I Can...

There are a lot of things I can be for him

I can be his pillow during a good movie.

I can be the wine list at a fancy restraunt.

I can be his best friend.

I can be the best thing that ever happened to him.

There are a lot of things I can do for him.

I can make his favorite meal.

I can surprise him with Giants' tickets.

But there are things that I can't do or be for him.

I can't be the brother he longs to be alive.

I can't be the partner he lost.

I can't be the one to bring back the little boy who lived across the hall.

I can't be the one to tell him that it will be all right.

I can't even tell him it gets better, when I know it never will.

What I can be at this very moment in time is so simple and shows the true nature of love.

I can be here.

I can be his safe place to fall.

I can be his ear.

I can be his broken heart.

I can be his rock.

I can be the solid and lasting thing in his life.

I can hold him while he tries not to cry.

I can just be me, being with him, whole heartedly.

For now that's all I can be.
