GABE'S POV
I was playing my guitar to the beats I herd in my head for nine months. I wasn't sure at first how to write it about but then it suddenly came to me. I don't write my music, it writes itself. I'll be playing my guitar and suddenly I play an unknown verse and then another and soon I have a whole song written.
(By Incubus - "Drive")
Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can't help but ask myself how much I let the fear
Take the wheel and steer
It's driven me before
And it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal
But lately I'm beginning to find that I
Should be the one behind the wheel
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
I'll be there
So if I decide to waiver my chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine and hold my own and drive?
It's driven me before
And it seems to be the way that everyone else gets around
But lately I'm beginning to find that
When I drive myself my light is found
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
With open arms and open eyes yeah
Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there
I'll be there
Would you choose the water over wine
Hold the wheel and drive
"I like it." Stephie says as she and Dally walk through the door.
"Me too." Dal said as Stephie sits on my bed beside me.
"That's the beat you herd while you were asleep, huh?" Stephie asked. "I remember it."
"Yup." I say. "Finally wrote it down. What have y'all been doin'?"
"Oh nothing." Stephie said innocently. Too innocently.
"What'd you do?" I asked her with a brow raised.
"Nothing!" She said defensively. Yep, something was up.
"Dally?" I said looking over at him.
He too had the same look on his face. "What?"
"Oh my gosh!" I say irritated. "One of you best tell me what the hell your not telling me!" I hated secrets more than anything.
"We're not hiding anything from you!" Stephie said as she crossed her arms stubbornly.
I looked at Stephie's face. She's not been able to keep a secret a day of her life. Even when Mom was pregnant with her and wanted to hide it from Dad she had to give it away. When Dad would hold Mom in his arms, this is before the marriage went to hell, Stephie kicked and gave away the life changing secret to our over worked father.
Dally stood there with a blank look on his face and one eye brow raised. He was a little more tricky to figure out then our little sister. The only reason I knew he was up to something was because he didn't give me that look that say, what-the-hell-do-we-have-to-hide?
"You are too!" I said as I glared at them. "Tell me!"
"Chill kid, we ain't hiddin' nothing." Dally said as he sat down at the foot of my bed.
"What ever!" I said. "You both suck at lyin'."
"No Gabe, I think you're getting us confused with you." Dally said with a smirk. "You couldn't lie to save your life...well at least not to me."
I glared at him. "Could too!"
He raised a brow. "Sure."
I growled in frusteration. He knew just what to say to make me aggravated. "I could!"
"Prove it." He said calmly. Too calmly.
"How am I supposed to do that?" I asked him.
"Lie to me right now." He said with a smirk.
"That's dumb, you're gonna know I'm lying." I told him. What the hell is he up to?
"Excuses, excuses, excuses." Dally said.
I glared harder at him. "What the hell are y'all keeping from me that's so big you're trying to distract me from guessing?"
"Fine, you want to know the secret?" Stephie asked irritated.
"Duh!" I said.
"The secret is..." She trailed off.
"The secret is?" I was really getting annoyed now.
"I'm..." She trailed off again.
"You're?" What the hell is it?
"I'm on my period! There, I said it!" She fell down laughing then and Dal and I gave her a discusted look.
DALLAS'S POV
I was really curious if Stephie was gonna be dumb enough to tell Gabe the real secret. My attemps to distract him failed so I was hoping Stephie would be able to. When she said she was on her cycle, I gave her a discusted look. Like I really want to know when my little sister is going through her period. That's just plum nasty to me.
"You can keep that little secret to yourself." Gabe said. "But what's the secret between you and Dally."
"There is no secret besides that." Stephie said.
"Do you really think I'm dumb?" He asked and when Stephie and me looked gave him a look he gave a mocking hurt look. "I'm hurt. My own siblings think I'm about as smart as a rock."
"Not a rock." Stephie said. "Rocks are way smarter. Maybe dirt."
We all laughed. Gabe's probably the smartest in history of our family; our family isn't too bright. We always used to pick on him and call him stupid or dumb even though he was far from it. The only way I can honestly call him dumb is if I talk about his common sence.
