Chapter Two: The Worst Day of His Life

Farid lay on a boulder, thinking about his beloved Meggie. She was gone. Forever, since there was no way in or out of the book for the two of them. He had clung to a thread of hope for months, but that hope was slowly fading, and a loud voice inside his head echoed with a pang something running through his mind for weeks.

It's been five months, boy. You're never going to see her again. Move on.

Tears threatened to fall from his dark eyes, and as he sat up he felt a sharp pain in his chest. He grabbed at it, slightly confused. Why would his chest hurt? Did someone stab him while he was asleep earlier? But then he realised that it wasn't his chest, it was his heart.

His heart hurt with physical pain for Meggie; with her soft blonde hair that his fingers loved to run through, her blue eyes that could see right through him, and her pouty lips that were heaven to kiss.

Farid raised his other hand, which was shaking violently, and pressed his fingers gently to his mouth for two reasons.

To keep himself quiet so he would not wake Silvertongue or his wife.

And to remind himself what it felt like to have something pressed against his lips.

It was nothing compared to Meggie's sweet lips crashing into his, as her arms snaked around his neck. One of his hands resting on her back, the other tangled in her hair, neither of them breathing, but neither of them needing breath, because this, this was their heaven, their lifeline -

Speaking of which, he was finding it very difficult to breathe at the moment, and found himself drawing shaky breaths, as he tried not to sob uncontrollably.

She's not coming back.

And for the first time in five months, Farid, who missed Meggie so much his poor heart hurt, who had died for her and would gladly do it again - he believed it.
