These Arms of Light
By Archangel
He squinted slightly against the light, blinking his eyes open and looking around in faint confusion. What had just happened? It was only a blur of pain, brief fear, and he didn't understand it in the slightest. Chris glanced around himself, seeing nothing but bare white for a moment. Then out of it he saw a familiar figure.
"Nancy?" he asked, seeing her hurrying towards him.
"Chris?" she looked around as well. "Where are we?"
"I..." Words failed him, then he was interrupted.
"Daddy! Mommy!"
The befuddled parents turned, scooping up their youngest son and holding him close. It was a slow realization, coming over them gently as a simple understanding. A knowing. As if someone was whispering it to them tenderly, hoping to ease their shock. The family looked at each other. None of them seemed quite sure what to say.
"I.." Chris started again. "I tried to... I.."
"Never mind," Nancy shook her head, smiling lovingly at him. "It doesn't matter anymore. Don't worry about it now."
He furrowed his brow, a pained expression coming to his face as he embraced her again, Daniel between them to share their love. The family huddled together for a long moment in the peaceful silence before there came the sound of a man clearing his throat. They looked in the direction of the voice. Chris's eyes lit up, unable to restrain the joy at the sight before him. He looked at Nancy again, seeing her matching smile. She looked up at him and gathered Daniel into her arms.
"Go on. He's been waiting long enough."
Chris grinned at that. He turned and started towards the figure, staring in awe at the familiar man that had changed so much.
"Eddie..."
"Chris," he smiled warmly.
"You.. Wow..." he breathed, reaching to touch the soft wings on his friend's back.
"Good to see you too, holmes," he chuckled.
Chris blinked a second, then the grin came right back and he laughed, clasping Eddie in a tight hug that was equally returned. Eddie's laughter rang joyfully.