"So where did y'all go?" Gabe asked, thankfully getting away from the secret. This was going to be a surprise and I sure didn't want anyone messing it up.
"Get some food." Stephie said as she turned the TV on Mickey Mouse.
"Oh yeah." I say as I grabbed Stephie's purse off the floor and pulled out the greasy paper bag, swinging it in the air like a pendulum.
Gabe's eyes lit up as he stared at it. "Is that what I think it is?"
"If ya think it's a cheeseburger and fries then yes." I say with a grin as I sit in a chair beside his bed. "I thought you might like to watch me eat it."
Gabe gave me a shocked look. "You're joking right? You can't be that heartless."
"Ya wanna bet?" I asked as I ate a french fry and made humm noise after. "I wonder how good this burger is gonna taste? Why don't I find out?"
I reached to grab it out of the bag but Gabe reached over and took the bag away from me. "You are not about to eat this right infront of me!"
"Then you eat it." I say with a grin as I ruffled his hair. "You've been driving me crazy with all the complaining about the food here."
"Thanks." He says as he starts munching into the greasy food.
"Hey Gabe, did you know that Dallas lied to us?" Stephie said as Mickey Mouse went off and Gabe finished his food.
He looked at me with brow raised. "What's she talking about?"
I looked at her. "What are you accusing me of lyin' about now?"
"You know how Dally use to watch Mickey with us before school?" She asked. "He hated it all along. He's never liked Mickey Mouse!"
I rolled my eyes as Gabe looked at me shocked. "Tell me she's lyin'?" He said calmly.
"I don't see what the big deal is." I say as I rolled my eyes when his eyes got even bigger at that. What is with people now a days and Mickey Mouse?
"Alright." He said calmly and turned the channel to another station where an horror movie was playing.
"You mean you're not upset?" Stephie yelled. "Our own brother doesn't like the coolest mouse ever!"
"I am too upset." He said calmly. "And I don't have a brother."
"Oh my gosh." I say as I rolled my eyes at him. "You are disowning me because I don't like a dumb mouse?"
"Do you hear something Stephie?" He asked our sister and I could tell he was trying not to grin. "Must be the wind or maybe a dirty rat in the wall."
"That's it!" I yelled as I jumped on the bed beside him, pulling him close to my lap and tickling him. He thrashed around and tried to free himself but I had too tight of a grip on him.
"Stephie!" He yelled for help but I gave her a threatening glare that promised the same treatment if she dared come to his aid.
"Dirty little rodent huh?" I say as I continued to tickle him.
"I'm s-s-sorry." He said between breaths. "L-let me g-go!"
"Do you hear something Stephie?" I asked her with a smirk.
"D-Dallas!" He cried out as tears started to fall from his eyes.
"I think I herd it again." I say as I looked down at my kid brother. After another minute of torture, my restless fingers stop but my grip on him doesn't loosen.
He rested his head against my chest as he gasped for air. "This has become a very annoying habit of yours."
I laughed. "Well it certianly makes you listen."
He just glared up at me and muttered a what ever. Stephie came over and I pulled her down so she layed in the middle of us.
"Now what?" Stephie asked after a few minutes of silence.
"What do you mean, 'now what'?" I asked her.
"Exactly what it sounds like. What do we do now? We can't lay in bed all day." She said as Gabe turned down the movie he was watching.
"Yeah, Dally. Let's get out of here!" Gabe said, excitement filling up his eyes.
"You arn't going anywhere for two more days." I told him strickly.
Gabe sighed. "Gee, why do you have to fallow the rules? You used to never be such a party pooper."
I rolled my eyes at him. "Quite whinning."
He glared at me. "I'm not whinning. I'm complaining."
"Same thing." Stephie butted in.
"Is not! Whinning is when you beg and beg and beg and maybe throw in a few tears. Complaining is when you don't like to do something but are forced to." Gabe defended.
"They're are basically the same thing." I told him.
"What ever Dallas, what ever." He said stubbornly.
I reached over and smacked him over the back of the head. "Shut it kid."
"Guess who's back!" Grandma Lee's grand daughter came running in and onto Gabe's lap.
