Chapter 1.
My uncle leaned in over the table, a serious look on his face. I knew it was over.
“Do you have any queens?”
I grumbled and threw the last two cards I held onto the table. The faces of the queens looked up at us solemnly. Then my uncle started laughing. I shook my head and joined him after a sullen moment. It was amazing how seriously we took our card games.
“So Knight, guess we were wrong about that little theory. Your powers don’t help much with card games.”
I chuckled and leaned back in my chair, “Well, I can only tell if someone is lying when they actually speak. You just nod yes or no instead,” I paused, “Not exactly fair.”
“What?” he exclaimed in mock outrage.
I shrugged, “Well, I’m just using my talents. It isn’t quite fair if I don’t get to put them to use.”
He just shook his head with another smile and shuffled the cards. I examined his down-turned face, noting that the worry lines had decreased some since he had arrived. Of course, since my father had been imprisoned things had been much better, but there were still things he had to worry about. Every superhero had things on their minds. Harold Stevens was no exception. Of course he also had the task of raising two children in separate locations. His free time was split between my cousin Lydia and me. Sometimes I felt guilty that she didn’t even know that I existed. I wondered what excuse my uncle had used this time. He’d probably told her he was out on business.
“I have to go soon,” he finally looked up, his blue eyes meeting my dark, almond-shaped pair.
I shrugged, trying not to think too much about the solitude that always descended after his visits were over, “I understand.”
He cleared his throat and shuffled the cards once more. The familiar sound of the bridge felt like home to me.
“One more game? Blackjack?”
“Sure,” I smiled and hoped the game would last a long time. I even ignored some of the slips he made. The statements that rang false in my ears…I think he realized halfway through but he didn’t say anything.
After it was all over he reached in his bag and retrieved a hastily wrapped package. I knew it was a comic book…probably Batman.
“Happy Birthday Knight,” I tried not to notice the way his eyes had misted.
“Thanks,” I answered and tore open the paper. It was a collector’s issue of one of my favorite Batman comics. “This is awesome,” I smiled and stood up from the uncomfortable plastic chair.
He looked at his feet and then stepped around the table to embrace me tightly. In a few moments he had gone and I was left in the small living room that connected to my room. It was a decent apartment in a suburb of Maxville. I lived on the opposite side of town from my uncle and cousin. Sometimes it was hard to be alone so much but I had gotten used to it. Besides, there was always a move every couple years to spice things up. The agency wanted to make sure that I was protected. Even with my father ignorant to my existence and finally in jail, they worried about something happening.
I sighed and cleaned up the mess. I still had homework to finish for the next day. I was a senior this year and attended a nearby high school. It wasn’t very hard to conceal my powers. I always had to resist a smart comment or two when my teachers lied to the class or one of my few acquaintances lied to my face. I call them acquaintances because I never had any friends. Friends were dangerous.
But that was all before, before I started all over, in another dimension, at a place called Sky High.
This is for RyanBrooklyn who has wanted this story for months and months. Well Ryan, this is all I have written up, but maybe in putting it up I'll get more done.
For all my new readers this story will make infinately more sense if you read my time series first. It's a good series (or so I'm told) so check it out. I'll try my best to explain everything, but I can't guarantee that you'll understand perfectly without reading those as well. They start with the story "Time and Again".
For my time series fans. This is Knight's story and will cover his time living in the alternate dimension. It won't have as much of an adventure plot per say but will be more about character development and giving you an idea of what happened in that alternate dimension.
