A/N: I probably shouldn’t be writing another DN story…But I’m bored and I have nothing to do in webdesign so I just type in that class

I’ve had that Irony story’s chapter sitting in my writing folder half written for months…I should hurry up and finish that too. Stupid school is taking away my time for these things.

Any way, another Matt and Mello story. Like I said, those stories really interest me. A lot of the stories that I read deal with Mello’s accident so I wanted to try one. No, I am not into yaoi so this story is not romance. I just like drama and stuff…

The crackling of wood and debris could be heard from anyone within eyesight of the building. Chunks of metal and wood were all around the ground not to mention bodies, Matt assumed, as he looked semi-calmly through the shades of his goggles. That’s precisely why he was even here in the first place.

He had gotten a quick phone call from the small apartment he and Mello were sharing while they were monitoring the second Kira, Amane Misa. He put down his handheld gaming device and reached over for the phone that was specifically used for the Kira case only.

Not even a second after he picked up his ear was bombarded with various noises: Boots on metal, fire hissing, muttered curses, ragged breathing.

“Matt—damn it! I…I need you to do something for me quick…I-I had to do something very…it’s just…just bring a car or something quickly!”

Mello had hung up abruptly after that leaving Matt in silence just staring at the wall. It took a few seconds before he even realized what had happened. Mello had done something stupid.

He got up from the couch with shaky legs still hearing the pain Mello had tried to hold back when he spoke, and took the keys off the table and left the building. He must have done something stupid!

So there he stood, hovering over the blonde who was breathing hard and not even noticing the fact that he was there. Mello was on his knees, one gloved hand placed on the side of his head as if he had a migraine and the other hung limply at his side. His left half of his face was bloody and looked as if he put a blow torch to it and went to town.

It was actually a pretty disgusting sight and made his stomach squirm uncomfortably. His hair was charred on the ends and his arm had been scorched all the way down to his wrist. His skin looked so…so….horribly indescribable that Matt had to look away for a moment before indicating to Mello that he had come to get him from his, appearing to be, suicide attempt.

“Mello.” His voice sounded unfamiliar to him. It was soft and flat and didn’t do much for Mello. He didn’t even move.

“I brought the bike,” Matt said a little louder and bent down to see his friend’s face more clearly. His face contorted into alarm and shock.” W-what the hell did you do to yourself?”

It smelled like burnt meat. Mello ignored him and kept his focus on the spot just in front of the tip of Matt’s boot. He had blood dribbling from the side of his mouth as he smirked slightly.

“They didn’t…get the notebook….” he chuckled slightly at this making Matt grip his right shoulder.

“That’s it?” he asked, slightly angry. He waited to see if Mello would say something else like ‘It was that or be shot to death’ or ‘There was something wrong with the wiring and it went off on its own unexpectedly’ but nothing came which made him angrier.

“You just set these off so someone wouldn’t get the notebook?!”

Mello just stared blankly at Matt taking in as much air as he could before he spoke softly.

“Yeah…”

He slumped forward suddenly and it took all of Matt’s effort not to grab his burnt shoulder to stop him from hitting the ground. His head drooped like a rag doll and his body went rigid shocking Matt. With quivering hands he touched Mello’s pulse on the right side of his neck to check his heartbeat. It was fluttering uneven like the ocean’s currents unlike Matt’s which was like a hummingbird’s wings.

It was a little faster than the average heartbeat since his body was under so much stress and it was short and brief.

Taking a calming breath, Matt as gently as he could, lifted Mello up over his shoulder and carried him back to the bike. He had no idea how he was going to keep Mello on since he was unconscious and couldn’t take orders.

Why couldn’t he have just taken the car?

DEATHNOTEDEATHNOTE

Mello woke from his unmerciful slumber. His head ached, his muscles cramped, his skin burned and he didn’t want to open his eyes fearing something might be uncomfortable about them if he did.

He heard slight rustling around him and tried to ignore the pounding of his heart in his ears. It sounded like jeans swishing around the carpet. He heard a few thumps and something being dropped. Someone cursed and the jeans swished against the carpet again.

Out of nowhere a surge of pain and nausea hit him full force making his head spin and forcing his eyes to shoot open and let out an involuntary groan. At this, Matt looked up from where he was on the floor picking up games that fell out of his arms over at his friend who gripped his head with his right hand again.

