The wind ruffled through Ash’s spiky hair as he sat on the grassy knoll with his pokemon gathered around him. Pikachu was snoozing on a rock, while Totodile and Bulbasaur played tag. Heracross was sucking sap from a tree, while Swellow, Staraptor and Noctowl hooted quietly to each other, conversing.
It was nice to see all his pokemon getting along.
It was great to be able to relax. Training and battling on the road was fun, and he didn’t regret the years of life he’d devoted to it, but he’d been Professor Oak’s assistant for about two years, and the job fit him well.
The old man was getting ready to retire. Karen, Gary’s older sister, would probably take over as researcher once he did, if she didn’t prefer to continue on as one of Johto’s Elite Four. If not, the position would go to Gary.
Still, he wasn’t worried.
“Oh.” He got up, brushing grass off his jeans. Who could it be?
Ever since he’d dropped out of official competitions, people had stopped bothering him. It was quite a relief – he was sick of getting marriage proposals and hate mail from people he barely knew.
Maybe it was a letter from his pen pal. Lance sent him letters maybe once or twice a month, but sometimes, they were censored.
Ash hadn’t seen the Dragon Master in nearly a year. Lance had headed to the Fiore region, doing some government work that was top secret.
The Pallet trainer kind of wished he knew what was really happening, but it was all right. As long as Lance didn’t get hurt or die…
He shook his head, and went to get the mail.
Ah, to be young again…
It seemed their friendship was irreparable.
Ash had given up a long time ago. He had lots of new friends – Misty, Brock, May, Max, and Dawn, just to name a few.
Maybe one of them had sent him a note.
He blinked at the sight of the official-looking cream envelope with a gold seal. What on earth?
After tearing the envelope open, he saw a letter.

William Goodman, President of the National Pokemon League.
He did miss competition...
Of course he would enter!
He hastily scribbled a reply, and sent it off in the envelope provided. There was only a month to prepare!
He and his pokemon would need to get into shape fast!
“We’re going to be battling again.” The trainer announced.
Pokemon all over the ranch perked up at the announcement. You mean like the Battle Frontier?
“Well, a little.”
Count me in! Muk burbled.
Ash grinned. His pokemon wouldn’t mind. He ran a hand through his short hair with a smile.
Which one of his friends should he invite as a guest?
Oh well.
He called Misty next, but she was competing – for the honor of the Cerulean City Gym, she declared proudly. Brock was doing the same.
Awww…
When he asked May, she announced that she was going as Drew’s guest. Well, that was not unexpected.
They’d been flirting with each other for years, and besides, they’d traveled through Johto together. He grinned.
“When’s the wedding?”
May blushed, and Drew rolled his eyes, before he hung up.
He didn’t want to take his mom though. That would be embarrassing!
Well… maybe he could take Lance.
When Ash called the Dragon Master, he got the answering machine.
“Um, Lance? See, I got an invitation to the Ultimate Pokemon Tournament, and I was wondering if you wanted to come with me as my guest.” He paused. “Call me back soon, okay?”
He hung up, his cheeks aflame, and didn’t know why. They were just friends, right?
Right…

Well, there’s no romance yet, but soon…

I rated it OOC because honestly, seeing Brock as gay is really hard to do. He’s straight but can’t get a date/so deep in the closet that it would take a crowbar to pry him out… and frankly, I don’t see Ash as the type to turn Brock gay, though he did dress up as a maid. Frown The idea of Brock being able to beat Pokemon Masters is also kind of screwy for me. I mean he runs the first gym in Kanto. The easiest…
