Ray and Neela were both watching Abby run around as she was getting ready for her shift. Joe was in his high chair, crying and the only time he would stop was when Ray would pick him up. Both Ray and Neela had a day off and Abby was waiting for the nanny so she could go to work. All of a sudden the phone rang and Abby rushed over to answer the phone. When she hung up, she groaned in agitation before she turned to Ray and Neela.
"The nanny is sick and I don't have anybody to watch Joe."
"We'll watch him, Abby." Ray said.
"Are you sure?"
"It is no problem, Abby. Go on and go to work, we'll take care of him."
Joe continued to cry as Abby went out the front door. Neela tried to feed him a bite of his baby food and all of a sudden felt it hit her in the face. She could see Ray fighting not laugh as he sat at the table beside her.
"I swear if you laugh, Ray Barnett, the chances of you getting any tonight are slim to none."
Ray wisely held the laughter in as he picked Joe up and carried him upstairs to change his clothes. Neela went over to the sink and cleaned the baby food off of her face and neck. She smiled as she heard Ray through the monitor talking to Joe, making the baby laugh as he changed him.
'He is going to be an amazing father one day.'
A few hours later, Ray had went out to get something at the store for them so Neela was alone with Joe, who was crying hysterically. She was lying on the couch, bouncing him on her stomach. It was everything she could do not to grimace when the baby hit one of her scars. The front door opened and Ray walked into the apartment. The look on his face when he saw what she was doing, was not a pretty sight to see.
"What the hell are you doing, Neela? Do you want to have to go back to the hospital?" Ray said, as he sat the bags down and walked over to pick up the screaming baby.
"I was trying to calm him down. It wasn't working."
"Do you need a pain pill?"
"I'll get it," Neela said, getting up off of the couch. "You take care of Joe and put up what you bought from the store."
Neela walked into the room that they were staying in while Ray, still holding Joe, put up the bags of groceries. She then walked back out of the room after taking a pain pill and the sight in front of her made her heart melt.
Ray was singing softly to Joe, slowly rocking the baby to sleep. When he was finally asleep, he laid him in his play pen and walked over to the couch where Neela had since sat down.
"Do you know you scared the hell out of me when I saw you bouncing him on your stomach like that?"
"Ray..."
"You are still not completely healed, Neela. You have to be more careful or you are going to end up back in the hospital."
"How about we take a nap while he is taking one?"
"Okay."
The two of them got up off of the couch, went into their room, laid down on the bed beside each other and fell asleep.
A few hours later, Ray was holding Joe and making faces at him as the baby laughed. Neela was getting ready to go and find something to feed all three of them when she heard a knock on the front door. She walked over and a strange look came over her face when she saw Dr. Dubenko standing there. She opened the door and looked at him, wondering what he wanted.
"How are you doing, Lucien?"
"I'm good. How are you feeling?"
"I'm getting better. What are you doing here?"
"Abby was telling you were still experiencing some stiffness in your joints so I thought I would come over and teach you some yoga techniques."
"Of course. Come on in, I was getting ready to make some dinner for the three of us, you are welcome to join us."
"Uh..."
"How about I put Joe in his play pen and cook somethingn for dinner while the two of you do Yoga in the living room?" Ray suggested, placing Joe, who was finally content, in his play pen and walking over to the kitchen to cook dinner.
An hour later, Ray had just about had dinner ready when he overheard a little bit of the conversation going on in the living room. What he heard pissed him off. He walked into the living area and looked over at where Dubenko and Neela were sitting on the floor. Neela saw the look on his face and knew that he had heard what they were talking about.
"Ray, nothing happened. He was just apologizing for how he had treated me while Mae Lee was here. He confessed that he mistook his feelings for me and that they aren't romantic."
" I think I am going to leave and let the two of you talk about this."
Dubenko got up and left the apartment as quick as he could get away with. Ray and Neela stood facing each other in the living room, not say a word to each other but you could feel the tension between them. Neela looked over at the playpen and saw that it was empty.
"Ray, where's Joe?"
"I thought he was in the playpen."
"He's not there, Ray."
The two of them turned around and started to look for the baby when Neela saw him in the kitchen, up on his feet and walking.
"He's walking."
"Abby is going to..." Ray started
"totally pissed." Neela said, finishing his sentence.
The two of them looked at each other and smiled, the tension between them forgotten as the watched Joe take his first steps.
