I stood out in the empty grave yard standing over my parents graves. There was a small wind and except for the leaves blowing around it was silent. I didn’t really mind, I needed to think and this was the only quiet place.
I got on my knees in front of their graves and prayed. I prayed for money to take care of Pony and Soda. I prayed for strength. I prayed for a job. There were some many things to pray for I don’t think I prayed for them all. Finally I looked up to the head stones, half of me expected to see Mom and Dad standing in front of me.
I sighed and stood back up. “Mom, Dad, what do I do?” I asked, not expecting any answer. “I’ve been bitter and I don’t think Ponyboy and Sodapop want to stay with me any more. I don’t mean to yell but…”
“But you can’t help it?” I spun around and saw Two-Bit walking over to me with two roses in his hand. I watched him place one on each of their graves. “I lifted these for you guy. I know you always told me not to steel, but what can I say? It’s in my blood.” He said with a small grin on his young face.
I stood there and kicked the dirt under my feet. “I didn’t want anyone to know about this.” I told him.
Two-Bit nodded and leaned on my mother’s head stone. “Don’t worry. I wont tell no one. Maybe I can help a little. I can drop out and get a job…”
“No…”
“I can help pay the bills so Sodapop and Pony can…”
“No…”
“Keep going to school. Then they can go to college and everything…”
“No!” I yelled, making him jump. “Keith, you’re not apart of this and I’m not pulling you into it.” I told him with a mean look.
“Darry you and I know I’m already in this. Why won’t you let me help you?” Two-Bit asked, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“Because, you can still go to college and make something of yourself. I can’t and if you drop out you’ll end up the same as me.” I explained, sitting on a bench only a few feet away.
Two-Bit followed and sat on top of the bench, resting his feet on the seat. “Even if I go to school I’m not going to make anything of myself.”
“Why do you say that?” I asked, looking at the sunset behind my parents’ grave.
“Because, I don’t want to make anything of myself.” He answered watching it as well.
I couldn’t argue with him because I knew he was right. Keith Mathews didn’t want to make anything of himself. He wanted to be a Greaser and stay a Greaser. He wanted to be like me. He wanted to have no chose. He’s afraid that if he has a chose he might become something and leave us all behind. Apart of me wished he was different and the other is happy to know he’ll always be here.
“What do you say, Dar? Can I help ya out or not?” He asked again, now looking at me.
“Let’s go with the not.” I told him, standing up and rubbing him on the top of the head. I whipped the grease of my hand. “For heaven’s sake Two-Bit, lay off the grease.” I told him as I walked over to the gate.
“You wanna say that again, Curtis?” He asked running after me.
I chuckled and jumped over the gate and out of his reach. He jumped the gate and pulled me into a head lock. I pushed him off and ran all the way back home with him tagging along, like a hyper dog.
“Hey Dar!” He called from behind me.
“Yeah?” I asked, not turning around or slowing down.
“I didn’t know your eyes could get so blue!”