"Lisa!!" Gabe's eyes filled with joy. "I thought you and Grandma had just abandoned me here!"
She hugged his neck and laughed. "No silly, we just been busy with chores and stuff. I drew you another picture!"
She reached into her back pocket and unfolded a nicely folded piece of paper and held it up for him.
Gabe took it and looked at it with a grin. "This has to be the best picture you've ever given me!"
"You like it?" She asked with a grin.
"Shoot kid, I love it. One day, little Lisa, you are gonna have your own museum full of your beautiful art work!" Gabe told her.
"Can I see it Lisa?" Stephie asked.
"Sure Stephie." She said as she handed it to her. I peaked over her shoulders to stare at the drawing. It was two stick people standing on what looked like a little kid version of the beach.
"Who are they?" Stephie asked her.
"That's me." She said pointing to the stick person with long black hair. "And that's my prince charming." She said pointing to the stick guy with spikey hair.
"Oh." Stephie said with a smile. "What's his name gonna be?"
"Whatever God wants it to be." Gabe told Stephie who in return rolled her eyes.
"Y'all two behave." Grandma Lee scolded as she entered the room.
"Hey Grandma." We greeted.
"Hey kids. Told ya I'd be back." She said as she sat in the arm chair by the bed. "Why are y'all all three in that bed? It ain't gonna hold all of ya!"
"We sleep like this and it hasn't broken yet." I told her.
She rolled her eyes. "Don't test fate, boy."
I looked at her confused. "What the hell is that suppose to mean? My fate is to fall on the floor or something?"
She rolled her eyes. "Forget it Dallas and don't swear around Lisa."
"What you been up to Mrs.Lee?" Stephie asked.
"Too much." She said tiredly.
"You look like you could use a nap." Gabe told her.
She turned to glare at him. "Thank ya kid, you look like you could use some good looks."
We laughed and Gabe gave her a faked hurt look. Grandma Lee always had been a joker and it was good to hear her joking around again. I guessed I missed that more than I thought.
STEPHIE'S POV
It was past midnight and I couldn't get back to sleep. I was trapped between Gabe and Dally since it was my night to sleep in the middle. I knew I shouldn't have watched the horror movie today. I don't always but sometimes I have nightmares after watching them and this happened to be one of those times. Luckly all I do is wake up in a cold sweat. I'd hate to wake Dal and Gabe up. My nightmares are all the same and unfortunately, I remember every detail about it so when I try to go back to sleep, all I can picture is it. I like those bad dreams you can't remember what they're about the best; at least then you don't know what the horrible thing that scared you so much looked like or sounded like.
I snuggle closer to Dally as I hear the killer from the movie's voice again. Dal's arms tighten around me and I find myself colliding with his chest.
"What's up kid?" He asked tiredly.
I try to sound half asleep, like I hadn't been up for hours. "Nuttin'."
He looked down at me and I prayed that he wasn't seeing through it. "You sure?"
"Yeah." I say as I rubbed my eyes tiredly. I was beyond tired but there was no way I'd be falling asleep any time soon.
Dally looked at me for a minute before resting his chin on my head and drifting back to sleep. After about five minutes, I herd him snoring and let out a sigh of relief. The last thing I need is Dal worring over me because of a bad dream. Only little kids had nightmares and I'm suppose to be a rotton hood for crying out loud. Besides I said it earlier, I hate showing weak feeling infront of Dally and being scared is a major one.
Even though I was really warm in Dally's arms, I shivered. It must have been from the creepy look on the killer's face that was in the movie. I wouldn't be this upset if the guy didn't seem so real. This is probably why everyone hate when I watch a horror flick. I remember every detail and create my own movie out of them, staring me as the victim.
Dally's grip on me tightened once more and I hope he didn't wake up again. I don't know how I'd fool him once more.
"What's wrong?" He asked me and I silently cursed.
I faked like I was asleep and didn't hear him.
"Stephie, I know you're awake." He said tiredly.
Maybe he'll go back to sleep if I don't answer.
"Stephie." Dally tried again.
I remained silent.
