkled upward, pulling at the corners of his mouth, his eyes reflecting disgust. I threw my head back and laughed, before pulling myself into his lap. He wrapped his arms around my waist. I leaned back against his chest. The fireflies hovered around us, disappearing, while some appeared.

“I'm going to miss this place.” I finally said after what seemed an endless silence. Edward rested his chin on the top of my head.

“Yeah?” he asked. I knew he knew what I was talking about. “I though you hated Forks? It's too green, remember?” he teased. Forks used to seem too green to me, back when I first moved here. I was used to living where the sun dried everything up, making the grass brown, and the sand a dry dusty brown. Forks used to be depressing to me, but that was until I met Edward. Now, I love Forks. My memories of me and Edward are here, and when I turn into a vampire, and my memory goes, I won't have the same placed that we went to to help keep it. “Bella?” Edward asked, “Are you okay?” I nodded.

“Yeah. It just, everything that's—us, is here.” I confessed, feeling stupid. “This is where we began, and it's going to be hard to leave and forget it.” Edward turned me on his lap so I was facing him. He pulled my legs around his waist so that he could embrace me, close to his body.

“I know. It's hard to be—one of us. You have to move every few years, we can't stay in one place for long. I'd stay if there was a way that people wouldn't notice us staying young while they got old and wrinkly.” i gave a small snort at this. “You see. Every rose has a thorn.” I laid against him, thinking about what he said. Every rose has a thorn? Like the fact that Edward is unbelievably gorgeous, but he's a vampire?

“Why?” i asked out loud.

“Hm?” Edward asked as if I pulled him out of thought too. I blushed.

“Nothing. I'm just thinking.” i tilted my head up and pressed my lips against his. He moved his marble lips over mine, rhythmically, not breaking the calm atmosphere around us.

Suddenly, he laid back, pulling me along with him so I was laying on top of him. Then, he rolled so he was on top of me. He held himself carefully, so I felt none of his weight on me. He brushed his free hand against the side of my face.

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” he asked. I nodded. It was all i wanted. He looked a bit disappointed.

“Edward. I want to be with you, I don't ever want to leave. I couldn't stand to grow old and not be with you-”

“But you wouldn't have to leave me!” he protested. He didn't get it. He thought that i thought that once i got to old, i would leave him.

“I don't mean it like that Edward. I mean, soon, i would look old enough to be your mom, than your grandmother, than your great-grandmother! I don't want it to happen like that! I like how I am now! I want to stay young, and be with you! I don't want to get old because then I would die, and you wouldn't have me anymore!” i was close to tears—no, i had tears, gently falling out of the corners of my eyes, trickling down my temples and into my hair above my ears. He brushed them away with his lips before answering.

“I would follow you.” he said. I let out a small frustrated yell. He looked surprised and pulled his head back.

“I don't want you to follow!” i seethed. Why couldn't he understand I just wanted to spend the rest of eternity with him? “I want to stay with you for ever and ever and ever, I want to see your face every day for the rest of eternity! I can't let you leave me again! I can't leave you!” I choked it out, feeling like a child. Edward placed his hand on the side of my face and brushed my hair back.

“Shh, Bella.” he coaxed. “I'm sorry for getting you all worked up, I wasn't saying—Oh Bella,” he sighed as I drew in a ragged breath. The very thought of losing him again brought back the pain I felt when he first left me. “I'm sorry, I'm so very sorry.” he repeated. He put his arms under me, rolling so that he was now laying next to me. He pulled me over so my head was resting on his chest. I placed my arm over his stomach, holding on tight. “I won't leave you. I will change you. I swear.” he assured. My breathing came easier and I flushed as I realized how idiotic I was being. He let me calm down, waiting patiently as I slowly pulled myself together.

“I'm sorry.” I whispered. “I'm being stupid.” Edward placed his lips on my hair.

“Never.” he said softly. We lay there looking up at the sky for what seemed the longest time. His hard chest rose up and down as he breathed—or smelled. I turned my face so I could bury it into his shirt. He smelled so good. I never wanted to move. I would stay there forever.

Well? How was it? Good enough to keep going? Let me know how you feel. I won't post until I have at least five reviews! Thanks!

Much Love