He jumped up and ceased moving his games into a cabinet so there would be more room and went to stop Mello from getting up. Mello pushed himself halfway up before his arm gave out and he fell back down, growling.

“Don’t move. You’ll make it worse!” Matt protested and tried to push Mello’s shoulder down to keep him on the couch. Mello squinted as his eyes burned from dryness and glared at Matt.

“Make what worse?!”

“Stop and look why don’t you?!” Matt said impatiently. It was just like him to not take in something as vital as his health. He swore this Kira case was going to be the death of them both.

Mello glanced down and stiffened seeing he was poorly, but still none the less, bandaged. His left eye was covered with gauze and his face and neck had wrappings around them to keep unnecessary debris floating in the air from getting any where near his burns. Mello’s left arm was wrapped as well.

“I didn’t do anything major because I didn’t want to mess with anything that could hurt you more at the moment. I’m no doctor but I think those burns need to be taken care of by a professional. And soon. I just bandaged you as best I could and—hey!”

Mello pushed himself up off the couch enough before he toppled over onto the ground landing on his stomach and coiling up.

“Ah! Son of a—“

“—Mello! Stop moving,” Matt said his voice slightly in a panic. He could get seriously hurt if he kept crawling on the floor.

Mello just groaned when he couldn’t get to his feet so he began crawling towards the hallway, his body shaking unsteadily. With all his strength he had to get to the bathroom before he threw up. He did not want to throw up on something he most likely would have to be sitting on for a while. It wasn’t doing him any good to have Matt trying to pull him back to the couch.

Mello tried to push him away but ended up feeling hot all over until he vomited in the hallway. He collapsed panting, his head a few inches from the vomit. Matt heard him mumble ‘bathroom’ and soon realized Mello just wanted to throw up anywhere but the main room.

Gulping, he lifted him carefully to his feet and placed him back on the couch. Mello’s skin burned under his fingers making him let out a frustrated breath.

“I’m going to get some cold water and a wash cloth okay? Just wait here. If you move around too much then—“

“Yeah, yeah…I heard you the first time,” Mello said weakly and waved his hand as if to dismiss him. Even though he was injured, he refused to act like an abused animal all quite and helpless.

Matt gave him a last skeptical look before heading out of the room leaving Mello alone to the ringing in his ears.

“Jeez…” Mello said on a small breath. The Kira case was starting to take its toll on him like he thought it would. Then again, it would all be worth it if he beat Near. Mello grinned to himself. He could just picture the look on his face and hearing the words “I acknowledge you being better than I” come from his lips. Okay, so maybe it wouldn’t be those exact words, but it would have to be something along those lines.

I’ll just stay here tonight…I’ll have to take off tomorrow. There’s still things I have to do,” Mello thought before he heard Matt approaching again.

He dipped the cloth in the cold water in a simple plastic bowl and wrung it out. He was about to place it on Mello’s forehead when Mello’s hand grabbed his wrist. Matt looked at him a little shocked.

“I’m not helpless, Matt,” Mello said in response to the shock that was written in his eyes. Matt nodded and was about to pass the cloth to him before he smacked his hand away. It was Mello’s turn to be shocked.

“I’ll do the simple things, you just get better.”

Mello glared and was about to make a snappy response when he felt the icy cold cloth on his skin making it burn. Immediately he withdrew his head and let out a thick breath.

“What the hell is wrong with you? I thought you of all people would know that ice on burns doesn’t feel the best in the world.”

“I’m not hot anyway,” Mello argued weakly. That quick movement sent another shot of pain to his stomach. It would feel worse if he threw up with nothing in his stomach. Matt saw the look on his face and put the wash cloth back in the bowl.

“Fine.”

He got up and walked down the hallway. Mello paused for a moment before glancing over his shoulder to see the darkness down the hall. He could hear Matt rustling around but had no idea what he was doing.

“…Yeah, you better back off,” he mumbled before hearing something that sounded like beads hitting each other. Looking over his shoulder again he saw a bottle of pills roll down and land at the foot of the couch.

Staring at it he looked up and saw Matt was still down the hall.

“Take them!”

Mello reached down and took the pills into his hand and stared at them. He knew it was better to take pills with something sitting in your stomach but he had no intention of eating at the moment. On the other hand the pain was burning away at him and painkillers sounded good about now. So he took them.

The next thing he knew, he was falling asleep on the couch, Matt hovering over him and placing the washcloth back on his head.

Cheeky bastard….