"Stephanie." Dammit, he ain't gonna waste time if he's using my full name.
I remained silent though and kept my eyes shut even when he pulled me away from him and turned me on my back so he could look at me. I knew better than to open my eyes though. I'd bet my last dollar that he was giving me one of his looks that he gives me when he wants information. I hated that look the most because I always give in to it.
"Steph." He says again in an irritated voice. I can't help but feel kind of bad that I'm keeping him awake but he could just leave me alone and go back to sleep. I knew though that wasn't going to happen.
I opened my eyes after a few minutes and was met with his peicing eyes digging into mine to see what's wrong. I tried to keep them blank but it was like me having to stay still for so long, impossible.
"What're you scared of?" He asked calmly.
"Nothing." I told him stubbornly.
He gave me a look which I ignored. I decided to roll over so my back was to him, unknowingly setting myself up. As soon as I turned, Dal wrapped his arms around me and pulled me all the way to his chest and held me so tightly it was hard to breathe.
I looked up at him as I tried to get out of it even though I know it was useless. "Let me go!"
He didn't though. He tightened his grip on me and I thought for sure if he did it again I'd run out of air. "Stephie, tell me."
I kept my mouth shut and I didn't try to move away again. I shut my eyes and maybe, just maybe I'd actually fall asleep again without the dream.
I gasped out when I saw the killer though and regreted it immediately. I was pushed farther into Dal's chest and he was looking down at me worriedly.
"What's wrong?" He asked again and I couldn't stand the look he was giving me any longer.
"I just had a bad dream." I told him and I couldn't help but feel embarrassed at how weak my voice sounded. Fourteen year olds do not have nightmares and shouldn't sound like a little kid about it if they do.
"What was it about?" Dally asked and his grip turned from insanely tight to comfortable and I couldn't help but relax.
"That movie we watched earlier." I told him tiredly.
I felt Dallas run his fingers through my hair and I knew I wouldn't be awake much longer if he kept that up. "I knew I should have switched the channel."
"Like I would have let you." I told him. "I only have nightmares about movies when I don't see the ending and since Grandma and Lisa had came over, I missed it."
DALLY'S POV
"Just relax and close your eyes." I told her as I stroked her hair. "Ain't nothin' gonna get you."
"Kay." She said and she was soon asleep.
I sighed as I watched her. There was not dout in my mind that I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep now.
"Dally." A soft voice spoke and I looked over to see Gabe wide awake.
"What's wrong?" I asked him.
"I had a nightmare." What is with these kids and having nightmares?
"Come'er then." I told him as I moved Stephie and me over as he got out of bed. Guess I'm sleeping in the middle tonight. Once Stephie was situated so that she was still cuddled up to my right, I motioned for Gabe to come lay by my left.
"What was it about?" I asked him, silently praying he wouldn't be as stubborn as Stephie was.
"You're gonna laugh if I tell you." He said as he baried his face in my shoulder.
"No I won't." I told him.
"Promise?" He asked and I nodded. "OK, you know how you get a toy in the cerial box? Well I dreamed that I got a stuffed Bug's Bunny when I opened the Froot Loaps and Bug's could talk and move around. Well we had an argument because he kept dissin' Mickey Mouse and he tried to kill me. He turned like the couch and everything in our old house against me and they kept trying to kill me."
I gave him a look. "What the hell?"
"I know!" Gabe said. "Like the knives were flying at me and the couch kept trying to jump on me and saying it would get me back for all the times I jumped on it. It was scary man."
I couldn't help it, I started laughing so hard I was almost crying.
"You promised you wouldn't laugh!" Gabe told me with a glare but I could tell he was trying not to laugh himself. "You know, it sounded a whole lot more scarier when it was in my head and not said out loud."
I shook my head as I laughed, trying to be quiet so I didn't wake Stephie up. "What the hell did you eat to make you dream something like that?"
Gabe just shook his head and snuggled closer to me. "I don't know."
"Probably that cheeseburger." I told him. "Maybe I shouldn't sneak ya anymore."
He gave me a look and I laughed. "Shut-up Dal, you're not funny."
